Better quality online games (so far). Untill Sony release their online games to compete fully with great online franchises, i doubt people will stop paying for it.

We can get awesomeness for free from what I see with P2P play and everything else not needing a fee.

Seriously though what is the fee for? To buy purple donkeys?

I guess it's for the unified friends list stuff and whatever..is that what it is?

Does all that cost $60 a year? Not sayin it's insane money but just trying to justify it.

Yep. But in all fairness, the money we spnd clearly goes on buying marketplace exclusives. sure Demos are free on silver, but given the speed and how many come out on the 360 than the ps3 in the sameperiod, money HAS to be involved... somewhere.

Oh...but you can do all that on the silver account which is free. Demos dont' cost anything. Only online play does

Umm ok...XBL is amazing IMO. Too bad for you. I'm just asking about the fee not the online quality itself.

And all this kids and trash talk is WAYYYYYYYYYY overmade or overexagerated. I've playeds hundreds of COD3 games, COD2, Gears, Halo 2 RV6 and I would maybe 10% of the games max had jerks talking smack or being very rude and disrespectful.

And I haven't noticed many annoying kids whining and yelling or whatever THAT much. Sure it is there but people act like EVERY game is full of this. And that's 100% BS

In truth there is no reason to be paying for XBL it is a bit ridiculous since PS3 Wii and PC gaming are all free, why they put a price i don't know but this in the end hurts the 360 a bit more not by much but a bit becuase a lot of people are used to the free online market so why does 360 have it no clue but more peopel i discusss with if XBL were free you'd have a victor.

Well wii online sucks, the ps3 doesn't have the games and to get a decent ps3 server the host has to pay for it anyway...

Put it this way, MS has worked hard both generations, especially with Xbox1 and its awesome technology. Unlike Sony they designed the X360 with games only in mind. They've also lost a truckload of money. They need to make it back somewhere, to appease the investors. So yeah, I don't exactly approve of it, but hey, they need money to.

no reason at al really. MS are just getting as much moolah out of the customer as possible. the profits made from microtransactions should be used to fund the service.

whats a real kicker is that MS are offering the same stuff on the PC....for free. u only have to pay if u want to play with xbox players. with PC-PC online play....all live features are free as far as i know. granted the integration is not as seemless but i can live with that. free, reliable and gets the job done.

live gold players are getting fleeced. i know ill never ever pay for online play....the games are expensive enough as is and online play is free on every other platform bar the xbox.

Indeed PC gaming is best, online and offline, but yea. Windows is hella profitable. Xbox franchise is the opposite.

Well one possible benefit of having to pay for Live is game security. For example. If you have to pay you would have to be a fool to try something like hacking/cheating on a game or just using insane amounts of foul language over the headset. If you do this you will find yourself banned and out on the $50 you spent on your subscription. Over a free server theres no real penalty if you get banned. Just make a new Login name and start it up again. While sure Xbox Live is not fool proof, cheating and stuff still happens. Its still far less than I've experieced else where. So yeah theres one reason, lame as it may be.

There is only one reason I can think of apart from the obvious with friendlists etc, and that is if you lose all your profile on your 360, you can recover your profile from XBL where everything is stored.

I lost all my data once, something corrupted my hardrive. I entered my account details along with my password and after 20minutes downloading everything was back. I think my sub fee more than made up for the anguish I would have felt if I'd lost everything, even my save games were back.

urm, is it actually proven its P2P o.O

not to mention the massive bandwidth that is used during games through the hubs....

I mean right here ;

http://uk.xbox.ign.com/articles/372/372013p1.html

Quote:

250 xbox Live servers, 4 data centers, and 12 gigabytes/second of bandwidth in support of Xbox Live are all ready to go

most servers are 2tb in size, not to mention around 32 gb of ram amongst other bits....

and untill some proof surfaces its p2p then i have my doubts...

Some more reading

http://uk.xbox.ign.com/articles/360/360183p1.html

also

Yes this for the original Xbox live launch, but still  it hasn't changed ;)

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/366/366944p1.html

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just like in PC versions of Unreal, UC will be server based so that players from all over can join a game through Xbox Live. Better yet, you can host a game and have it password protected so you can facilitate clan games and practices. Through your Xbox you'll be able to set up your own "server" and leave it open for other players to join. Your console isn't actually hosting anything but through your Xbox you'll be clearing out space for your custom game on Xbox Live. You can customize the rules any way you want including weapons, winning conditions, player mutations, etc. The maximum number of players that can participate in one game is still to be determined. A combination of level size and complexity will determine how many players will be able enter a game.

I don't like to pay for live, either, but it is not pure profit. MS has to maintain everyones gamertags and achievements, track downloads, messages etc, as well as maintain servers that search users to see who is playing what at what time so that people can join games, etc. In the end, you really have to pay just because MS wants your money. :) farrell2k

scoreboards, leardboards matchmaking. Also servers up so the game is able to be played online. Remember, on the ps3, dev host the servers people log onto and they can take them away at any time. Xbox live, every game is playable online, except maybe yearly sport games.

I remember think... well games like Metal Gears old online will close down cause of no money to keep it up but with the fee the devs can do XBL BUT...........Wait a tick..lol

Aren't all XBL games P2P? All you need is DVD or maps on your HD and an internet connection and voila.

So what exactly is that fee going to then? Pure profit?

oh so you pay 50 bucks for fast downlaudable content. owwee i see, i guess when you paly laggy online games with peer to peer servers than thats a good thing huh?. maybe you should try your geow again, and see if the host has an advantage...........

psn is free, and it runs waaay better than live. when firmwire 2.0 hits, everything wityh the xbox guide button will be on the ps3, and then thats a rap.

I know its all P2P, but you're always connected to Xbox Live servers aswell, they make all the connections.

For example, when you play Halo 3 (today, or tomorrow) when you search for a match, you're connected to Xbox Live servers and they connect all the other players to the host afaik.

But i know what you mean, with the original Xbox Live it was very obvious what we were paying for because there was no silver users, now with 360 its a little blurry as to what Gold users are actually paying for.

Here is my thought on it and why I believe you pay $50. I think with the marketplace, XBLA and all the other features that are on XBL for free. Microsoft thought to themseleves how many people are actually going to pay $50 a year for all these things? So they said hey we have to get something for these serivces, so we will have to charge somewhere else so that we can get some kind of cash. They said hey more people are going to want the online experience with their consoles to play games with their friends. So they charged for P2P gaming. End of story, they knew they would get a lot more people to pay to play then to pay for all the other stuff.

I'm not a fanboy and I do love my 360 as many know but...I'm thinking to myself and..What are we paying for again?

I love XBL but...ok here:

The only thing Gold is for really as far as I know is to play Online games. Silver has the Demos and all that stuff.

That's what I don't get. I thought it was because they had dedicated servers, but I guess that's not it.

Ha! Fell into my trap.:P XBL negates the need to have different things that do the same thing by unifying and expanding only one great service.

I know it's weak, but I couldn't think of anything else :)

and if you've actually used any of those you would know XBL is the best.

Far from it.

Is it really that expensive that people need to complain? i remember the days of Seganet where you paid over $21 a month to play dreamcast online but no one complained. Xbox Live is an awesome service and you get voice chat and a unified friend list in every single game. That alone is worth the fee.

If I'm gonna pay for an online service I atleast expect lag free, dedicated servers. Which, of course, I do not have atm.

Xfire is adware and that kind of service wouldn't work with consoles. It's much easier to make adverisement money on computers.
