ive heard alot about it, and ive done research, cuz all of the years ive had a 360, none of my games ever got scratched, ever. ive had gta 4 for a year......not a single one, so i researched......i see these cats flippin tha 360 upside down while tha disk spinnin, slidin it across tables and s^%$#...why??? even standing it vertical, if u know ur cat likes to run around, or anytype of pet, or if u got kids runnin all through tha house, why on EARTH would you have it vertical??? Why would you want to move your system with the disk spinnin? thats just like when i read about people puttin ps3 in sauna's to see how long they last...man....smh

I owned an Xbox 360 and it scratched one of my games and I did not touch it. It was laying horizontal and I heard weird noises coming from it so I took the disc out and it was scratched and became unreadable.

My nieces put 3 DVDs in my brothers PS3 on top of his Call of Duty game. He had to lift it up and shake them out. All 4 came out and he put Call of Duty back in and played it without any problems.

There was a dutch pro-consumer tv program that did a research on this matter. They proved that the 360's do scratch disks. Search it on youtube. /Thread

I've also never had a disc scratched(game installs), but I do know it does indeed scratch discs.

My second 360 took chunks out of my Saints Row and Viva Pinata discs as it was lying perfectly flat with nothing in its vicinity. I don't know if Microsoft has taken measures since, but I haven't heard much of this issue for the last couple of years.

Conspiracy. The 360 has no faults now. We all know this. And anyone that says otherwise is a troll. lol

the 360 has always scratched discs, period, whether or not it was laying flat or vertical

mine is kept vertical, cuz i dont have enough space for it on my stand, and because it vents better...also my discs dont have any chance of warping....

never heard of it doing this without someone moving the console... this will probably scratch discs whether you do it on any of the consoles

I moved my console while playing Rockband 2 and destroyed the disk. That aside Ive had no problems. Blockbuster has a disk cleaning service that helped it right up (alternatively you could rent scratched game and swap disks)

Too bad for the nay sayers a dutch consumer program called Kassa proved that 360 scratches discs when laying down and not moving them. Like someone in this thread said search youtube for it.

my 360 pro launch system stayed in its entertainment center horizontal it was never moved except when to clean...and it never scratched a single disk and it still works today.
My elite that lasted for 2 years before e74 stayed in the same place, horizontal was never moved except when it needed cleaning it never ever scratched a single disk, my elite refurb which was sent to me in a week and 2 days was never moved of another 2 years and never scratched a single disc, My halo reach 360 slim which i've had for a month or so now hasn't scratched a single disk yet and I've thrown all my discs in installed em, uninstalled em, installed em, played em.

we all know they were moving the system at some point edging it up and down under the table, or out of camera view.

My 360s ENORMOUS power block makes a buzzing sound when near my Denon amp. I had to move my PS3 between the two in order to polarize the negative charge the 360 was giving off.

ive had 7 Refurbs/repairs from microsoft, since launch on my premium xbox 360. One of them, scratched a game i was playing (only time it was moved was for cleaning, and there was not a game in it). So yeh in my experience it can scratch discs.

I've had five 360's. None of them have experienced this E74 error. So you're obviously lying. And since you haven't had four 360's break on you that means I'm lying about that. Logic.

we all know they were moving the system at some point edging it up and down under the table, or out of camera view.WilliamRLBaker

Yeah they're obviously lying too. Entirely unthinkable that the 360 would have hardware issues.

I thought the main cause of this was the disk bouncing around on it's tray when people played music with strong base?

i did that too then there was a blinding flash of light and great scott! i ended up here in this thread from 2007!

anyway don't pick up your 360 and shake it about and you should be ok. it's still ms fault in the end though since they should have made the system not scratch discs when you tap dance on it.

My 360 played DJ with my Mirror's Edge disc... had to wait some months later to buy it at a cheaper price :(

Couldn't even repair it, the scratch went 3 layers too deep.

I had my original 360 scratch my new copy of GTA4, but that was because my cousin moved the console while playing. Anyone saying it scratched it on its own is just being silly because Centrifugal force keeps the disc in place and level unless acted upon by an outside force.....IE moving the console. Is science wrong?

I got rid of my 360 for this very reason. Double agent, crackdown, Gears 1 and Dead Rising all got damaged. I left my console horizontal on a separate open-air, stable tv stand and only used my wireless controller so there was never a time when i was moving the console contrary to what the stupid 360 customer support claimed was the reason for the scratches.

Guys just buy a slim and you should be fine. I had my ME2 disk(forgot to take it out)in my 360 while in the trunk of my car when I rode from Atlanta to NC. I drive really fast darting in and out of traffic and the disc didn't have a scratch. I didn't even use the 360 when I got up to NC so I never took it out of the box since my g/f didn't have a working TV to use it on. It wasn't until I got back home to ATL that I had realized I had left the disc in the machine and I even had the 360upside down in the box. I mean if the 360 is so easy to get a scratch why didn't I have not one on mine after this episode. I do believe the older models probalbly had issues but the slim is built well.

Okay, Lets see now.... First it was the RROD Second it's this Disc scratching Third and most recently the faulty HDMI jack...... I'm really starting to feel relieved i switched to a PS3, all these 360 hardware problems just aren't worth the expense and headaches.

Pbjb989

If that was the case, shouldn't that be something Microsoft should've designed the console to be able to handle? They want you to place the thing in your entertainment center, play games, movies and music. Now they also want you and your kids to jump and stomp around with Kinect. So I would hope that they have made it vibration-proof since it scratched my games to death. (I think they have.)

I had my original 360 scratch my new copy of GTA4, but that was because my cousin moved the console while playing. Anyone saying it scratched it on its own is just being silly because Centrifugal force keeps the disc in place and level unless acted upon by an outside force.....IE moving the console. navyguy21

Jesus christ dude, what the **** do I know? Maybe the lens moving around caused a whiff of air that made dust particles fly up and unbalance the disc? All I know is that it happened and there was nothing going on externally that would cause the thing to make *GA-GACK* noises.

Yeah, I lost my original Rock Band and Gears 1 discs that way. The Gears disc, I'm pretty sure I bumped the TV stand, rather lightly though so its kind of amazing to lose $60 for that. The Rock Band one I wasn't even near the 360. I just heard a grinding noise, walked over, took the disc out, and a perfect ring was now carved into the disc, rendering it unusable.

I've owned 2 360's and never had a disc scratched :?

Obviously it happens, but it makes me wonder if people are swinging the 360 around their heads with the power cord :P

I had my Gears 1 disc damaged the very day I bought the console. I was unaware of the problem and just wanted to move it to a vertical position. I was very gentle about it, but it didn't matter. Now I know better. I know it's not the most reliable source so don't get all over me for it. but according to Wikipedia, "Almost at the same time the Xbox 360 was released in late 2005, customers began reporting rounded scratches found on discs used in their Xbox 360 consoles. Almost two years later, in February 2007, the website 'The Llamma's Adventures' investigated the matter and concluded that some Xbox 360 drives lack a mechanism to secure the disc solidly in place. Tilting or moving consoles with these drives, when operating with a disc spinning inside, can potentially cause damage to the disc, in some cases rendering the disc unusable. Discs have also been scratched by stationary consoles during normal use." I wonder how many more cents it would have cost to include the so-called mechanism. I mean hell, 15 year old Discmans can withstand all sorts of movement and abuse without damaging your discs, but a five year old console cant? The bottom line is if we want to keep playing XBOX360 games, we're just going to have to be careful and accept the risks.
