So another dev says that the consoles will atleast go and improve for the next 6 years...

"We're now going on eight years since the Xbox 360 launched and many are wondering when the definitive moment was that saw the current-gen consoles "capped" at their maximum capabilities. Perhaps more important is how long it will be before the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One reach their limit."

Depends on what they mean. It would be easy to make a game today that no computer in the world could render (start with a bouncing ball. Then double the amount of balls until the computer crashes). If they mean that devs will be able to make noticably better looking games, by smarter utilising the resources, then that could go on for a long time (with the size of the improvement getting smaller and smaller). Six year sound reasonable in this latter sense.

Year 2: Game is released that uses the true power of the Playstation 4. Year 3: Game is released that truly uses the true power of the Playstation 4. Neither systems launch games will look as good as their games in two years, and the same will happen after that. Devs get familiar with systems sand devkits, learn new tricks, and figure out how best to take the power the system offers and mold it into the game they want to make. That's why specs mean so little. What they say a system can do, and what that dev uses it for with all the bells and whistles going to create their universe are two very different things. Both the PS4 and Xbox One will continue to produce better and better looking games for years to come. Just like the 360 and PS3 did.

lol Bethesda...

What they mean is that normal developers will reach max potential in 3-4 years, Bethesda will take 6-7 years to get there.

After 7 years they STILL dont know how to program for the PS3, so this comment from them is not surprising at all.

LMAO, so true. Apparently the Xbox One graphics will not improve at all. I just think specs don't tell the story as far as gaming goes because its the dev who creates their own verse and molds that around what the console can do with all the things running that they require. Game development is just not a straight line. Never has been or will be. A great dev like ND or Bungie or Turn 10 or Remedy could make great Wii-U games cause they are great devs, not cause of what the system can do graphically. There is nothing impressive underneath the hood of either next gen console. Its the devs, games, and features that I will judge. I don't play a sheet of specs, I play games.

Cellphone cpu and a 7770 certainly will take 6 years to max, yes. Ps3 was capped in 09 with Uc2, 360 been capped in 08 with Gears 2 so gtfo with your bs Bethesda.

Skyrim does have bugs. It's the price to pay, when you make a game this ambitious and massive. Skyrim on PS3 is a terrible port, mostly due to PS3's terrible hardware design.

The Xbox One and PS4 only have X amount of total performance. How the devs choose to use it is up to them. As time passes devs come up with more efficient algorithms to better utilize that power. However they still have a limit of how much power they have.

We saw that last gen. We saw devs utilizing the hardware in more efficent ways and optimizing their code so they wouldn't waste as much performance and make better use of their limited performance. That's why we saw better graphics at the end of the generation. However those devs cannot turn the consoles into something they aren't. The consoles will continue to age as PC hardware continues to progress. That's just how it is.

Here's an example. A game like Gears of War was pushing the Xbox 360 to its max. However it wasn't nearly as efficient. The Xbox 360 was probably running at 100% during the more graphically intense sequences. As Epic continued to refine their engine and spend mony into R&D to come up with more efficent rendering solutions they were able to take that same amount of hardware and go a bit further with it. The whole "maxing out a console" saying is complete bull. Most 3D games max out the console. They just may not do it in a very efficent manner.

Also once you have more efficent algorithms in place to fully utilize the hardware, it's up to the dev to choose how to distribute that power. Do you go with a more cartoony/soft approach with lower resolution environments while putting all of that extra power into rendering more diverse obects? Do you go with 1 super high detailed character or 10 moderatly detailed characters? It becomes a choice.

Look at Bioshock Infinite. That game looked great and ran well while having decent sized envrionments and a lot going on all because they decided to go with a more cartoony and simple look instead of more realistic graphics. It's all a choice.

Many developers actually gave up trying to developer for the PS3. Others never even made the attempt. so I'm not surprised. It's one of the reasons 3rd party games played like crap on the PS3 initially.

It's not a stagnant system, so of course it won't. That's why it doesn't have any generations as well. lol!!

Pc's are constantly evolving every weak. You think you have the Highest HIGH-END Gaming PC ever. Nope, you don't. There's always some better then what you have when it comes to PC's.

And? Should it matter to you as a player? I mean, you can still play almost anything (crysis 3 doesn't count) on the highest settings (1080p, not 4k, obviously.) with a gtx670. It's far from being the fastest gpu, but it still beats anything on consoles (even ps4 and xbox one).

Bethesda games are bland, I don't see how they keep getting award after award. All the animations are the same, the voice acting is terrible and they are always full of bugs! The only reason the PC versions work is because most of the bugs were fixed by modders. I find it shocking that the player has to download and install 3rd party content to actually make the game playable.

I played through vanilla Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Skryim without many issues. There were more bugs than your average game of course (especially New Vegas), but they were far from unplayable and were really fun.

They get award after award becuase the games are anything but bland. There is a ton of variety and a lot of things to do as well as often great writing and characters.

It may be your opinion that they are bland but that's certainly not the popular opinion.

FONV was Obsidian but I agree I think Beth's games are good if a little sterile. My fav is still Morrowind, it felt like a real changing world the first time I played it.

Lame excuses...

A look at Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, The Last of Us, God of War 3, God of War Ascension and even Kingdoms of Amalur (3rd party, big open world, run perfectly without bugs) say that Bethesda is lazy as f*ck!

After more than 1 year and loads of patches, and the game still runs like shit.

Right...lol

Let me be clear here....i do love linear games, like the ones you posted (especially Uncharted 2 and God of War 3) and many others, but they are 6 hour scripted experiences. On the other hand, i did put close to 400 hours on Skyrim (no DLC) and still have missions to start and places to visit. Someone who can't find the difference between a complex game like Skyrim and a linear game like GoW, can't be taken seriously.

Amalur is neither linear or short....

Did you bother to read what i wrote??

I spent 100h in Amalur and didnt do everything, its not as big as Skyrim, but its still a big game, and for the 1st game of 38 Studios it ran 100x better than Skyrim.

I didn't play it yet, but the other ones are very bad examples. I'm not blindly defending Bethesda, TES games do have lots of bugs, but they are also very complex and unpredictable. You can't bash a dev for being ambitious.

Don't know how anyone can buy into 3rd party developer bs. Bethesda still can't get a game running glitch free on the ps3 or 360. They have no clue what they are talking about
