In 2005-2006, this game demo was showcased as the example of a quadcore-DirectX 10 optimized engine. Featuring a gorgeous open huge forest world with impressive draw distance while managing still fine details. This was seen a game in which M$ could finally convince hardcore gamers to upgrade to windows vista.

But now is mid 2009 and this game has de-evolved into another fogy corridor shooter, technically not match to even the original Stalker. The reason is quite simple and sad: sometime down the road the 360 became the lead (and possibly the only) SKU for this game. Making the original vision technically impossible.

Another example of the 360 holding gaming back.

look i'm a HUGE SONY FAN..but alan wake looks very very nice, of course it isn't going to look like it did a couple of years back, just go look at the prototype for Resident Evil 4 (it looks WAY different the the orignal product).. i don't see how the 360 is holding it back, but that's just me

Yep its sad really. And theirs also no reason why this game had to be dumbed down even if it was on 360.

I guess it must suck to be you then. If you are so worried about console gaming holding back PC gaming, then buy PC exclusives only. Problem solved.

The rest of us will buy and likely enjoy the game.

because it was technically more impressive before 360 was lead platform and Remedy's main focus. Now its a linear scripted game.

Wow, they did not do it because the 360 could not take it, they did it for the sake of better story telling. Brightfalls will be there and the game will not be completly linear, they will probably let you explore it when you are finished with the game.

If memory serves me correctly, it was changed because of the story demanded it to be changed; not the Xbox 360's limited power compared to the PC.

lol, dude, then how do you explain other open world games like Fallout, Oblivion, GTA 4, Fuel..etc. This gen, devs also have the option of "procedural terrain" that all but eliminates the need to render the whole environment at one time, or eliminates the need for assets to be placed by artists. Research before you blindly bash something. Some stories dont do well with with open world, some do. thats it.

It looks better than many linear games(this game is this not completely linear), and yea FUEL is huge. But yea it isn't the 360, it is for story.

"Downgrading" Alan Wake graphically is not holding gaming back. If anything, it's holding a technology upgrade back. Developers already know that if they have more power, they can do more. If they can do more, then maybe new ideas can come. This isn't anything new.

If you're thinking where M$ can make money, well then yeah, then they may be losing money by downgrading but they're not holding back gaming.

Lol. I love the "blame the 360 for holding back gaming" theories.

It isn't the developers fault at all. :|

You should be blaming PC pirates for this. It's not the Microsofts fault that most pc games get pirated to death now a days, and because of this and xbox360 gamers unfailing ability to actually buy games you have the situation we are in today. Its sad for me because I used to love PC gaming over everything but anymore I don't even have the desire to build/buy a new pc in the future due to pc pirates.

As a PS3 owner I highly doubt it could do any better than the PS3.. The only system that could do a much better job if it was on the PC.

example of this thread as explained in a real life situation.

360 kid: *sits in his corner not affecting any thing*

Developer: Okay we need this and this to happen we'll use pc.

PC: *here he is in the middle of every thing*

Developer: nah we've decided to use 360 instead

Developer: *grabs 360 kid and forces him into the limelight*

Publich: why does this thing they need to happen not look as good as it used to be?

As you can see how is the 360 holding it back? its not, its been put into a position where it is trying to do the load of what a super expensive and high end system years ago was capable of doing, something not even the ps3 could do, as you can see its not the 360 holding the game back, its the developer and you the consumer expecting a 200-400 dollar system to outpreform and still keep the same game, and same development as a system that likely cost 2000 or more dollars years ago when you first saw the game on a quad core direct x 10 system.

Blame the developers not the system its on, they could have easily kept it a pc game if they wanted but they wanted money.

"Fogy corridors" is a designer decision. Xbox 360 consoles did not fire psychic mind waves at the headquarters of Remedy Entertainment to force them to create the game that way.

In same cases, the lack of tessellation hardware in NVIDIA GPUs (pre-40nm releases) is holding gaming back. One could use geometry shader or CUDA for some tessellation work, but this reduces the available shader resources.

Geforce 8600GT/9500/9600M's CUDA 32 shader model was replaced by CUDA 48 shader model (e.g. Geforce GT220 DX10.1 40nm release) for NV's mainstream segment.

The replies in this thread are one of the prime reasons why gaming is dead/dying.
