Bad news for HD-DVD as Microsoft goes Blu

Article by Rachel Konrad 06/04/07 The Associated Press

There is Bad news on the horizon for X-Box 360's HD-DVD Drive owners as Peter Moore told Rachel Konrad on a recent trip to Japan while entering negotiations with Pioneer. Microsoft's Xbox corporate VP of worldwide marketing and publishing Peter Moore told Japanese site ITmedia that the imminent release of the Blu-ray Xbox 360 peripheral could appear for the system before Christmas. Moore admitted that Microsoft's opinion on HD-DVD as the Next Generation format winner is bleak with the worst-case scenario being a repeat of the Beta vs.VHS war of the '80s. Moore also added Microsoft is giving the consumers the most cutting edge technology out there and In this moment in time Blu-Ray is that.

As per usual Peter Moore couldn't help but have a go at Sony and the PS3 "However, he suggested that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since its uses an external drive. He also suggested that it's a weak point for PlayStation 3, saying Sony's system is stuck with only 1 format. Microsoft announced the Blu-Ray peripheral will connect to the Xbox 360 using one of the system's USB ports. Moore once again confirmed that the Blu Ray add-on for the Xbox 360 is only for watching movies, and there are currently no plans to use it for games, nor are there plans to release an Xbox 360 with an internal Blu Ray drive.

Stuck with 1 format? Wait, I'm pretty sure my PS3 plays DVDs? CDs? Yeah, thats right, it does.

I notice PS3s also have USB ports on the front of them. Not sure what he's trying to prove here.

It seems to me there is only one way to take that. PS3 is stuck with Bluray, while they had the foresight to use DVD... even though PS3 plays DVDs. If they can run an HDDVD attachment through USB, whats stopping PS3 from doing it too? A firmware upgrade? Seems to me the Box is stuck with DVD while the 3 has a couple of options open to it.

I love how he attacks Sony.  "one format"  haa ahhah yea the better one.  I wanna know which 360 owner is dumb enough to let MS milk this expansion as well?  Ah and for the xbox its only for movie watching.  How funny it is.

GM made some dumb decisions in the past but they are better then Toyota.  :)  Remember how Toyota bragged about quality?  Look up 2006 recall report.  Toyota is around 550,000 recalls, GM had around 10,000 recalls.  Quality is in GM's court.  By the way I'm a Ford guy.

What does he mean by stuck with 1 format? He couldn't be talking about the Blu-ray/HD-DVD war because if Blu-ray wins wouldn't it be Microsoft stuck with 1 format also? The second theory is too stupid for me to mention. We all know it plays DVD, CD, USB ports, Flash Disk, Smart Cards, etc.

Quick question, aren't the HD-DVD and BD addons useless for non-elite Xbox 360s due to the lack of an HDMI? I read somewhere that HD movie content will be encrypted and can only be used with HDMI. Correct me if my BS is wrong or what.

The XBOX 360 having a Blu-Ray player would be amazing! This would really give people no reason to buy a PS3, it's not like PS3 has any exclusives left anyways.

Just because they are putting out a blu ray add on doesn't mean HD-DVD is abandoned. They're just playing it safe and covering the bases. They probably put out HD-DVD first to hurt bluray a bit. Honestly, I don't see bluray or HD-DVD replacing DVD, we'll see.

Oh man... my head is literally starting to hurt.

I said that they COULD add an HDDVD attachment, if thats what Moore means by being limited. I also said that the PS3 can play every format the 360 can play, PLUS BLU-RAY. How is this limited? How did his comment go over my head? Better yet, why am I wasting my time? Public school just isn't what it used to be. :(

This thread is about a 360 bluray add on.

Wooooow....Thank for the info.

So you do realize Microsoft is NOT stuck with one format..?

But the question was how is Sony stuck with one format?

That just sucks for 360 owners cuase its just more money they have to put out. HE states it wont be used for games but i guarantee you they will and eventually MS will be putting out the new 360 super elite with built in blue ray.fuman3

People said the EXACT same thing about the HD-DVD add on....

Thank you! I've been sitting around for hours filling my head with this drivel, and I thought I'd actually gone insane. Glad to see someone else is on the same page.

If Blu-ray looses, Sony is stuck with it in the PS3, while microsoft will have both a Blu-ray and an HD-DVD player. Assuming this even turns out to be true.

D_Znuhtz

That guy comes across as such a jackass its incredible.

Stuck with 1 format? Wait, I'm pretty sure my PS3 plays DVDs? CDs? Yeah, thats right, it does.

I notice PS3s also have USB ports on the front of them. Not sure what he's trying to prove here.

Wiffff. That's the sound of his statement going WAY over your head.

....

That's the sound of nobody laughing at your mid-90s SNL humor.

"He also suggested that it's a weak point for PlayStation 3, saying Sony's system is stuck with only 1 format"

"...." isn't an onomatopoeia lol.

Why the hell would sony add an HD-DVD attachment?! You honestly think they would do something that stupid? They already went blu ray, turning back now would mean hell for the ps3.

rofl

Oh man... my head is literally starting to hurt.

The PS3 cannot do HD-DVD. By formats he was ONLY talking about bluray and HD-DVD (not all the other ridiculous crap you mentioned). TECHNICALLY the ps3 can do HD-DVD, but there's no way in hell it ever will. All their games are on blu ray discs, so they ARE limited to blu ray, 360 will have both bases covered.. Understand now?

Hell, Moore wishes sony would prove him wrong and relelase a HD-DVD ps3, that would be great for M$.

Because blu ray for the ps3 is built in!!! NOT an add on. Thus Sony has decided what they're going with, releasing HD-DVD for the ps3 would be death for the ps3. Think about it, this isn't about what they technically can and can't do..

okay, but blu-ray isn't the only format. They may be stuck with blu-ray, but its not the only format PS3 can run. On top of that he said it was a weakness. Doesn't make sense to me. If he said PS3 would be stuck with blu-ray, then it would make sense. However he siad they stuck with one format.

If cows are posting on system wars they probably gave money to MS. (aka Windows)

But anyway, **** blu-ray.

TheDarkDisciple

Actually I'm not running Windows, I'm running Ubuntu and its nice to know you have such fanboyism as to hate a format that is technically superior.

How exactly are they bad? It's there for those that really want it, but the people that don't aren't forced to spend the extra money on it.

TyrantDragon55

Look up Sega CD/32X...while you are at it look up Nintendo 64 and Memory Cards, or Nintendo 64DD.

A Bluray add on...don't make me laugh.  Didn't they just have a hdd dvd add on not too long ago.  And if thats not enough they just came up with the xbox360 elite.  Well its getting to the point that makes you think whats next and I think its going to be the Elite plus which is an xbox360 elite with a bluray addon and guess what its going for very low price of $700.

Well this was probably taken out of context and/or he just assumed people would understand that since he is talking about bluray/HD-DVD he only meant bluray/HD-DVD.. Plus it's not like we even know the exact quote of what he said, I can't find it on the link. (Unless he talks in 3rd person)

When people call it the format wars they're talking about the newest formats (HD-DVD blu ray), they aren't talking about CD/DVD/VHS/betamax anymore.. Same goes for system wars, we're now talking about the newest systems, (360/PS3/wii), no more ps1.

I'm appauled..
