Neither support actual 1080p, they are both upscaled. Sports games are exactly the same on the two, but if you like baseball the PS3 is the only one with MLB the show
Get the 360 because its cheaper, but you have to pay for online if you want to play that shooter
I would get a PS3.
Oh, and PS3 does support native 1080p (just depends on the game, like MGS4 or Uncharted). And PS3 can upscale EVERYTHING (including PSone and PS2 games, and regular DVDs). Just go to system settings --> video display options, and upconvert to 1080p. problem solved.
There's really no right answer to this at all. The fact that you only want to play sport games and the games like madden, NHL and NCAA are almost clone copies on both systems, it comes down to the fact how much money do you want to spend. I mean if you are honestly only interested in sports games (which is not a bad thing, I love them too) and you don't care much about exclusive games that each system has to offer there's not much of a choice really. Your going to get pretty much the exact same experience expect one costs more then the other.
If I was in your situation I'd just take the 360 due to the fact that its cheaper and the online tends to be much more polished then PSN which is really a big factor if you like multiplayer in your sports. But honestly you cant go wrong with the ps3 either. Its really just comes down to do you see your self wanting any other games that the ps3 has that the 360 doesn't? (MGS4 or Resistance for example) If by all means you see several games that you might like to try then go ahead and get a ps3. You cant go wrong either way.
I pretty much only play shooters and sports games and i have to say that the 360 is better for those type of games. As far as graphics go they are pretty much the same but the 360s online is unmatched if u like to play multiplayer.Psn isnt very user friendly and can be more agrevating than fun most of the time. The 360 has more games ,a better controller and is cheaper. At the end of the day though u need to decide which one offers more of what u want but i would definatly recommend the 360 over the ps3.loudharley
I agree with 360 is better for shooters but i prefer my PS3 for sports games, the PS3 controller is better for button bashing!
This is totally my opinion:
The 360's graphics are more appealing to me then the PS3's. Also, the library of games is waaay bigger than the PS3's.
I say 360!
its hard to say, if you like sports games made by EA it may be worth getting a 360, I dont know what their ps3 ports are like now but they wernt so good not long ago.
You say you want to play online, so then it may be a good idea to get a ps3 for the free online play. Dont take in system wars BS, PSN is good, the PS store is well layed out, you can download many things whilst doing other things on the ps3, the online play is good and you can now chat in game.
The deciding factor though for me would be what my friends have, if you like playing sports games online get what your friends have, then you can play against them. A year ago most people had 360's but now many people have ps3's too so maybe it does not matter as much as it did...
Frankly, when it boils down to graphics both Xbox and PS3 are equal. Really, you're not going to see the difference. And both upscale to 1080p unless natively supported. Depends on the game, developer etc.
I think the deciding factor for you will be how often you play online. If you play online often, and want a smooth experience then Xbox Live is better than PSN but keep in mind you have to pay $50 for one year of Live Gold. But if you're not willing to dish out the cash, PSN offers a credible service for free but is not as populous as Live.
I prefer the Xbox controller for my sports games but that is a matter of preference, so you should check out both controllers. Go with what you're comfortable with.
At the end of the day I would say go with the 360 because if you ever delve deeper than just the occasional shooter, the 360 has an excellent library already established and with more to come.
There's no denying, PS3 is the way to go. If it's the graphics you're going for, there's even more reason to go with the PS3 with games such as MGS4, Uncharted etc.
Also, may I add that the DualShock 3 controller is way better for sports games.
About me:
I only really play sport games, such as NHL and Madden, NCAA Football games. Although, I enjoy an occasional online multiplayer shooter (GRAW2).
I like to play theses on and offline.
I want the best graphics possible for my games, especially sport games. From my experience and what I've read, XBOX 360 supports full 1080p or upscales it, and Madden 08, 09 for example is crystal clear and smooth. However, when I played Madden 08, 09 on a PS3, it only played at 720p and that picture was jaggety and not smooth. I don't know why the sport games for PS3 are not supported in 1080p, when MGS4 and other games are.
I would get that XBOX 360 right off the bat because of the better graphics on the sport games, BUT is it possible that maybe later releases on the sport games will be in 1080p for PS3 such as Madden and NHL?
So my question is, from what I've stated above is should I get the XBOX 360 or PS3?Caligstar
It sounds like you already made up your mind on what system you're going to get. So why even bother asking here?

If sport games include racing games the 360 is the better option. PGR3, 4 and Forza2
I have both systems hooked up to the same hdtv. The 360 upscales Madden and NHL09 to 1080p, the PS3 only outputs 720p for those games, and yes, the ps3 setting is set to 1080p, but games that dont support 1080p automatically scale to 720p. Does it make much difference. No not really. I notice a slight difference in color between the two systems, but honestly i could not say one looks better than the other. PSN is free for your online needs, though you wont get certain useful features that a LIVE subscription will give you. You cant go wrong either way, it just comes down to the features you want and how much money you want to spend. Initially the 360 looks cheaper, but if you have to go wireless for online, then you might as well just get the PS3.
I don't play sports games but from what I understand the offical ESPN Madden tournaments use the Xbox 360. If you ever want to play at a tournament level it may be best to go with a 360. If you don't care about that then I would say the PS3 for free online. If you like online shooters then PS3 may also be the system for you with Warhawk and 60 person RFOM.
Get a PS3 it sounds like you don't play online enough to justify paying MS $50 every year. Online is free with PS3. Also PS3 has MLB 08 The Show and Hot Shots Golf, in my opinion the best sports games in their categories. And since you already have an HDTV you might as well get Blu-ray as well.
I would get a PS3.

Neither MGS4 or Uncharted are native 1080p, MGS4 runs at 1024 x 768 and Uncharted is 720p.

Why? Custom Soundtracks.
I use that feature for every sports game I play. And for every online game I play.

>_> yea, buying a console just b/c supports Cystom soundtrack (oh BTW,MCLA supports custom sound too for PS3 ;) )some price in-discrepancies: (these are based on buy.com)
13 months of xbox live: $39.98 free shipping
xbox 360 pro: 299.99 free shipping
white wireless controller: 36.06 with shipping
back wireless w/ rechargeable battery and play and charge: 52.99 free shipping
where is everyone coming up with these prices i'm seeing. i got these directly off of buy.com, its getting a lot cheaper to get a 360 with live, and an extra controller with rechargeable battery than to get a new 80 gb ps3 without the controller.
299.99 + 39.98 + 52.99 = $392.96 this is with an extra, rechargeable controller, 10 at walmart for another play n charge.
ps3 80gb with dual-shock at buy.com = $442.98 free shipping.
442.98 - 392.96 = $50.02 this is the real price difference, assuming you get 13 months of live and an extra rechargeable controller.
as for your decision, i can't really help. i like shooters way more than sports games, but both ps3 and 360 are good for either, though i do like the xbox 360 controller more.

I mainly only play sports game (mostly Madden) When I had the 360, i felt the $50 a year was a waste because I only played Madden 08 online, and for one game it's not worth it. Playstations free online is better for me because I dont get online like that.

Hate to burst your bubble, but none of those games are running in 1080p on the Xbox 360 or PS3. The XBox 360 has a better Video Card and GPU, which is why many of the multiplat games look better on the Xbox 360. Also.. many of those games are native on the XBox 360 and are ported to the PS3, so the graphics are slightly downgraded when they hit the PS3. Same thing that happened when all those PS2 games got ported to the XBox.
the problem with the 360 controler is u got to put batteries in it, with the ps3 controler just plug it into the ps3's usb port and bam its charging and u can continue to play, plus both anolog sticks on the bottom of the controler is better but the 360's controler feels more smooth.Nick3306
You can't play with the controller that's charging on the PS3, but you can with the Xbox 360 controller. Xbox 360 analog sticks work great, but the d-pad could be better. The 360 controller definitely feels better and won't cramp your hands like the PS3 controller does after long sessions. The PS3 does have a batter in it as well and when it dies, you'll either have to buy a new controller and manually open the controller and try to change it yourself. The XBox 360 has rechargable battery packs. They aren't that expensive.

Both systems have native 1080p games. It's a paltry list but both systems are capable and have native 1080p games.Neither support actual 1080p, they are both upscaled. Sports games are exactly the same on the two, but if you like baseball the PS3 is the only one with MLB the show

360 isn't really that much cheaper when you consider adding everything in: 100 bucks for the wireless adapter (if you choose to go wireless and you don't want to lug a bunch of wires around your house), cantor2537
It makes me cry everytime I see this nonsense. Do not have to use the MS wireless adapter. You can get a regular usb wireless bridge.
Also Ethernet>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Wireless, any firggin day of the week. So what if you have to run cable. Unless your router is is in a really remote place, it isn't even an issue. A little work for a more stable connection is worth it.
Here's a true comparison:
$399 Xbox 360 Elite
..or..
$399 (regular $599) GunMetal PS3 + MGS4 Special Edition bundle

but the difference being if you have a 50" 1080p tv like me the 360 upscales every single game to 1080 so when those games are compared to their PS3 counterpart (the PS3 doesnt have a upscaler built in) they only run at 720p and that doesnt look as good.

Again thats not true either. Recent multiplats look essentially the same on both systems. With some games looking better on PS3 as well.
How is a sale a true comparision?heretrix
Well I felt at ease buying a 360 Elite for $399.
Now with this Special Edition of PS3 going from $599 to $399, I think I got ripped.
So which bundle do you think has a better deal?

That really isn't the point. BUT, I guess there's no harm in using it as a comparison since it is an option. If you need to buy an extra wireless adapter, and keep the Xbox LIVE for several years, it works out being almost the same price as the PS3 (depending on which one you get). I have both consoles, and love them both. No. It will not upscale PS3 games. It leaves them in their native resolution, which is a better choice than upscaling.
