Microsoft will take a $1B charge due to an 'unacceptable' number of repairs under an extended warranty program.

Just to sorta correct you somewhat....the $1 billion is for the warranty program over time, not this moment. No offense or anything but you really need to find something else to do because you pretty much stretch the truth/fail at every topic you create. Hate the 360 and Halo as much as you want but they are still 2 of the best in the market.

They **** up big time. Mistakes happen, atleast their willing to pony up the cash to fix the mistakes. The only reason I haven't bought a 360 yet is because of all the stories about 360's breaking. I think I will now though, considering that their willing to fix the problem.

i don't see why MS won't fix the problem or even let the problem go on for so long that its going to cost them in the bank. a three year warranty good but who wants to deal with something that guaranteed to break.

Just goes to show that Microsoft has customer service way beyond most other companies.

Don't forget what they did when they after a couple of months after launch slashed the price of Xbox 1 considerably - everyone that sent them a receipt showing that they had payed the launch price got *2 games of their choice AND an extra controller* delivered for free directly to their mailbox. The retail value of an extra controller and 2 full-price games was way more than the price cut btw.

So; MS does indeed take care of its customers.

PS: My launch console still works flawlessly after more than 1,5 years of almost daily use ;)

When they were finally about to make a profit...

Either way, MS is really trying to apologize because 1 billion was the reason to why they would have only had 256mb of RAM in the 360, which IMHO wouldve killed the system in its first year.

I call bullsh*t. You're either lying,or broken minded. You heard the news they were going to COVER repairs for an addition two years beyond the warranty, and THAT managed to convince you not to buy an XBOX 360?

Red lights of death are not a new topic, though I've never had a problem and consider it to be blown somewhat out of proportion. My opinion aside though, if you're a level 24 poster, you HAD to have heard about this issue. So... Microsofts's ACKNOWLEDGEMENT of the perceived problem and attempt at improving customer relations beyond what was required has convinced you to go with a PS3? Are you serious?

i read many complain and news related with xbox 360 hardware failure from many different site. this is definitely nothing a new thing to me.

think about it for a second, would you want to buy a console that have a high chances of failure and wasting more money and time to return it?

ps3 and xbox 360 both have same performance. the only difference is the game, since some game that i like are on ps3 including MGS4, tekken series, tell me why not buy a ps3?

you do know your statement is contradicting as the 360s are still going to break. they only extended the warranty.

jeez people use your heads 1 billion dollars to MS is like 100 bucks to the rest of us, this isn't gonna hurt them, at least their owning up and ponying up, and for those that keep saying your not getting a 360 now you never were save the flamebait, the problem is fixed now so what, sony still loses

[T]he new warranty would not impact the Xbox division's plan to turn a profit in fiscal 2008

Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division

"f you're a long-term [share]holder, I don't think it's going to have that great an impact."Kim Caughey, senior analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group

Clearly, this news doesn't have Microsoft's executives or independent fund managers very worried, which means that it's not a very big deal for Microsoft's bottom line. Of course, 360 opponents will try to spin this news every which way to make it seem like the end of the 360.

*YAWN*

Well, given that you've waited this long, the odds of your gettinga defective system is significantly lower than someone who bought the hardware just a few months ago. Microsoft is moving forward with better equipped heat dissipation options in future releases of the 360 console, so your worries are being addressed. Of course, if you prefer to buy a PS3 because of reliability worries despite this, you're entitled to spend your money how you'd like. I'm just saying that you should be fully aware of the story and all the plusses and minusses to both systems before you drop some money on a new console, especially if the money spent will be a significant investment for you.

Anybody have any idea what the implications of this will be?

-Halo 3 was supposed to put Microsoft's gaming division into the black. Is that still going to happen?

-There were rumors that the Xbox 360 would get a price cut right alongside the PS3. Is Microsoft still willing to drop the price when they have such a high cost for reparing systems?
