Since I started saving for the 360,people were annoying me with the red rings of death thing.

-My local game seller hates the 360 because it's broke and always warn me about the choice I made to get one.He got a PS3 and a Wii atr his house but not the 360.

-His college who was a 360 owner told me the same thing and tells me to get a PS3 instead(he sold his 360 and got the PS3)

So,all of you who are 360 owners,am I garanted to get the red rings of death??I want the 360 but still if Sony didn't had a high priced console.I would have probably got one.

My premium was bricked out of the box. My Elite is still working fine and I love it. I also have the other two consoles and love them too so if you want a certain system go and get it, just be aware that it might get the red rings.

The Wii and the PS3 have no problems like the ones mentioned. Crap like that just shouldn't happen on such a big scale. One should just be able to go into a store and buy a product without having to worry about shoddy hardware. That is the case with the Wii and the PS3. Not with the 360.

This is probably the best advice. If you really want a 360, then wait until MS sorts out its hardware problems. They're supposed to put in the new falcon chips and that should fix it. However, wait a little while other people buy it to see if there are any problems that come up. Once it's clear that the problem is fixed, then you can jump right in. Also, another benefit is there might be another price drop by the time you purchase yours.

Right now, everyone will get them at one point or another due to hardware flaw, but it might take many years for some.

Good Question. at a 33% failure rate you have a pretty good chance of getting one. Don't get fooled by the 360 fanboys because they will tell you about the 3 year warranty and all, but the warranty only covers the RROD problem. Unfortunately, the xbox360 has more problems than just RROD. the DVD drive is so cheap and crappy, you just never know when it will quit on you. these are the problems that the 360 owners are reporting, but to be fair though, I know a couple of people that have not had any problems. The thing that you also have to look at is that if your 360 gets the RROD, M$ will sure fix it and you might have to wait around 3-4 weeks to get it back, but a lot of people also complained about that the System they got back isn't any better and usually crapped on them again. Some people even claim that they're on their 6th xbox.

Well for all X360 are able to get the 3 red lights. It's not that people are getting faulty manufactured xbox 360 but it is that people are getting Xboxes with a faulty design. But microsoft has recently started adding an extra heat sink which is suppse to make the RROD less rampant. But only time will tell. if you are planning on buying a X360 plan on having the deal with the RROD.
On a happier note MY XBOX 360 IS ARRIVING TODAY FROM THE REPAIR CENTER!!!!!!!!

Look, let's put it this way. Every console you buy has SOME chance of being faulty. The 360's chance is just marginally higher. But it's under warranty against RROD for 3 years, so you're good.

its a huge rate compared to other consoles this gen, and microsoft has admitted that mostly all consoles are defective.

but, whether that defect will ever lead to a complete failure, that is a question that seems to be based on too many factors to provide a legally and logically sound answer.

I don't understand lol? You only want to get a PS3 so friends stop telling you that the xbox will break? Have you actually thought about why you want a gaming system? Xbox 360 is currently reigning the king of all 3 consoles atm. Why on earth would you want anything else?

im not gonna lie i am on my 3rd 360 but i think its the service and games that keeps me from selling it because halo 3 (omg best game ever-haters dont even say you've played it and thought it was trash) and they give you a free month of xbl and they're pretty nice about doing extra stuff..

I guess that time is now then. The Falcon CPU 360s are out now, starting with the Halo-edition. The newer ones run cooler so should reduce all of the rrods (except for those that are user-error).

That being said, my launch-day system has had zero problems. I had launch PS2 and original XBOX and both had to be repaired. From my experience, the 360 is more reliable than either of those systems. (Don't own a PS3 (nor will I ever) so I can't compare it's reliability).

Ditto. Everyone I know with a 360 has had zero problems. I've talked to employees at my local gamestores and they've said there's been SOME returns, but nothing approaching anything like the numbers that the Cowboys here are reporting. While I understand that my conversation with gamestore employees doesn't represent an actual statistical model, nor is it representative of everyone else's experiences, I'd put the failure rate at 5% - 10% at most based on everything I've read and conversations I've had.

With the Falcon hardware now coming out (Halo-edition models and newer builds) the vast majority of rrods (the legit ones) should be drastically reduced.

Watch the Cows try to claim otherwise.

Lemmings argue games based on ratings, sales based on NPD, features based on reality.

Cows argue potential, hypotheticals and for more time....

The RROD has to do with the GPU not the CPU. We have to wait for the 65nm GPU's. But remember it is not garrenteed that the 65nm chips will solve it.

i cant speak for anyone else but ive had my 360 for over a year now and havent had any major probs with it. certainly no RROD. i even ran it for around 9 hours straight playing gears, just to see if it would fail (this was before the new warranty and my 1 year was nearly up so i wanted to make sure my 360 was sound) and it passed with flying colours. no crash or lock up and the disc was perfect afterwards.

i'm on my 3rd xbox (its brand new!!!!!! Just arrived yesterday!!!!!). I doubt its %5-%10. Microsoft already stated that the RROD is a design flaw. this means everyone can have it. Hopefully the new heat sinks and 65nm GPU chip (not out yet) will make the problem %5.

If you get one of the newer XBox 360's (with HDMI) you'll have a lesser chance of getting th RROD. I would definitely get on, since you do get a 3yrs warrenty as well. So if you do get the RROD you can have it replaced for FREE by Microsoft. With all the great games out for the XBox 360, it's well worth it.

It's junk, but it's the junk with the best games and if I put up with the PS2 being crap to play the games why would I get all nervous about the 360 being the same way?

Warhawk was full of bugs and the leveling system is still broken after 4 server patch and restarts and 2 firmware updates and it's been out over a month now, plus you never hear about the PS3 design flaw where if you interupt the power or ISP during a firmware update it bricks the entire system and you have to get it reset at the repair center.

I also had a buddy that had the Wii defect where you get the little black static looking artifacts all over the screen and he had to sent it out for a repair.

None of the systems are gauranteed to work perfectly and if you want to play the games you have to take your chances.

Microsoft people have stated that there is a very high failure rate but you shouldn't let that deter you from buying one. It may have a flawed design but that doesn't change the fact that the library of games is far superior to any other next gen system out there. You shouldn't let the fact that the hardware MAY fail stop you from buying the system. Every piece of hardware ever made has the potential to fail.

it does have great games but I would tell people to wait. The ehad ache of the RROD and months of not having it is just horrible. I'd say wait until the 65nm GPU chip comes out. It shouldn't be long. If you do buy one get the Halo edition or the elite.

Actually it cost you time you could be playing your Xbox 360... you can't get time back.

Also it only cost you nothing for 3 years... I kind of plan to play my consoles for longer then that... I still play my SNES, and N64 simi regularly.

So,all of you who are 360 owners,am I garanted to get the red rings of death??

Cbot

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if you did got one, and neither should you. And yeah, wait for the Falcon, and a way to identify them. Supposedly LOT 0734 consoles and forward features the revised motherboard, I dunno. Make sure to get one of those anyway. The GPU is still 90nm, but the 65nm CPU should lessen the chance of this particular error.

ive had other rings but never the 3

i had the 2 rings(over heating) and 1(harware error)

the only time i had to send it back was when it stoped reading discs. and they were pritty quick about it so it was no biggie

Raider47
And that's another thing, the three year warranty only covers "general hardware failure", the three red lights of death. There are lots of other issues, the three red lights is just the most common.

6th xbox.............!!!

Does anybody remember that guys name that was on his 12th xbox360? The guy that actually proved it by recording his call with xbox tech support and had them read off all his service tickets to date? 12 in under 2 years... at 3-6 weeks to get a system back, he's probably spent more time without one than he has with one. All the games in the world mean nothing if you can't play them.

i never got red lights so idk

clone01

none of my friends have either...its PS3 fanboy propaganda. its the only thing that they can argue with.

Wow. Can't believe people like you still exist. Thought they all went away when Microsoft admitted there was a design flaw and issued a three year warranty which set them back a minimum of $1 billion.

But wait, your friends haven't had any problems! That changes everything! ...

And that Kotaku guy is on his 9th or something. I'm on my 4th I think. I'm starting to lose count.

I have no idea where people are getting this 33% number from though. If it's from the retailer stories, 33 is also the number of your IQ.

Well, the only thing stopping me from purchasing a 360 is it's hardware issues.

I feel your pain part of what keeping me from getting one is the hardware issues also. But it more my wife will not let me buy one until the problem goes away. But she will allow me to get a PS3 so I am good.

Zhengi

Well, the falcon chips are already in circulation.... I would think the problem would be fixed, but if it's not, then we probably wont see one until the end of the life-span... lol

BUT, the falcon chips, imo, will fix the 360. There will still be hardware failures and RRoD's, but EVERY console has defects, including the ps3 and Wii. But I think the common failure that most people experience will be fixed, which is mainly proven to be caused by heat.

In any case, to the TC: I would personally find out what model number the Falcon chips started appearing in, and buy one manufactered after that. The falcon chips should fix the problem. Even if they don't, which is a big IF, you'll still be happy with your 360. Sure, it's a huge pain to have a console fail, but at least you'll have a free 3 year warranty, and the 360 experience CANNOT be matched right now. It has the best and most games, best graphics (so far), fantastic controller, and the online experience is beat by nobody, as long as you're not too cheap a small fee for it.

If she was smart, lol, she'd let you get a 360 over a ps3 even if the hardware problem was WORSE than it is now. lol

You can't say that.

The falcons are in circulation, so nobody can tell if they have fixed the problem, or what the failure rate will look like now. But there's hope, and the chances of it being fixed are more positive than negative.

Wow, the failure rate is not THAT bad in any way. That guy should never walk outside of his house, as he has the worst luck I've ever seen. A plane will probably crash ONTO him, or his furnace will probably blow up, or he'll get aids from thin air.
