I know nextgenwars.com is not the best site to go to, but I find it amazing that the Wii has been out for about 6 months and sold a little over 5,000,000.

In a matter of 1 year and 6 months the Xbox 360 has sold pretty close to 11,000,000.

The Wii has been out for 1/3 of the life span of the Xbox 360, yet they are half way to catching up in sales.

Is is possible that the Xbox 360's head start will mean nothing in due time?

This also brings up another thing. As many people know, the Xbox 360 is popular in the U.S, Europe and Australia. The Wii is also popluar there as well, but one place where it is 10x more popular is Japan. Yeah I know, Japan is not the only country in the world that matters when it comes to videogames, but it is proven that a console's success has been strongly related to high sales in the U.S. and Japan.

In the end, will Xbox 360's head start matter much unless they got a stronger foothold in Japan? Blue Dragon helped out but still nothing significant in terms of console sales. The Nintendo Wii's sales indicate that popluarity in Japan does matter, look how fast they sold 5,000,000.

Yep 360 launched before the correct tranistional period for consoles ...

This means that the majority were happy to wait a year for PS3 and Wii to launch and it minimises the potional gain 360 could get ...

 http://www.vgcharts.org/

This shows more accurate figures ...
   Xbox 360 at      - 9.66 million sold ...
   Wii at               - 6.03 million sold ...
   Playstation 3 at  -2.67 million sold ...

If Wii continues at this rate it may surpass Xbox 360 by the end of the year ...
PS3 also is doing better than people think ...

if the 360 stops selling in all regions? then yes
But it hasn't and more and more games are being released, What matters to publishers are current numbers not future.
Lots of games are comming out for 360 this year, hell halo 3 alone gurantee's atleast 2m sales of the system.

wii and 360 don't compete. they'll always be those who want one or the other.

It's big enough to get all the extra development support it wouldn't otherwise be getting and that's going to be important. GTA4, Virtua Fighter 5, Ace Combat 6 and DMC 4 probably wouldn't be on 360 or in the case of GTA4 would be time exclusive if it were not for the early launch. It also wouldn't have got Lost Planet and Dead Rising as exclusives if it launched after the competition.

The 360's head start was huge. If they did not have the 10million+ sold right now you would not see ps3 loosing exclusives.
