Xbox 360 Becomes First Video Game Console Ever to Invite the World to Create Original Games and Share Online With Millions

In a landmark announcement during the keynote address at the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC), Microsoft promised to soon allow Xbox LIVE members to play, rate and share community-created games. As the first in the industry to pioneer high-speed online gaming and high-definition games, Xbox 360 once again broke new ground by introducing a new, open distribution service for games created by the community and soon playable by its 10 million Xbox LIVE members. Community-created games on Xbox LIVE will quickly double the size of the Xbox 360 game library. By the end of 2008, Xbox 360 owners will have access to more than 1,000 games, making it the largest, most creatively diverse library across all next-generation platforms.

"The time has come for the games industry to open its doors to all game creators, enabling anyone to share their creations with the world," said John Schappert, corporate vice president of LIVE, Software and Services for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "Our goal is to drive a creative and social revolution in games with the same transformative power that we've seen in digital music and video sharing."

Inviting Everyone to Share Their Own Games With Millions
Demonstrating a look into the future potential of community-created games on Xbox 360, Chris Satchell, general manager and chief XNA architect at Microsoft, announced that seven games created using XNA Game Studio 2.0 would be available immediately for Xbox 360 owners to download from Xbox LIVE Marketplace:

· "JellyCar." Created by Walaber from the United States, this game is about driving a squishy car through squishy worlds, trying to reach the exit.

· "Little Gamers." This is a 2-D high definition action side-scroller based on the famous Web comic "Little Gamers" created by Loïc Dansart, a 24-year-old software developer from Belgium.

· "The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai." An intense 2-D action platform game created by James Silva from the United States, "The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai" has a unique, highly stylized look and fast and fluid action.

· "TriLinea." This puzzle game created by Edison S. Prata Jr., Renato Pelizzari da Silva and Davi da Silva Prata from Brazil mixes fast-paced action with strategy.

· "RocketBall." Created by Tyler Wanlass, Patrick Murty and Todd Barrons of the United States, this neighborhood game of dodgeball explodes onto the street with fast-paced multiplayer action.

· "ProximityHD." This game, created by Brian Cable from the United States, takes the essence of strategy games - battles for control of territory and armies - and distills it down to a simple, easy-to-understand set of rules for casual players.

· "Culture." Created by independent game development company Hidden Path Entertainment from the United States, "Culture" contains challenging games and puzzles based on beautiful flowers.

An Xbox 360 community game created using Microsoft's XNA Game Studio software and XNA Creators Club membership will be able to be submitted for distribution on Xbox LIVE. Each community-created game must then undergo a thorough peer-review process and be evaluated for accuracy in representation and appropriateness. Community game developers will be able to beta test the process this spring and will be able to distribute their games on Xbox LIVE by the end of this year.

You can download them now it's just slightly confusing. Go to the XNA page on XBOX LIVE and watch the video on how to do it. Once you download the game launcher you go to your game library then you select the XNA GAMES tab with the Y button and you can get the games. They are demos.

I loved The Dishwasher. I thought it was a very addicting little game. It probably sucked for you because you sucked at playing it.

you'd have a good argument there if the title of the article and thread didn't say "console".

It reminded me of Guardian Heroes for Saturn...stripped down of course but similar.

They leave out the part about actually having to have programming knowledge to use it.

There were PS2 tools availible..but you couldn't test/debug on the actual PS2 unless you bought a license from Sony.

Correct me if Im wrong.

If liking JellyCar makes me wrong, I don't want to be right!

XNA is a good thing, I'm not sure how it could be spun into a negative.

Heres a question. When you create a game and alot of people like it and buy it, who gets the money that it makes? You or MS?

The tech didn't exsist?

Sony Net Yaroze - Net Yaroze is a development kit for the PlayStation video game console that allowed users to write the computer code, compile it, and send the program to the PlayStation. Many games made by hobbyists on the Net Yaroze were released on various demo discs that came along with the Official PlayStation Magazine from the late 1990s up to 2004.

Linux for PlayStation 2 - The Linux kit's primary purpose is amateur software development.

With PS2 Linux, a user can program his/her own games that will work under PS2 Linux, but not on an unmodified PlayStation 2. Free open source code for games are available for download from PS2 Linux support sites. There is little difference between PS2 Linux and the Linux software used on the more expensive system ("Tool") used by professional licenced PlayStation game programmers. Some amateur-created games are submitted to a competition such as the Independent Games Festival's annual competition. It is possible for an amateur to sell games or software that he/she develops using PS2 Linux, with certain restrictions detailed in the End User License Agreement. The amateur cannot make and sell game CDs and DVDs, but can sell the game through an online download.

The only difference is the use of internet and online distribution.

Why are you trolling? Yes the 360 does have a high failure rate that I am sure everyone on these boards knows about! You're not contributing anything to this thread, you probably thought you would make everyone laugh but in reality you're just annoying other forum members trying to discuss something positive.

Gamespot is better off without people like you in my opinion.

On topic: My initial thought was to point out, as my fellow hermits have done that this has been done on the PC. However, having an extra platform and one that is more popular amongst the casuals, start introducing mods, indy games and basically something a bit different is a really good thing. It will encourage creativity from the community and hopefully produce the next portal, counter-strike or next great indygame to start its own sub-genre!

It may also open up the world of PC gaming modding for people which can only be a good thing.

So can you download any of the games your friends created for free? And do you think MS will come out with a Most Downloaded or the Highest Rated Download type of leaderboard for these user created games?
