First off, given that the PS3 to PS2 sales ratio is 1:3, a drop of 200% and the X360 to Xbox sales ratio is 2:1, an 100% increase, regardless who is up a few million units on who when this generation ends, Sony dramatically underwhelmed expectations and Microsoft dramatically surpasses expecations.

With those truths noted, lets now talk about how the X360 will retain its 2.5M+ unit lead. The answer is the pending sales drop:

Bringing the X360 4GB down to $149, the X360 250GB to $249 and the X360 250GB Elite Bundle to $299 will do more for Xbox than dropping a PS3 to $249 or a shaved version to $199. $199 is a nice price for someone serious about buying a console but anything below that starts drawing in fence buyers and spur of the moment buyers (realistically the only people who havent jumped into this gen yet)

The PS3 slim did more for the PS3 than the 360 slim did for the 360 .... a price cut would benefit the PS3 more.

Your PS2 to PS3 comparrison is very flawed and here's why,

The PS2 took over 10 years to reach the 150 million you refer to. It launched at $299 and most of those sales were after it dropped to $199.

The PS3 took 4.5 years to reach 50 million and it finally came down to $299.

Comparing 10 years to 4.5 years is nonsense. The PS3 has been selling well at $299 and continues to close the gap on 360 which is already at $199. At some point the PS3 will drop to $199 and you know sales will soar when it does.

It's been pretty much shown that most of the sales of any console occur at the $199 price and below. 360 is already there, yet every week the $299 PS3 outsells it.

When PS3 drops to $199 it is GAME OVER8)

When PS3 drops to 199 it will be too late and Microsoft will have their next machine out. Nintendo would have won the next gen by then whilst Sony will still be milking the PS3.

That's not happening any time soon.

Especially when Sony has just started making a profit off of each PS3 sold back in Spring or Summer last year. I doubt that they will risk going back into the red again by dropping the price of the PS3 to $200 at the wrong time. Plus there's the PS Vita to think about, as they'll probably take losses off of each Vita being sold.

Sony can milk the PS3 as much as they want. Last gen consoles can still pose a threat to next gen consoles. The PS3 is actually the console that poses the largest threat to next gen consoles because it has Blu-Ray as well as free online and it'll be cheaper and have more games than the next gen consoles. The PS2 still sold well even after the next gen consoles launched because it had advantages over the next gen consoles. The PS3 could easily hit 80M even when the next gen consoles are on the market.

And what if Nintendo & Microsoft's next gen consoles have Blu-Ray installed on their next gen consoles? Then Sony won't have that advantage anymore. Plus they'll most likely charge to play online for next gen.

It doesn't matter if MS and Nintendo have new consoles, there are a lot of people that can't afford next-gen machines or still don't have a TV to take advantage of them. PS3 will be for the budget market, PS4 will be for gamers. Just like PS3 and PS2 now. Also Sony's biggest advantage is their internal development and great games. They are a lot like Nintendo that way. I don't think Sony will charge for online, nobody else does except MS. We should be wishing for MS to stop charging?

We won't know for sure until the PS3 is completely discontinued. If it manages to sell more units than the 360 by then, we could certainly say that it's done better in the end. And the Wii's sales continue to slow down, so who knows whether or not the 360 and PS3 will one day close in on the Wii's number of units sold, especially if the Wii is discontinued sooner than its competitors or if people are too distracted by the next Nintendo console to ever buy a Wii. I actually see this as being a close tie between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.

I'm starting to get tired of OMG Sony didn't sell as many PS3s as PS2s and MS sold way more 360s than Xboxs. Not hard for MS considering it would be a real shame if they couldn't outsell the original Xbox. Also the PS2 has sold 150 million. I can't say I'm too surprised that the PS3 won't sell as much as the PS2. But we get it. The PS3 didn't sell as much as the PS2 and the 360 has done better than the Xbox. We get it. Also wasn't this said when the 360 slim came out? I guess it didn't come true if its having to be said again.

I found an interesting article from last year's March, where an analyst said that the PS3 will one day surpass the Wii's sales. Hmmm...give it another 4-5 years, and it should happen, especially with the Wii's sales dramatically declining. Maybe Nintendo will end up second or last place by the end of the ten-year console generation.

One other article says that the PS3 will win this console war in terms of sales, once its ten-year cycle is up.

It won't even matter, because no one will care about that, & by then, consumers will be paying more attention to Project Cafe & the next Xbox system than towards the PS3 once they're out. Nintendo have already succeeded.

Ummm...no. In spite of the next consoles being released during the time of the current ones, the winner is the one who at the very end sells the most units. Otherwise, there's really no point in debating console wars. Besides, each new console gen should be treated as something unrelated to the current one, so it's wrong logic to say that Nintendo will automatically succeed again, just because the Wii is selling the most units right now.

If we're not going to include total sales over the course of a console's lifetime, then what's the point of caring how either console sells in the first place? Realistically-speaking, unless the Kinect gets some killer apps and the 360 sees an increase in exclusives over the last remaining years of its time, the PS3 will win in the end.

Multiplatform-wise, I can see a more even distribution of games on each console than during this gen, but I still don't see how Microsoft can catch up to Sony with its exclusives. And a significant amount of exclusives will likely be multiplayer and/or co-op enabled by then, so this will play greatly to Sony's advantage, even if Sony's online service is still not as great as Microsoft's.

Because they just turned profitable last Spring or Summer, & needs to make a profit as much as possible? They can't afford to make a huge price drop to $200 as of yet.

There was an ¥150.1 billion positive change in the NPS segment due to improvement in the cost of sale ratio and Sony are forecasting a greater total shipment this year than the last fiscal year. Whether there will be a price cut isn't in question. It's just a matter of how much is cut.

Good observation;)

Those who think Nintendo can claim an automatic victory with Cafe should look back at how, by that logic, N64 should have had an automatic victory.

Nintendo(and maybe MS) using Bluray in their next consoles only catches them up to the current gen PS3. And as the specs go, Cafe will have better graphics than PS3, but it certainly won't be night and day. Cafe launching next year gives both MS and especially Sony a big advantage as they will both have the chance to release consoles quite a bit more powerful. This reminds me of Dreamcast coming out early giving the other 3 the chance to overpower it.

Just think, when Cafe launches, PS3 will most likely be $199 as costs drop alot in a year's time. If Cafe launches at $399 as many have guessed, it will cost twice as much, have Bluray(no advantage), have somewhat better graphics, and a small games library. On the other hand, PS3 will be cheap, have Bluray as well, and have a huge library of AAA games(many that are exclusive).

As far as I can see, PS3 will probably have at least another 3 years to thrive.

why do lemmings keep pointing out last gen and the ps2? if the winner from the previous gen always won the next gen then atari would still be in first place now. nobody is saying that the 360 didn't perform much better then the original xbox but at the end of the day ps3 closing the gap coming out a year later and being more expensive is an achivement no matter how you spin it. the real story of this gen was nintendo going from the sure loser to the far and away winner. In a real way both sony and ms got owned by nintendo.

The PS3 to PS2 sale ration is not even 1:2, can people stop comparing the 150 million PS2 sold in 11 YEARS to the PS3 50 millions sold in 4 and half years, the PS2 when it was 4 and half years old had 77 million units sold, not 150.

Because they just turned profitable last Spring or Summer, & needs to make a profit as much as possible? They can't afford to make a huge price drop to $200 as of yet.garland51
Sony is great reducing cost much better than MS would ever be because they know hardware they are a hardware company, unlike MS every time the PS3 got a drop in price the model was redesign, not only they reduce cos by mass producing they do so by shrinking components and unifying components. But even so a small loss is nothing compare with the profits they will bring with games, like i told you before you are not looking at the big picture,MS isn't getting profits now because they are making tons on the 360 hardware, they are making some profits now because they are doing it with software, the more people own the PS3 the more games will less and the more sony wins.

why do lemmings keep pointing out last gen and the ps2? if the winner from the previous gen always won the next gen then atari would still be in first place now. nobody is saying that the 360 didn't perform much better then the original xbox but at the end of the day ps3 closing the gap coming out a year later and being more expensive is an achivement no matter how you spin it. the real story of this gen was nintendo going from the sure loser to the far and away winner. In a real way both sony and ms got owned by nintendo.

What's amazing is the fact that the PS3 was a pretty expensive console at the time of its launch, yet, unlike the 3DO, it hasn't been a complete failure.

If the PS1 & the PS2 weren't hugely successful, it would've been a complete failure.

I hope the price cut does happen. I'd like to replace my elite with a slim because I hear they actually are much silenter (especially with games installed). Might get one for my birthday at the end of August (and give my elite to my brother I suppose).
