it depends how long they remain on the market, i presume the new consoles will hit at the same time. i thik it will be between the ps3 and 360, right now i'd say ps3 will get last place. we'll see what happens with the slim though after 6-8 months on the market. it'll have to sell damn good to catch up though.
i would say it ends when the next set of consoles release, at least that is the only time sales will be discussed here on sw. no one is going to make a thread when next gen consoles come out saying "yes, ps3 has took over 360" no one will care as it will be ps4 vs xbox vs nintendo's next console. If you guys say this generation starts with the first console released in it (360) then it will end when the last console of them is discontinued (Probably PS3 since Sony got 10 years plan) then the order will be like this:
1-Wii
2-PS3
3-360

You need to be fair and thats how thing goes you cant stop counting sales whenever you want PS2 still selling and the numbers are being added to its record and you dont know if people wont mention it later.
well... i really dont care because you cant play sales  looking at the standings now i would say sony would be last. but then again looking at ps2 still running strong in sales. id have to say 360 will be last.
I think the question is kinda flawed as I dont really think the Wii is comparable to the PS3 or 360. I think the PS3 will end up selling more than the 360, but neither will come close to the Wii.
But it's a moot point as it's like asking which of the following will sell the most over the next 5 years:
A) An RV (plodding fun for the whole family)
B) A Ferrari (speed and power, fun for the youngsters and hipsters)
C) An Aston Martin (power and speed, fun for the hipsters and youngsters)
Two of these things are not like the other.
the next generation starts once the first of the next generation consoles come out. once one generation starts another needs to endIf you guys say this generation starts with the first console released in it (360) then it will end when the last console of them is discontinued (Probably PS3 since Sony got 10 years plan) then the order will be like this:

the wii, because its dead when natal and ps wand comes out. and ps3 and 360 will last 4to 5 more years after its dead giving both system enuff time to pass it.
nintendo will release wii hd or wii 2 but no one gonna buy another wii system that just sits there never played.
I'd never thought I'd say it, but I have a feeling the PS3 will beat the Wii back to third with the Gamecube due to the fact that Sony is beating the snot out of the Wii since the PS3 Slim came out. Not to mention Sony won two gens.

wii hd wont count as wii sales. they are not allowed to get away with what they do in the handheld market. gamers need to fight back against the evil nintendo!!!1. Wii
2. PS3
3. 360
Why? It's because Sony is going to continue supporting the PS3 way longer than Microsoft will support the 360. I predict Microsoft will completely cut off the 360 like they did with the Xbox last gen when Microsoft releases a new console, which I'd give them 3-4 years at most before they announce a new console. I read a few people saying that this gen's sales won't matter once the next gen starts... but that's not fair at all. If the system continues to sell then why would we pretend like those sales don't exist? In all honesty it is possible that the PS3 will outsell the 360 once Microsoft releases their new console and cuts off the 360's support, although I believe it will happen long before this. Either way, in the long run it just means that PS3 still passed it in sales.
I just don't see sony supporting the PS3 longer than the 360. Maybe by a year, but that's it.
goblaa
What makes you think that? Sony has shown their support for their consoles long after the competition has stopped supporting theirs. The original Playstation was still in production untl 2006 IIRC, about 11 years after it launched. The PS2 is still in production and has games planned for next year, 10 years after launch. The Gamecube on the other hand lasted from 2001-2007, a 6 year lifespan, and Xbox production was ceased in 2006, which is only a 5 year life span. The PS3 may not have had a successful start compared to its predicessors, but the PS3 slim might be able to give it that boost in sales that it has needed and I doubt Sony will stop supporting this one that fast.

I mean that the PS3 'could' be around for 10 years...but the reason the PS1 and PS2 were was because they were so massively successful. The PS3 is not. The PS1 could survive during the PS2 era because people were still buying them. The PS2 is surviving now because people are still buying them. The PS3 is having a hard time selling now (though the new model is helping, I just don't see the momentum lasting past the holiday) and it will be even harder to sell next to a PS4.
And you better believe that sony will release a PS4 around the same time MS releases a new console. In fact, they'll prolly try to beat them to te punch as MS got a huge jump ahead releasing the 360 a year earlier than the PS3.

Well the PS3 has definately made a comeback and is heading in the right direction, so I expect sales to start rising significantly (no where near the PS1/PS2, but still good). As for the momentum of the sales, as long as Sony keeps its advertising strong it should continue to do well. Remember, most people who don't own a PS3 right now don't own one because of the original price. A price drop and a new model means more people getting the system and if they like it they will tell their friends about it and so on. Looking at the sales worldwide, the PS3 is beginning to sell more in other countries (U.K. and Japan are perfect examples) and they are starting to pick up more support from countries like Japan while 360 loses it (FF13 is a perfect example).
And I highly doubt Sony is going to release a system before MS because they are in no position to do that. Sony took a huge lose with the launch of the PS3 and I don't think they would abandon the system just as it started doing well. It would be in their best interest to continue supporting this system for as long as they can. Microsoft on the other hand knows they can kill off the 360 whenever they please and release a new console.
wii - 53 million 360 - 31 million ps3 - 23 million all just rounded from my memory those numbers are within a million or twoCould someone plz give me the sales numbers for each console? Then I will make my decision.

So you honestly believe that Nintendo is trying to appeal to soccer moms, fathers, grandparents, and casual gamers overall because they want to turn them into "hardcore gamers"? You don't think that they could be using that as an excuse to try to expand their markets to gain sales from individuals who normally wouldn't play video games instead of losing money by satisfying their loyal fans with good games... do you:o?

Wii has won obiously, Natal will ensure 360 stays in secondand PS3 will be last.

So you're putting all MShope on a feature rather than games, unlike PlayStation's 1st and 2nd party games?
Isn't a VIDEO GAME console about games?
Sorry. Sony has beat Microsoft in the game department. So if we use logic and reason, PS3 will end up as 2nd place, with all the 1st party tittles comming for it. Games is all that matters. Not video cameras.

lol is that why Sony tried to market the PS3 as a blu ray player when the PS3 didn't have any games? And there is a much higher percentage of casual gamers to hardcore gamers, and this thread is not abt the games its about the sales. Microsoft will sell bucket loads when Natal comes out. Your just being a blind fanboy. Also 31mil to 23mil? Do you seriously think Sony can catch up? Magic 8 ball says unlikely.

Oh wow that's... exactly what I said :| They are expanding their market to make more profit, not to create "hardcore gamers" as you originally stated. All Nintendo is doing is making casual games and releasing old games in order to appeal to people who normally don't game or who quit gaming (older generations that grew up with those NES/SNES games). I'm not sure what your definition of "hardcore gamers" are, but people who play Wii fit or the first Mario game for a little while every week aren't what I would consider hardcore. Maybe those were their intentions from the start, but they definately haven't followed through with them. If anything, they are trying to release more and more casual games and market them towards not only the casual gamers, but also to what little "hardcore gamers" they still have left.

wrong. it IS to create hardcore gamers. Nintendo knows that casual gamers and non-gamers, while bigger in number than hardcore gamers, buy less software. they are trying to introduce non-gamers to videogames with simpler games, then slowly move them up to more complex games.
nintendo's strategy:
non-gamers turn into casual gamers, and casual gamers turn into hardcore gamers
read this, it will make more sense to you
PS3 isn't coming back, Microsoft has some things up their sleeve. I own both, and a Wii, Wii isn't going anywhere. PS3 isn't coming back, and 360 is going to keep it's 2nd place throphy.
Wow, I'm tired of people talking this "Sony keeps PS3 out longer" crap. If Nintendo, and Micrsoft move to the next gen with numbers still higher than PS3 for this gen, the've abandoned this gen and the numbers for 360 and Wii stop, so even if Sony carries PS3 for 5 more years or so after Nintendo and Microsoft Decide they want to move on to Xbox 3, and Nintendo Wii2, or what ever they'll call it, it wouldn't count.
Saying that Sony will sell more because they will run PS3 longer is like saying, the last guy who shown up to the track after the race was over, and managed to make it to the finish life, is still as winner.
It doesn't matter, because if Nintendo and Microsoft shut doors of Wii and 360, and move on while Sony still runs PS3, PS3 has no compitition, and people who will not be able to buy WiiHD's or 720's will still buy a PS3. PS3 will not matter in 8th gen, since it's a 7th gen console.
So you theory that Sony will ended up topping or just getting in 2nd place is BS, since it wouldn't even matter.

First of all, scratch the fanboy claim 'cause Im not one. While my full support goes out to Sony the most, I give credit where is due, and accept truths some actual fanboys, just can't seem to understand nor accept.
And that is, that the PlayStation brand is far too strong and more famous than Xbox in the video game comunity. And with that alone, should give you the benefit f the doubt wetherXbox will out sell PlayStation or not. Xbox is terribly horrendous at 1st party tittles. They simply DON'T have that compared to Sony or Nintendo. Games is all that matters.
There are 150+ million PS2 console usersout there that know what PlayStation is.
And please, don't make it seem as if 24-25 million is soooooo far away compared to 31 million. This gen is going for the 10 year cycle, considering how high developing costs for next-gen consoles are gona be, and IF players even want a new console that is, and at a time where the economy is at its worst since the Great Depression.
Only 2 and a half years have passed from a 10 year mark. And the gap is 8 million!?. If it was the Wii with 50 million sales, which would be futile to surpass then yes, but damn, 8 million dude? seriously.
Sony has anihilated competition since 1996 to 2005.

Listen guy, your bringing in a whole lot of things which don't need to be in this thread. I certainly did not say that the Playstation brand was not as well known, that would be stupid and extremely fanboyish. Also its not 24-25 million its 23 million. 2 million makes a lot of difference buddy. so does 8 million. You act as if that is a small number, it is not at all. Your right, they did anihilate competition from those years, but why aren't they anihilating them now? And why are you bringing up the PS2 in a thread about this gen? We all know how successful and huge the PS2 was. It will always be my favourite console. And how can you mock the Xbox 360 for not being a "video game console"? The PS3 had about 10 games for a good while, and has been marketed as a Blu ray player because that was the only way people would buy them...For the record i admit the PS3 has a much better video game line-up, as well as the much better deal. I am a Xbox 360 fan, not a fanboy.
