remember when everyone was laughing about the name "Wii"? well at least Wii was catchy and cute. Xbox 8 is as dull as any name could get.

i really liked Sega's, though. and Nintendo obviously took the cue from Sega.

back then it was the standard NES, SNES. then SEGA came up with Mega Drive/Genesis. so Ninty followed it up with the GameCube, then Sega got the Saturn, 32X, CD, DreamCast and now the Wii.

Disappointed with the Wii U name, though. and i really like how most Ninty exclusive games have the console names in them like Mario 64 or Mario Bros. Wii.

Playstation is the exception to the rule, though. just because the name "Playstation" got swag writtern all over it. it has inspiration, "the power of a workstation for play"

i mean, from what inspiration does a dull "Xbox" name have? oh, it's a square therefore we called it a box, and then we put the letter "X" because of the edginess to it, because we-re like the x-factor. lulz. (okay, i know where it came from, but still deriving it from DirectX is stupid enough.)

I don't think some people here understand the reason for MS's seemingly strange approach on the names for it's consoles.

It's because MS didn't get into the console biz until the PS2 gen.

"Xbox" worked fine for MS's first console, but MS couldn't have named the 360 "Xbox 2" in the same gen as the PS3 if they wanted to sell their consoles. lol

Think about it. Imagine you're a parent with NO knowledge about video games, and you're about to make a purchase for your child or something. Which one would you buy? Xbox 2, or Playstation 3? You'd more than likely pick the ps3, because people associate higher numbers with "new" or "better."
