So the NX launches and is stronger than both X1 and PS4 then MS upgrades X1 to be stronger than both and leaves PS4 as the weakest console.

Man, SW will be even more fun soon. :P

This gonna be gud. lol

The Story.

----

Xbox One Hardware Upgrade in the Pipeline, Says Phil Spencer

"You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation."

Microsoft has said it is building towards a future where its games consoles will be upgradable, allowing the company to keep hardware viable by incrementally increasing its power instead of replacing it with an entirely new device.

Speaking at a recent media event, as reported by Polygon, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he believes that Windows 10 could be used as a ubiquitous operating system that unifies all its devices, while the various hardware it runs on evolves, similar to the way PC are upgraded.

"We see on other platforms, whether it be mobile or PC, that you get continuous innovation that you rarely see on console,' he said. "Consoles lock the hardware and the software platform together at the beginning of the generation. Then you ride the generation out for seven or so years, while other ecosystem are getting better, faster, and stronger. And then you wait for the next big step function."

He continued: "When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Since Microsoft has "a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform," it will be able to improve hardware "without invalidating the games that run on that platform."

It is not clear whether this means second-gen Xbox One games can run on first-gen hardware.

He continued: "We can effectively feel a little bit more like we see on PC, where I can still go back and run my old Doom and Quake games that I used to play years ago but I can still see the best 4K games come out and my library is always with me.

"Hardware innovation continues while the software innovation is able to take advantage and I don't have to jump a generation and lose everything that I played on before."

You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation

Phil Spencer

Asked to elaborate later, Spencer noted that Sony is doing something similar to this in the way it is adding VR capabilities to the PS4. When PlayStation VR launches, it will include a standalone device with its own processor to handle computation for the device.

"Sony is doing this with VR and adding VR capabilities mid-cycle to the PlayStation 4 and they are doing that by adding another box. I don't mean that as a negative. But it's not changing what the core console is about.

"For consoles in general it's more important now than it's ever been, because you have so many of these other platforms that are around. It used to be that when you bought your console you were way ahead of the price performance curve by so much, relative to a PC. But now PCs are inexpensive and your phones are getting more and more capable."

Despite all this, Spencer did not provide any concrete details on whether Microsoft plans to upgrade the Xbox One, or introduce a whole new platform in the future that can be iterated on in the way described above.

"I'm not going to announce our road map for hardware," he said. "I want to make sure that people see that what we are doing enables us to be more committed to what consoles are about than we've ever been and innovate more consistently than we ever have. That's the key for me."

Yeah but to be fair, Sega was no MS, the largest software company and with Win10 and boat loads of cash, just sayin. :P

He's talking about software running better on current hardware. At least that's what it sounds like to me. And it doesn't sound like this is happening with the Xbox One, but future consoles. In essence, he's talking about MS branded steam boxes.

Basically this or we would have to buy a revised xboxone with these upgrades. I look at my xboxone, ps4 I don't see an easy way for me to upgrade anything significant really. The reference to the psvr breakout box is a bit overblown.

Sounds like he's talking about the Cloud and Dx12 intergration. They've been talking about that and working on that since the console was launched and before that probably so maybe they are getting close to having that be used on the X1.

I like this idea, BUT it shouldn't be too frequent, maybe upgrade every two years or so.

Edit: It would be nice if the upgrade would make the existing games run better too.

Perhaps but it's not as much fun on SW if you put it that way lol. :P

We need this to keep consoles relevant, otherwise tablets and mobile will out perform consoles in a couple of years. Thank you Phil for saving console gaming.

Listen how things will be

- NX will be as weak as X1 , if not weaker , and as Nintendo did with Wii and Wii U that of promoting everything else than hardware specs so will with NX. And thats a bad sign not only for the system as a whole but for 3rd party support as well considering we might see PS5/X2 in 2018/2019 ... so will NX have this pathetic lifespan GC/Wii and Wii U had , that of 2-3 years max ? Most probably yes.

- As for X1 , forget any significant hardware upgrades. Simple as that. Many reasons why to ... First of all X1 as a brand is already hurt and for them to invest more and more millions to try to push an already "failed" product make no sense. Then what MS will say to all those that already own an X1 ? " Sorry guys , you are victims , you should have wait for X1 ver.2 ? That will hurt them in the long run as a brand. Then what about pipelines and shit ...when you already have specific LOW END hardware ?

- As for PS4 , will remain the " most powerful " console and will easily win this generation. The only system might stop its momentum and hype is NX and that IF NX bring it big time with GAMES on its release while will be getting all AAA 3rd party games as well , and not with fancy hardware/controller gimmicks.

Everything else is just marketing talk and who the hell will fall for that ? I know i wont . We had the removal of Kinect will make X1 more powerful to DX12 to patches and shit ... Nothing changed .. MS is in such a damage control the last 2 years that theyll try to convince everyone possible in order to make them go buy an X1.

That would be good to keep console's hardware up to date, but history tells me it's not a good idea (MegaCD, 32X, 64DD, etc).

At the expense of annual hardware revisions no one but a really hardcore few will buy? Don't think anyone cares.

These consoles are already hilariously underpowered and we're stuck with them for a few more years. This sounds like a good thing to me.

A hardware upgrade isn't the answer for Xbox One. Exclusive games is the answer but Spencer is giving them all to PC. There is no reason to buy an Xbox One over PS4 which is a better console and has loads of genuine exclusives and if you have a PC you already have an Xbox One. Spencer is genuinely stupid.

Im rereading your post, and I dont think you understand the implication here. A new model with a hardware bump would replace the old one. Like the Slim PS3 and 360s replaced the vanilla versions of those consoles. The same games working on both platforms but at a higher resolution/framerate is all software.
