There have been questions surrounding the future of Microsoft in the console space - even though the company is committed to launching the Xbox Scorpio later this year, their push towards Xbox as a service over the last few years has been enough to give everyone a bit of a pause and contemplate if the future of Xbox may not be as a device agnostic service, rather than as hardware.

However, speaking to Gamasutra in an interview, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has admitted that planning for what comes after Scorpio for Xbox in the console space - in other words, the next Xbox console - is already underway at Microsoft.

"I'm a strong believer in console, and what that appliance means in my family room, under my TV," Spencer said. "Like I think...I log in with a controller, it kind of has power options and auto-update options that just feel a lot more like my cable box than it does my laptop.

"I'm not saying one is better than the other, but that space of a console, you just turn it on and it's always ready and it's really purpose-built to go do one thing first, which is play games. Yes, people can do other things on it, but it's purpose-built for that. I'm a believer in that.

"And I've said, and this is actually true, the planning for what happens after Scorpio in the console space is already underway. You have to think about it that way. Like, what is the next thing? We -- I -- remain committed to the console space. We think it's critically important."

Spencer explained the recent push towards services that Microsoft has been making, pointing out that Microsoft views it as a supplement for Xbox consoles, not a replacement altogether.

"So put the gamer in the middle, build a service capability around them, and whatever device they sit down with, we've got the capability, let's bring them the experience we can bring them there. If the games can run natively on a PC, and they're on a PC, let's go let 'em play those games.

"Obviously on console, same thing. If they're on a mobile device, what can we do? In the case of like Minecraft and Solitaire and some other things, we can give 'em a game. In other cases we're going to bring 'em things like Beam, and their activity feed on Xbox Live, and the ability to chat with their friends on a service and device, wherever they are.

"So I definitely think about Xbox Live as something that's more pervasive than just sitting on the console. The console itself, I think, is a foothold for us, a strength for us, and something we definitely have longterm belief in."

This is perhaps the first clear indication that we have received of a proper Xbox One successor existing beyond the Scorpio- the question, of course, is just how much of a leap this mysterious new Xbox will be. Is it going to be another iterative update like the Scorpio, or will Microsoft jump ahead to a proper successor entirely?

For now, this is spitballing and speculation- but we can't wait to see what the future of Microsoft in the console gaming space may be.

At least we know now that next-gen consoles isn't quit dead yet, so that's good news to hear at least.

Well Microsoft was already dead, the whole company was dead after Xbox One launch. Nobody wanted the console, it was a complete utter failure, so big that everything else from Microsoft failed to. According to cows at least.

yeah with planning they mean a bit of random ideas during the xbox division night out at the local restaurant, celebrating the success of the scorpio announcement. Why would anyone care at microsoft what the plans are for a console 5 years away, the scorpio isn't even released yet.

Yeah, but I'm thinking that both Sony and MS will be done with Hardware after that and go with VR or at lest an all digital console.

I anticipate MS and Sony releasing a PC like console in the next five years...similar to Scorpio (more powerful obviously) but with the ability to upgrade it.

Actually, I'm preparing my wallet for a Scorpio purchase. Paid off all my CCs to do the thing if I like what I see at E3. Now, ya'll on the other hand, have some shit to own up to here.

This isn't "proof" of anything other than very smart and methodical PR. You can bet your ass if Scorpio doesn't manage to sell or somehow taints the brand even further, there will not be another XBox. That's just economics. Meanwhile, I am here to serve the humble pie since Lems are absolutely talking crazy this week. Microsoft promises have about the same atomic weight of unicorn tears and fairy wings.

Let's just see if this brand is even worth hanging on to this summer, let alone putting castles in the sky about XBox Zero or XBox Two or whatever you weirdos will start calling this.

Is this news? I'm pretty sure every company that makes things to sell will always have future plans even as soon as their product just released. From phones to televisions to cars and so on, once the new one comes out, plans for a newer one is already on the way. Is just how these things work.

But what is news is just like what other fellow users mentioned, I thought cows said there wouldn't be anymore Xbox consoles after the Xbox One. I could've swore I read things like how the current Xbox will be the last Xbox. But we know all that rubbish talk is just rubbish talk. The Xbox brand is just too popular, the Xbox brand is a stapled brand, having the Xbox brand is good for competition. So not having the Xbox brand around would probably have a negative impact in the gaming console business. I guess, well done MS, continue to do your thing.

Yea, but you should also have massive storage space on the console too by 2020ish when you'd expect to see these.

I hope they let Sony bring out the PS5 first and rabbit punch Sony again next gen for the win from the beginning.

MS has clearly demonstrated they are better at making hardware than Sony when they actually put some effort behind it.

MS outmaneuvered Sony at their own douchey game. Sony PR spun the entire beginning of this gen about 'superior hardware/superior multiplats/1080p'. Then the Pro was smuggly built and pushed out to outdo the Xbox One S and Sony got blindsided by Scorpio:

Blah blah its now all about the exclusives...Come Xmas we shall see.

At the moment I'd say game streaming is more Sony's plan than MS's, certainly if you look at the streaming plans available for each company.

@oflow: Another fanboy clown, MS have never won a generation, RROD fiasco etc. There mediocre HW makers, releasing Scorpio gives the heads up to Sony, PS5 2019 will wipe the floor with it.

What, MS going to release another in two years? You might as well trade in the Scorpio for PS5. You lot keep banging on about the best multi plat machine.

Of course planning is on the way. They probably have a 10 years business plan laying around and on it probably has "Next Xbox Launch" on it. Guarantee you that Sony has a thing.

The real question for them is, do they have a plan to fix their exclusive problem?

Consoles start planning at or before the release of a generation.

I'm sure ps5 and pro were in development when the ps4 released.

It actually seems late if they are only starting planning now.

Forza Horizon 3 is like the 9th entry in a long running series that has forever been pretty niche. Racing games are not a big system seller. So you've got a series that appeals to pretty much the fans of the existing series and nobody else. ReCore did not do very well score wise nor did it generate any real hype. Same with Quantum Break. Nobody was rushing to buy an Xbox One to play either of those games. Quality of exclusives matter. Gears of War 4 both was an average game and only appealed to a fanbase of a series that is pretty much dead. Sales and hype were lackluster.

Meanwhile Sony just released Horizon which, if you ever logged into the internet in the past two months, you can clearly see the buzz it created. It's got The Last of Us 2 on the way which, just the announcement dominated for a few weeks. It also has that Days Gone game coming up. Which is a new IP but, now that I think about it, really didn't generate any buzz at all.

Hype and excitement matter. Right now Nintendo is riding on a massive wave of it with Zelda and the Switch, but mostly Zelda. You see Zelda everywhere and that has direct impact on demand for the game and the systems its on.

Microsoft just has lacked that enthusiasm for any of its games. That's where the problem is. The Master Chief Collection's terrible launch and Halo 5's medicore single player really destroyed the excitement Halo brings. The 6th game in a series that has had two major blows to it lately and is clearly running out of gas isn't going to be that noteworthy. Odds are if you're a Halo fan, you already own an Xbox One. Halo 6 or Forza 7 aren't going to move consoles.

Crackdown 3 is the third entry in a medicore franchise with little hype behind it. Don't expect it to move any consoles.

Microsoft simply needs a new, exciting IP. Simple as that. ReCore could have been it, but the game ended up being meh. Scalebound never was going to because of Platinum, but its cancellation did not help the Xbox One.

Sounds like the PS5. PS4 is the only current gen console available with a Streaming service.

Xbox on the other hand has Game Pass where you have to down load the whole game in order to play it..........

Scorpio also refers to a constellation of stars. Polaris and Vega refers to current and former Northern star.

AMD's NAVI is a break from Star series GPUs.

28 nm era = Island series, GCN 1.1 and above has Volcanic Island series

14 / 16 nm era = Star series

7 nm era = NAVI??? navigation series??

Theme seems to be a ship travelling to different islands, navigated by the stars.

Sony is most certainly been planning for a while now. All companies do. Even Nintendo is currently planning to see if its worth taping 5 Gamecube together for their next system.
