[QUOTE="JPOBS"][QUOTE="blahzor"][QUOTE="JPOBS"][QUOTE="blahzor"] Bioshock is good, but it seems to be severly overrated. I can't help but think people are buying into the games atmosphere too much.. I honestly think mario galaxy deserves the GOTY award much more. If only for the reason to show that the game industry can produce brilliant stuff that doesn't involve the use of big-gorey guns
plus, mario galaxy had a much better original soundtrack. In fact, i can't think of anything memorable about Bioshocks soundtrack. It had some stuff that added to the atmosphere, which were mainly existing pieces taken from that era.

Im sure mario galaxy will win GOTY at a whole slew of other places so keep your pants on.As for the highlighted part of your post, other than 2006 (gears of war) a shooter hasnt won GOTY (at gamespot) since atleast 2000 (im not sure who won what further back than 2001) so i dont get your point.
Recent times people believe these are some of the only good games. People, and i refer mostly to people who don't know much about games(that even goes for some here i would imagine :)), will bash games like mario galaxy simply because they look "teh kiddy".. so, for mainstream outlets to give it a nod over something like bioshock is a positive. I always thought Xplay was mainstream, is it not? I don't really pay attention to all of these outlets.
Mario games and similar used to be huge years ago.. people don't care anymore(let me rephrase, there are more people who seem not to.. obviously, alot of wii owners love it). I'm not talking about the devoted gamers, we all know zack and wiki is awesome, for instance.
Hah, you also seem to think that i was offended by xplay.. i was not. Just commenting is all.
the reason why mario was so huge years ago and why no one seems to care anymore (or more people seem not too) id because mario was huge at a point in gaming's life cycle when there wasnt much else to choose from .What i mean to say is, back in the day, everyone had a NES and SNES. The gaming industry was small. Fastforward 15 year, and the industry has exploded, and in total, you've got 360, ps3, wii, ds, psp, and PC markets. Thats a lot of division among gamers. consider that most casuals only buy one console.
So its simply a matter of the market being much more divided than it was when mario was in his hay day. I dont think its a big deal, galaxy will rake in GOTY awards this year (im expecting it at gs as well).
Yeah its as silly as wondering why kids dont play ball in the cup, or why they don't make silent films anymore. Times change. People change. Nostalgia is nice but man...if you wanna sound like an old fart..complain that the kids aren't into what you were once into.
"In my day mario fought bowser and your princess was in another castle. None of this silly covenant aliens and modern wars business."
This implies mario is no longer relevant; or at least not excellent as games today. BUt he is; mario galaxy is an amazing game, even compared to bioshock. I'm not saying mario should be doing well because he once did.. i'm saying he should be doing well because he's gaming bliss right now. And good games flying under the radar should not be something that we are fine with.
Mario Galaxy is one of the best games released this decade. It deserves to be recognised and not ridiculed. I realize the industry has grown, and there are more outlets to get your gaming fix.. but i still believe great games deserve recognition. Mario galaxy did fairly well, but there is still a large percentage of the video game pop that dismisses it. It's a question of whether mario galaxy deserves it or not; and it certainly doesn't deserve to be dismissed. Do you deny that shooters this year are the popular thing? And that a large portion of these people are dismissing galaxy? That was my point; and thats one of the reasons it would be nice to see galaxy win at mainstream outlets.. because it's also fully deserving, as its top of the line quality.
