I thought this was pretty interesting, piggy backing your PlayStation 4 through the Xbox One S appears to actually upscale PlayStation 4 games to 3840x2160.

If you own an Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 this could actually serve as very useful for improving the image quality of your PS4 games on a 4K TV.

I don't have one personally but doesn't the input still show up as 1920x1080? For this it's actually pre-converting the signal to 3840x2160 through the console before it hits the TV, I'm curious if it's a better method.

Also, apparently this guys TV does not do its own conversion, it simply stretches the image.

According to this guy his model does not and if his does not I would assume the same of others, maybe some just stretch the image and pixel fill? He makes note and highlights the fact that the input signal is 2160p, and by doing so it would imply that when the PlayStation 4 is hooked up solely that the input is 1920x1080.

On top of this the Xbox One S conversion might actually be better than what TV's can provide, it's the same logic of 1080p Blu-Ray players with DVD upconversion, the methods used by the device are much better than what the TV does itself and greatly improves the image quality.

Microsoft’s Jeff Henshaw officially confirmed that there is lag with the HDMI pass through (fine with movies, but not so good for gamers), not to mention there will be less audio options and the accepted native resolution potentially lowered, but yes, after those kick in, Xbone S potentially could upscale the remaining image of said device (although 4K TVs do this, but perhaps lower end monitors do not), in this case the device being a PS4.

Then there is other factors:

The problem is that the Xbox One does need to process, or at least "touch" the video in order to overlay the One Guide, etc on top of the source video. TVs add latency (some worse than others, typically the cheaper the set, it gets worse) as well, some more than others. Likewise for AVRs/receivers.

After testing my 360 and other gaming devices in my Xbone over the years (Wii U, PS3, PS4, etc), I couldn't hack it (there was a image quality drop, then upscaled, in addition to the latency). I don't use the pass through for games or Blu-Ray, but I have connected regular DVD player in the past.

It's real, tons of videos on the latency are around, I'll grab one for the forum.

I realize that there is some latency but after testing it myself it appears to be extremely minimal, to a point of being essentially negligible. It's even to a lesser degree than what is experienced by streaming games from the system to a PC for example which is already extremely low latency.

That is hilarious and awesome at the same time. Also highlights that sony is really f***in up by not include this with the slim. I guess they will just push Neo and There TVs. Post proves my point that uncharted is a fantastic dynamically looking game. You have gone and done it TC this thread will be followed by the usual stealth UC4 shit post threads.

This is too rich. Can't beat Sony? Take their console and literally hook it up to yours. Voila.

But seriously, the inherent lag with doing something like this immediately defeats it.

All 4K TV's upscale images to 4K to display them on the screen. The quality is determined by how good (or not) your TV is at upscaling the image. The Xbox One S won't affect the final image as it depends on the components in the TV and what kind of processing they use. Cheap 4K TV's will display shit 1080p material no matter what the source of the image.

I bought my 4K TV on the basis most reviews said it had 'best in class' upscaling. I really wish people would stop saying Xbox One S, Neo, whatever, upscales to 4K as though they automatically transform a 1080p image into a 4K one, they don't. It's ridiculous to assume they would. They fill in the missing pixles on a best guess basis to display the image on your 4K screen and some TV's are better at it than others.

If you have an Xbox One and you're considering buying an S because it has a 4K bluray player then go ahead and do it, that's the benefit you will get. It will NOT transform your games into 4K, that idiot Spencer started this confusion with the S by implying it upgrades games to 4K because he simply didn't understand WTF he was talking about or how any of it works.

The Wii U doesn't upscale Wii games. The Wii U goes into an actual Wii emulator mode.

Before you explain that although there was no scientific test, the 2006 Wii looked better to you on 2012s Wii U:

If you never had progressive scan enabled on Wii, then the Wii games will look nicer on Wii U but that's due to the TV / connection and not the Wii U as the Wii could have done the same had you owned and bought better component cables for the Wii (not using the composite or AV cables bundled in). I owned 1080p HDTVs before the Wii released in 2006, so I had bought the best cables I could at launch and left the store with my Wii and component video cables. I never even messed about with a Wii U, Wii, or even Gamecube for that matter on basic AV cables.

I already know this as I buy and test Nintendo's consoles at launch (NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, etc), but don't take my word on it, Nintendo already spoke on the matter below.

Here's three quotes from Nintendo (Reggie Fils-Aime, Mark Franklin, and other Nintendo Reps) themselves explaining the Wii U doesn't upscale games to 1080p:

Will the Wii U render my old Wii games in HD? (LINK)

No. In an interview with Giant Bomb, Mark Franklin, head of PR for Nintendo, revealed that the Wii U would not "up-res" or upscale Wii games to an HD resolution.

Furthermore, 1up has provided a quote from Reggie Fils-Aime in which he says, in response to this question, "It will not do that. That's really driven by the hardware, and the original Wii games were built for a specific type of hardware. There's no mechanism to quote-unquote 'up-res' that unless we launch a brand-new game."

Finally, Ben Kuchera from Wired reports that he was "flatly told" by...

...Nintendo representatives that "the hardware [Wii U] will NOT be able to improve the resolution of Wii games."

It is important to note, that if you are using the old red, yellow and white composite cables on the Wii then yes, the games will look significantly better on the Wii U. This is because, the old RCA cables only offer 480i and not true 480p.

If you bought red blue green component cables for Wii however then the games will look the same on Wii U.

I tried playing my PS3 through the Xbox One S, so I could play 720p games upscaled to 1080p. I had to unplug it from the Xbox after only a couple of minutes because the lag it caused was just too horrible for me to play anything through it.

Its a neat feature because the PS4 does not have 4K upscaling and still not sure the PS4 slim will have that feature? Buy an xbox slim or the Neo if you looking for a better image.

Actually, this guy owns a Vizio TV and he mentions that the upscaler doesn't exist (although I think it does but it sucks in Vizio brand TVs). If you had, say, a Sony or Samsung 4K tv, then chances are the TV scaler is better.

as long as you have a good quality 4kTV like a samsung, it won't be any different. If you have a cheap TV with a bad upscaler then you will see an image improvement. Also HDR won't work because the PS4 games won't have it so you won't see a benefit from that either.

Truthfully many people do by TVs with not so good upscalers, so yes the S will give an improved image. But if you have a nice samsung 4k TV, you won't see any difference
