Sony = hardware manufacturer, MS = software manufacturer
That explains the different visions in cooling (its the cooling that doesnt allow the X1 to be placed vertically), Sony can just fecth parts from other Sony depts at production cost and assemble a proper device (ps3 cooling fans were the most expensive/effective of the time).
It also explains the different approach in hardware design, MS went for single APU taking performance reserve for background tasks (10%) like video recording/streaming, apps, while Sony can just grab a ARM chip from another dept for background tasks, and a dedicated video/audio chip from its camcorder dept for the vid streaming recording and audio processing. Sony camcorder dept has dedicated audio/video chips that allow recording of 1080p60 directly to HDD with a memory footprint of 256kb-2mb, and virtually NO cpu usage.
There are clear advantages of being a BIG hardware manufacturer when it comes to getting parts for a new device.
