"The patent shows a "console" (presumably an XBox 360 or a next-gen XBox) being the central hub of the network, communicating with dozens of handheld devices. What's interesting is that Microsoft doesn't restrict what these devices are, and lists handheld gaming devices, mobile phones, PDAs and PMPs as possibilities."

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft all have teams thinking up the next gen console.

Sony and MS both started working on their next consoles before the PS3 and 360 were even on the market.  It's just how the industry works.  Intel is working on new chip designs and projecting/mapping changes out at least through the next 10 years.  All hardware is like that.

Apple made patents back in the 90's that they have yet to impliment into their product line. So, people apply for patents all the time.

 

It is a good way to look at where the industry MAY go.

This happens. There are teams working on ideas for the 360, PS3, and Wii2.
