Poll Xbox versus Gamecube (98 votes)

Xbox 48%
Gamecube 52%
No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

That generation may have been dominated by the PS2, but both the Xbox and the Gamecube were incredible consoles too- they both provided better versions of the multiplats that the PS2 already had, and they each had some amazing exclusive games with a distinct, unique flavor that simply hasn't been replicated since. Which of them, however, do you think was better? Below I have listed some of the best games that you could play on each system that you could not play on the other, at least at the time. Which lineup was better? You decide!

XBOX: Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Fable, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue II, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Conker: Line n Reloaded, Ninja Gaiden Black, Project Gotham Racing, Forza Motorsport, The Chronicles of Riddick, Crimson Skies, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Star Wars: Battlefront, Star Wars Battlefront II

GAMECUBE: Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Star Fox Adventure, Star Fox Assault, F-Zero GX, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil, Viewtiful Joe, Viewtiful Joe 2, Killer7, Tales of Symphonia, Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Sonic Adventure 2, Skies of Arcadia, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, Pikmin, Pikmin 2, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart Double Dash, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Phantasy Star Online, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Ikagura

Okay, so I missed these games for the Gamecube:

Luigi's Mansion, Baten Kaitos, Baten Kaitos Origins, Resident Evil 0

Btw, both those lists above may be missing some games- generally, those were honest omissions, and I would gladly add them back in if someone can point out what I forgot.

Gamecube may not have had any of the GTAs or much Fifa. Or the shooter craze that was around Halo and Killzone.

Or cool series on PS2 like SOCOM or SWKOTOR on Xbox. But it had a bunch of other great games, games that not many people experienced (stuff like Eternal Darkness, Star Fox, Viewtiful Joe).

I also love Super Mario Sunshine, that game is so great, you just get a smile on your face playing that game.

The GameCube is my favourite console of all time, and I greatly prefer its library over Xbox's.

Maybe add Baten Kaitos to the GC library? Haven't played it myself, but people said it was good.

I own a GC but I've never owned OG Xbox. I'd say the GC had a couple of outstanding 1st party exclusives but the OG Xbox had more 3rd party support and had several key PC-shared titles. In the long run, those exclusives might make GC seem more special but actually the OG Xbox might be the better console on the whole.

Nope, they read GC discs. No need to modify.

You can put Gamecube discs into a Wii regularly to play those games on it

@charizard1605: resident evil 0 worth adding into gamecube list.

Gamecube was my favorite console of the generation, loved all the resident evil releases, resident evil remake is one of my favorite games of all time.

I loved windwaker, eternal darkness and metroid prime games.

The two pokemon games were decent enough as well.

Also the gamecube controller despite looking odd, was very comfortable.

Xbox won hands down. It had great 1st party, a lot more 3rd party as well. They brought over great games from the PC and had your Fifas, Pro Evo, GTAs. Games the GC couldn't do in its dreams because of hardware and storage limitations. Also a games that still stand up today in Ninja Gaiden Black and Halo CE. Also had playable versions of Capcom Vs SNK 2, one of the best fights which was shit on the GameCube because of the horrible controller, you could get specialised controllers on the Xbox. Played your music in games, everything ran in 60Hz in the UK something Nintendo still hadn't done on the Wii, with some games failing that.

Exclusives versus exclusives just don't cut it.

Also had XBL.

I was a sheep at the beginning. I only got an Xbox because of how boring the Game Cube was. I tried hard with the GC, I have loads of games on that, same with the Wii.

It wasn't close at all.

Exactly. I was such a Nintendo fanboy until the Game Cube. I felt the games lacked the Nintendo magic that the NES, SNES and N64 games had. Like they lacked depth. I think Nintendo made them pick up and play, because they thought that's what made the Playstation popular. I don't think I've sat down for more than half an hour forty five minutes at a time with Game Cube games apart from maybe Eternal Darkness and a couple of others.

My crystal ball says the cows vote Game Cube.

never owned a GameCube in its time, though as soon as I got my hands on a Wii I played catch-up, I think an Xbox was more rounded as having those main multiplatform titles, GameCube still had good third party support too, but damn their exclusive line-up was reason enough to have one for sure

I prefer the gamecube library, even though it didn't have quite the same "Nintendo Magic" as previous consoles, like when playing Super Mario World or SM64 for the first time.

Also Metal Gear Solid 3 was never released for the original xbox as said in the op.

Yes, it is quite good. And don't forget the prequel, Batien Kaitos: Origins, which I like even better. It's my favorite game from Monolith Soft.

I ended up getting both of these consoles when they launch on the same week. Xbox One had Halo: Combat Evolve that revolutionize FPS games on consoles. Gamecube had 2 games that I got at launch, Luigi's Mansion and Star Wars: Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2 and Rouge Leader was my most played game.

Gamecube had cool games, but Gamecube hardware itself lack of DVD player, no CD player, and no online gameplay. Xbox had good quality of exclusive games, had DVD player but only works if you'll buy remote to operate it, had CD player, and it was the console that started online gaming.

The winner is: Xbox. But bare in mind that I enjoy both consoles back then but if I really got to pick one of them, it's the Xbox cause it did a lot of things that Gamecube and PS2 didn't.

As an owner of both consoles back then:

GameCube had the best multiplayer games of that generation, with games like Smash Bros Melee, Monkey Ball and Mario Kart Double Dash providing endless hours of fun multiplayer gameplay. It was also a great console for survival horror, with all of the Resident Evil games from 0 to 4, along with the cult classic Eternal Darkness. It also had the best side-scroller (Viewtiful Joe), the best 3D platformers (Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Monkey Ball, Prince of Persia, Mario Sunshine), and the best console strategy games (Pikmin, Fire Emblem), along with some great JRPGs (Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia), action-adventures (Zelda Collector's Edition, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess), fighting games (Smash Bros Melee, Soul Calibur 2), stealth game (MGS Twin Snakes) and MMO (Phantasy Star Online), and the best version of the overall game of the generation (Resident Evil 4).

Xbox had the best FPS of that generation, including Halo 1 & 2 and Half-Life 2 (although it paled in comparison to the PC version), the best WRPGs (KOTOR, Morrowind, Fable, Jade Empire), and arguably the best hack & slash (Ninja Gaiden). It also had some great 3D fighting games (Dead or Alive 1-3, Soul Calibur 2) and stealth games (MGS2, Splinter Cell), action-adventure (Shenmue II), and platformer (Prince of Persia). It also had the best online multiplayer (though it wasn't as much fun as the GameCube's offline multiplayer experiences) and the best multimedia features (which I used a lot).

Overall, the GameCube gets my vote.

Xbox. I bought one at launch and was part of the Xbox Live beta and it was the best console experience I've ever had. You had to be playing it back in the day to truly appreciate how great that console was, a lot of its best games eventually got ported over to the PC and the live service was shutdown.

Otogi 1 & 2

Panza Dragoon: Orta

Crimson Skies

Blinx 1 & 2

Phantom Dust

Metal Wolf Chaos

Quantum Redshift

Kung Fu Chaos

Dead or Alive 3

Jet Set Radio Future

Gunvalkyrie

Kingdom Under Fire: Crusaders & Heroes

Outrun 2

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes

MechAssault 1 & 2

Unreal Championship 2

Metal Dungeon

Shin Megami Tensei: Nine

Crimson Sea

Voodoo Vince

Sega GT 2002/Online

Phantom Crash

Steel Battalion

Raze's Hell

Amped 1 & 2

Fuzion Frenzy

Brute Force

Breakdown

Top Spin

Ninja Gaiden: Black

Links: 2004

PGR 1 & 2

These are my favourite Xbox exclusives.

Also, the Xbox is still the best console for modding. I have a 1TB HDD and XBMC with tons of emulators.

@funkmaster1233:

That last sentence, yes indeed, I've got thousands of classics on that baby. :D

The other thing rarely brought up is that there were some games way back then running at 720P and the Wii comes out in 2006 and best it could muster was 480P.

I'm a GameCube man. Wind Waker, RE4, Metroid Prime, and MK DD provided some awesome memories. Even got Zelda TP at end. Love the form-factor of the Wavebird. Sad they never offered rumble support.

Xbox was cool with Halo of course. Old controllers were a bane and having to buy the DVD remote was shameless. Ninja Gaiden and Kung Fu Chaos were some awesome games and the built-in HDD and LIVE really helped usher in the modern console era.

Both kotors were console exclusive to xbox.

I voted xbox....

I waited in line day 1 as I had for every other Nintendo console and happily backed Nintendo out of the gate... I was a sheep. Xbox was bulky and weird.

I played rogue squadron, and Luigi mansion and eternal darkness and resident evil and smash bro. (I truly do not get the appeal of that franchise)

A year or more into the console I realized I just had no faith Nintendo would be bringing big third party games and their new ip wasn't very inspiring to me. . I don't care how much someone tells me pikmin and animal crossing are... I'm just not interested.

Went to friends and saw the xbox...

Sold the GameCube the next weekend and went full xbox. Exclusive Bioware support, halo ce (the only halo I enjoyed), Splinter cell... Shit even mgs2 was on Xbox... GameCube was the first sign that I no longer fell in line with the Nintendo model. I hope they bring me back with NX.

The Gamecube doesn't have many games that i enjoyed enough to finish, wile the OG Xbox has Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, the Otogi games, Outrun 2 and Ninja Gaiden Black. I'll go with the OG Xbox.

I owned both upon launch, but admittedly didnt log many hours with either as I was primarily a PC gamer at the time.

Between the two I definitely logged more hours on the Xbox. As well, being in my early 20s at the time, the GC library appealed to me less. Didnt care for Sunshine, and never been a big fan of 3D Zelda or Metroid. Mario Kart was fun, though.

I still have both systems and I would go with Gamecube.

The controller was better than the fat Xbox controller.

Metroid Prime > Halo imo.

Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros Melee, Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil 4 & 0 made me believe Nintendo could still stand with the big boys in the console wars.

Before putting in that GC disc be shure your Wii is compatible ( pre 2011 ), btw, you do need a GC controller and a GC memory card for saves.

Definitely Xbox, it had the games and genres I was more interested in. Halo CE was what really blew me away. The internal HDD and music ripper were also key factors in terms of value for my buck. And the high quality controllers, online integration, exclusives and superior mulitplats were a no brainer for me.

Not to say the GC was any less. The launch lineup was pretty amazing in my opinion, some of the best graphics for launches I've ever scene. RS2 was what sold me. But it was my secondary console at the time.
