I have now an I3 4170 and a gtx 970. It's my internet pc and I crammed a new psu and a gtx 970 in it for vr. It works quite well in vr , but I cannot get 60 fps on the witcher 3, not steady anyway, not even on the lowest quality settings and 900p.

I'm actually on the fence now of buying an I5 4460 because I can get a lot of free games with it for my vr setup. The I5 4460 is on the same level as the i5 2500 but I really doubt I'm going to get a steady 60 fps with it. I once ran the witcher 3 with an I5 2500 and a gtx 950 on the lowest settings and I couldn't get 60 fps either.

I heard the witcher 3 runs at 60 fps unpatched now on the xboxone x, it drops too but cd project red might tweak it to have a 60 fps option. I can wait but I don't know how long those deals will last with the free games and it's a lot of free games. Arizona sunshine, killing floor 2, star trek bridge crew and warhammer vermintide.

I don't get any free games with other haswell cpu's but I can get them with all kaby lake and skylake cpu's apart from the I7 7700(k) and I7 6700 (k). I can also get it with the I7 6800k, and I7 7800x.

Or I can just buy the xboxone x, the perk I would have with the xboxone x is that I don't have to move my gaming pc from my vr room to my mancave everytime I want to play single player (non vr) games.

The GTX 970 is your problem. Upgrading your CPU won’t have a huge impact.

gtx 970 isn't enough to run witcher 3 at lowest settings and 900p? I have to be honest I think the framerates with I5 2500 and gtx 950 weren't that much worse, and there's a huge difference between the gtx 970 and gtx 950.

@goldenelementxl: lol no. I have one of the cheapest 970s on the market and it runs TW3 in 1080p Ultra (except a few thing like foliage render distance at High) near locked 60fps.

His problem is 100% that CPU

many I7's are at a sweet spot with cost right now. That said (and im not sure if this is what you're getting at) i think I5's are actually better than I7s. i don't know wha tit is, but i generally have a better, easier experience with gaming on I5s.

Id upgrade the PC my man.

Uh, i mean... it really depends on the game.

There are quite a few games that are CPU heavy games, GTA 5 comes to mind. Im not sure about the Witcher 3, but if i had to guess he'd have no problems if he had a better CPU. Right now he's running a dual core system.... when's the last time you did that? 2008? They're great CPUs, but just not for modern gaming.

Upgrading his CPU would definitely improve his situation. Cheap GPU or not, it would help. the GPU is also an issue if he plans on doing some ultra settings 1080/4k with new releases, but it shouldnt be terrible if the CPU is also up to date. If he puts an I5 or I7 with that card he should have no major issues running at the highest settings.

EDIT: Didnt see that xantufrog clarified the CPU issue.

@xantufrog said:

Of course it is, its a freaking dual core!

The last time i gamed on a dual core i put my 750 in it, ran GTA5, saw it ran like shit and then realized... opps, wrong PC. I meant to put it in my I7, not in my I3.

Here, you wanna figure out what your issue is, use Rivatuner or whatever monitoring software you want and watch your CPU and GPU usage when your frames drop

I would go with the Xbox One X for one main reason, you won't have to move your PC from your VR room to your mancave. I can imagine what a pain that must be. You really have to want to play a game to do that.

I also think it would be a good idea to upgrade the CPU, especially if you like those free games on offer. Ultimately, I think the best setup for you would be the X1X in your mancave and the PC with the upgraded CPU in your VR room.

The upgrade I would do first would be the X1X because it would give you the best immediate benefit of not having to move a system to another room every time you want to play a single player non vr game. Later you can upgrade your CPU if it's not financially feasible to do both now.

Lol, I guess I didn’t know there was a dual core haswell chip. I haven’t purchased anything less than a quad core for the last 10 years, or an octo-core the past few.

Yeah, TC needs a CPU and GPU. That makes the choice tougher. If the budget is $500, an Xbox One X deserves a look.

Do you think I should upgrade the pc, or buy a new mobo and ram alltogether, the plus is that I can use the I3 still then as my internet pc.

There's also the subject of the free games. All I5's from skylake and kabylake gives me free games, with haswell only the I5 4460. The I5 7600k is 220 bucks. the I5 4460 180. the I5 4690 is 250 bucks (with no free games).

The i7 4790 is about the same price as the I7's from kaby and skylake, a bit above 300 (apart from the coffee lake chip then). The I7 7800x and I7 6800k are also in that price range.

The I5 8600k is 290 but I have to buy a more expensive motherboard. The I5 8400 is sold out everywhere.

Yah I3's are good processors, just not for modern gaming. I still have a couple dual cores set up and use them regularly.

But you definitely want to upgrade the whole system and personally id go with the i5 8600k. There's no such thing as future proof, but youll be rocking that for the entire lifespan of the xb1x and probably into their next system and it will still probably preform better. If you decide to overclock it to 5ghz (i think those go to 5), get a water cooling system, if not just get a nice heat sink.

As for free games, you have the internet.... you have access to free games.

If you're not going to go top of the line pc parts, then just buy an X1X, it will end up far cheaper than upgrading your pc (cpu and graphics card) and run games better than a medium build pc, which from the looks of it is all you can afford.

Upgrading your PC is always the better option. Consoles are only useful if you want access to some exclusives. Also, TW3 does not run at 60fps on X1X as it struggles to hold the frame rate.

Actually the i3 is a bit better: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7600K-vs-Intel-Core-i3-8350K/3885vs3935

Personally I'm a fan of Gen 8. My i7 8700k runs boosted between 3.7 and 4.7 Ghz, it is awesome.

I wouldn't say that's down to your GPU.

I had a GTX970 and it could run The Witcher 3 flawlessly at 1080/60

So that is probably down to your CPU and RAM.

*Caring about 60fps

OR

*Buying an Xbox one X

PICK ONE!

lol seriously.

Xbox one X will ultimately give you a better overall output than your current set up but if you care about 60 frames per second and single player games then this is a no brainer for the PC.

I have now an I3 4170 and a gtx 970. It's my internet pc and I crammed a new psu and a gtx 970 in it for vr. It works quite well in vr , but I cannot get 60 fps on the witcher 3, not steady anyway, not even on the lowest quality settings and 900p.

I wouldn't say that's down to your GPU.

I had a GTX970 and it could run The Witcher 3 flawlessly at 1080/60

So that is probably down to your CPU and RAM.

What cpu did you use it with.

What TV/monitor do you have/plan getting.

I have a 1080p tv and I'm not planning to upgrade it anytime soon.

I was playing in 4k with 2 970s in SLI (back when 4k was new, I was an early adopter ... sadly xD).

I'm pretty sure you are fine with the GPU in 1080p. Sure you can't max all games and expect 60FPS, but it's not the reason your PC is slow.

Either an I5 or an I7

And 16GBs of RAM.

Some areas, like Novigrad, I heard are very CPU intensive.

a lot of I5's man, and a lot of different ones, would you settle for the I5 4460 for 900p?

You seem to awfully love the Xbox One X and think PC's are too complicated. You can sell off your OG Xbox for 150$, put that money towards an Xbox One X and effectively get it for 350$. Not to mention you'll have one dedicated gaming machine instead of switching back and forth between two. Xbox One X is the obvious choice here.

why would I think pc's are too complicated? I worked in the industry for more than a decade.

Some of you guys really take this board way too seriously.

Then you find consoles more convenient. Whatever the case the Xbox One X seems far more suitable for you. The upgrade is gonna be way cheaper and you'll have one dedicated gaming machine. It's a bit of a waste because of the 1080p TV but what can you do?

my point being if you're trying to upgrade you shouldn't be aiming at lower than your native resolution

@commander: why do you want that particular i5? And why settle for 900p? Your gtx970 with a decent cpu will run anything in native 1080p

BTW, I have a 6500 (1151 socket), and it's a good cpu and Novigrad definitely doesn't bring it to its knees

Yeah I find them more convenient for fifa , hang out with my friends in parties. But I use a pc for vr, and I want to play the witcher 3 in 60 fps.

Most of the time I always have some sort of gaming pc in my life, all depending what era and what I needed at the time. gaming. There were only 3 periods in my life I didn't have one and that is

2014-2017 (allthough I did have a gtx 950 last year, and a 750ti in 2015).

2007-2010 because of the x360 and got a pc again in 2010 because games were getting to ugly on the x360.

1995-1998 because of the downfall of amiga, bought a pc for unreal .

had my first pc commodore 64 in 1987

what gpu do you have?

I want the I5 4460 because of the free games, and my mobo is now haswell. The mobo also works well with my rift and another one could give me problems.

It's also only 180 euros, and I get star trek bridge crew, arizona sunshine, killing floor 2 and warhammer vermintide.

But I'm affraid it won't give me 60 fps steady in TW3

@commander: like I said above, I have a cheapo gtx970. It will run tw3 at 60fps in 1080p. Just dont turn hairworks on and set a few unnecessary things to high instead of ultra - such as foliage distance

at the moment it doesn't matter what i change , I get the same crappy fps. the I5 6500 is about 10 percent faster than that I5 4460 though, just like my i3 4170 lol, so I will lose single core speed if I do that. I might just get the 4590 then second handed which would be about the same. I won't get the free games though then , oh well.

It's no wonder you dislike PC gaming. You always cheap out on the components.

that made me lol,

But whoever said I disliked pc gaming, I like pc gaming.

You're right I always cheap out on the components though, there's just something nice about finding that hidden gem of cpu/gpu that is overpowered for its price.
