On Xbox One, games are just games. Whether it's a downloadable retail game or what would formally be known as a Live Arcade game, they're all the same in the Xbox Live Game Store. One consequence of that decision is that there is no demo requirement for games on Xbox One.

"Not all games will have demos like Xbox Live arcade games have had on Xbox 360," Microsoft's Marc Whitten said.

Microsoft's new policy matches the one PlayStation has had for the entirety of PS3. That decision has sometimes been criticized, as games would less frequently offer demos on PlayStation Network. "That said, we are going to work on lots of ways to make it easy for you to find and try new games on the service," he told IGN (via OXM).

Retail games will also be offered digitally on Xbox One. However, unlike Steam, games cannot be preloaded before release. "Not at launch, but you'll see us do this and much more over the life of the program," Whitten pointed out. You will be able to play games as they download, however.

Not a big deal. Though I wonder just how hard "trial periods" on full downloads would be. Get the effect of the demo, same file.

That's pretty lame. There's no excuse to not have a demo nowadays.

Well that's dumb.

It was something I wish Sony would've done with the PS3.

Good idea cuz I've read numerous articles that say that games with demos sell quite a bit worse than games without them.

Then stop making games that are crap, and players will be enticed to buy them after playing the demo.

Its probably too much to ask of devs to make demos mandatory. Especially since all XOne games are in the same store, do how would you decide which games require demos and which don't. Demos for AAA games can be very costly.

This is stupid. Sticking small and indie games next to massive blockbusters in the same store. Dumb dumb dumb. The XBL Arcade was one of the absolute best things about the 360. So naturally they are tossing it in the bin for this "next gen console". Ugh. I don't get any of their decisions.

I liked having the demo for every XBLA game. That way I got to try the game before I buy it and not waste money on a poorly made game. These Indie developers would be smart to keep the demo in place, as I won't just pay for a game because it got good ratings or looks interesting. If there's no trial for it, I'll most likely skip it and use my money on games I've demoed or know for sure that it's great. I never understood why PS3 didn't have demos for all their PSN games. I've only purchased a few titles on PSN.
