"Speaking at the show, Bryan Lewis, research vice president and chief analyst at Gartner, revealed that Microsoft, bucking industry norms in what was hoped to be a cost-saving decision, chose not to seek the input of a traditional ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) vendor in designing the architecture of the 360's GPU. Relying purely upon in-house processor-architecture design expertise (or lack thereof), Microsoft went directly to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to put the Xbox 360's GPU chips into production.

The result was the mass production of ungainly processors that ran quite inefficiently, generating far more waste heat than expected. According to Lewis, had Microsoft brought an ASIC vendor into the design process, a far more elegant chip architecture would likely have been developed, leading to much cooler-running GPUs for the Xbox 360. Bryan Lewis noted that Microsoft has since developed a new version of the Xbox 360 GPU with the support of an established ASIC vendor, widely thought to be ATI / AMD."

In short the RROD happened becauseMicrosoftgot cheap with there GPU and the result was it ran hotter than usual. Which caused the GPU to warp. Meaning RROD happened because X360 got to hot

*Facepalm!*

Damn Microsoft, you're trying to beat two titans of the industry in Sony and Nintendo. The least you can do is not skimp on the design of your console!

I know a guy that fixes 360s as a hobby. He says it's really easy, and after he fixes them, they run cooler than before. He tried to explain it to me one time, but he's an electrical engineer, and I am not. He buys them dead on Ebay for $50 and fixes them and resells them for $150-$200 depending on what accessories he got with it.

And yet they decide to cut costs by not consulting a hardware expert...

So will there be a class action law suit where the settlement will stipulate that anyone with the older model of 360 will be able to trade for a new one because Microsoft knowingly made a faulty product?

It took them 3 years to release that info to the public? Sad really . I'm ashamed to have given them my money for 360.

I wouldn't say they knowingly designed a faulty product. they just didn't follow typical protocols.

I totally lost my x-box (out of warranty) and only had to send in my 360 once, back when forza2 came out. I was pissed, sitting there looking at my new game not be'n able to play it. but it seems to work fine now, just loud as all hell.

My real worry is what will happen after the 3 years is up.

I don't care what's causing it. I just want it to stop. No more RROD, no more bad DVD drives (this happens more often than one might think), and no more general hardware failures.

 a loophole? Its happens with any electronic. If the PS3 packs up and breaks and the warranty has run out, guess what, you have to pay to get it fixed:o

PS3 is a console with no good games.

NiTiZ

a) We're talking about hardware reliability here. Thanks for injecting your offtopic fanboy comments. And the PS3 spanks the 360 in this department.

b) MGS4. Case dismissed.

disks scratch when the user is silly enough to move the console with the disk spinning inside. If they do that, they deserve to have their game ruined. Dying with updates? PS3 more likely to suffer from that, since you guys get 5 firmware updates a week because Sony cant get them right lol. No thanks, PS3 is a console with no good games.

FUNNY...I have 7 consoles that use cd's...The only one I have seen any problems with is my 360. Its a horrible piece of hardware junk...end of thread..

And you're word is enough to prove it all. I've owned EVERY American released console except for 6 now since the beginning of the industry and the only ones I have any trouble with were the Atari 5200 because of the controller and the Playstations. Want to try again?

Yeah I cant believe some people still defend the 360's reliability... I've been told 1,000 times "well it sounds like you need to take better care of your system then", even though I baby it.

It's ridiculous, I read an article online yesterday about ways to keep your 360 from overheating and what not. And it showed a pic of a 360 and a powerbrick set up on legos to help ventilate heat. It's a good idea, but how sad is it that people are spending $350+ bucks on this system just to prop it up on legos so it wont overheat???

I love the 360, and it's such an absolute shame it's so faulty. It feels like a bad dream really. Like, only MS can fix this, no one else, but it's like something you cant escape no matter how much you baby it. It's a shame though, because the console really is fun.

Most people realise it has a major problem with heat and RROD. But people only defend it when faboys name other random stuff like disk scratching and firmware bricking like they're common.

I'm sure there are all kinds of "do it yourself" videos on YouTube... that dont mean you can go from being a customer to a customer support repair specialist from a 4 minute youtube video.

I'm confused, last i checked ATI designs and made the gpu inside the 360.
as for that a choice like that doesn't explain the masses of people that have never had a problem with the 360 me included.

how could it be a design flaw? and not a manufacturing flaw?

P.S: ati i do believe designed the gpu in teh 360 from day one.

Hope you arent talking about me dude....I have more consoles and more games then any 20 people on here combined. I have been gaming longer than most everyone on here has been alive. Its a part of my life. That is why I hate to see a company like MS come in here and mess it up for everyone. They have scared lots of people off because of their trashy hardware.

I will say the 360 is fun and I use it lots. I have had LIVE since it came out...Different gamer tag though...I just dont understand people NOT understanding the problems and realizing its NOT the users fault. MS has admitted to the problems and they have said they are working on it..FUNNY...How long does it take?
