Articles like this are not hard to come by, and a lot of people like me can't help but wonder just how much money Sony will have to lose on the Playstation 3 and the company as a whole before they start realizing it's just easier and more financially feasible for them to just abandon console manufacturing and make games, much like Sega did.

Before you know it they'll be following Circuit City into bankruptcy.

Have Microsoft made any money on their xbox franchise yet?

I know it sells well but between warranties and them throwing money left and right for exclusives, I'm not really sure they have seen an actual profit overall.

"and the console happens to be selling less than any currently produced console (including the PS2) nearly every month on end,"

I stopped reading right there.

I have the w910i. It looks great, fells solid, screens pretty good, and most of all, with my headpohones my music sounds brilliant, as good as any mp3 player, the USB cable is brilliantly fast for transferring files, the motion sensing is good for photos and music, the buttons for texting are great too. And its the phone make to get, just about everyone I know has an erricson. Its in, thats it.

And Ive never had a problem with one :)

http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/0,39030107,49293794,00.htm

Though i got it for £100, not £250, though its been out a little while.

If its amazing how 360 is selling then its even more amazing how PS3 is selling. PS3 sales rates > 360 sales rates.

Not really, i had a w810i which was a cracker phone, never gave me any problems. It was durable, felt well built and had a great camera with a load of awesome features. Then when i got my new contract, i got the k850i which feels cheap and flimsy, it constantly just turns off on me for no reason, the camera button has broken on my twice and once the phone just died and wouldnt turn on. Luckily its still in warranty. My mate has the c902 and he's getting the same problems.

read the article, its freakin halarious. In the midst of making several valid points, I read this:

"Everyone who wants HD movie playback will have to get a Blu-Ray player, eventually. So why has Sony not used the PS3 to leverage sales from the consumer electronics market?"

ROFL! forget marketing the PS3 for gamers, just sell it as a stand alone blu-ray player, that'll help Sony out of the hole!

funny article guys.

The thing is, the Xbox's time has mostly past. There are almost no AAA titles coming (except for ones that are on PC as well, like Alan Wake), and Sony has the better hardware to accomodate a next-gen evolution.

Plus, the PS3 has Home and Killzone 2.

Resisting Sony is futile. They make the most top quality hardware out there, they just struggled with software this generation, whereas Microsoft with years of game development on the PC behind them pushed software more and struggled on the hardware. Software beats hardware any day, but it doesn't hurt to have the latest Playstation and the newest format.

Yes, I knew this would happen. All fanboys just earned themselves a doctorite in economics and are beginning to spout this stuff. It is undeniable, yes Sony has lost a proverbial F-Ton on the PS3. It is what happens with the sum of bad decisions mixed in with good ones. It isn't all bad, and alot of the success that the PS3 is receiving now is a result of that.

Big name publishers like EA and Activision are making more Next-Gen sales money on the PS3 worldwide than any other console, that is FACT. Even Sony started turning *some* profit on a worldwide scale off the PS3 (these results were released at a conference this weekend in Europe). So to say it is all bad and that they should stop making consoles and retire to just making games is like telling MS to stop making operating systems and just keep making office and networking software.

Oh thats right. In the world of fanboys, double standards run rampant. In that case, how about we look at a few other facts. MS lost a little over 6 BILLION(!!!!!!!) DOLLARS in Windows Vista. You read that right folks, this report was filed last month, and if you were to read it you'd think why would they try to ever make an OS that isn't XP again. What is worse is that loss wasn't just because people didn't buy Vista, but there was a huge number of people buying Apple PC's and laptops. But next summer we will be getting the fantastic working (and looking) Windows 7, which will hopefully recoup MS' operating system's division.

My point that i'm making is that the best companies in the world who manufacture the products we use daily are all founded financial risk decisions, there are no safe bets in the business world. MS lost a ton on the original Xbox, it didn't stop them from making a new one. Gamecube was a console flop, didn't stop Nintendo either.

Honestly fanboys, stop caring about the future of these consoles you hate so much. Why does it affect you? You have no intention of buying their products or playing their games. Yet now, you want Sony to turn into a 3rd party game developer. If you don't wanna buy their system to play their games, now you just wanna play their games on your system of choice. It isn't like the two consoles are that different outside of their respective online networks. Just go out and pick up another console if you wanna play their games that badly.

You're forgetting the other major shot in the foot that Sony did, back when the PS3 first launched and people were crying for months for a price drop, and Sony instead of complying to customer specific request and dropping the price on the current system, To save on manufacturing cost's so they can lower the price, they revise the PS3 hardware, remove all the great components like the PS2 chipset, SD and Flash slots, take away 2 usb ports, put in a Single slot loader instead of the Dual grab loader and then discontinue the 60 GIG model which has since become known as the best built, most sought after version of all PS3's. In fact most people today like myself won't even consider buying any other model besides the 60 GIG model, i actually did try one of their newer 80 GIG models not too long ago and it had power up problems from the first time i turned it on, so i i took it back the same day and exchanged it for another one and half an hour into a Tiger Woods golf game the screen went black and it didn't read any disc's from then on, so i returned it and bought my 360 Elite and promised my self no more PS3's unless Sony resurrects the 60 GIG model. The refusal of Sony lowering the price of the original 60 GIG model and instead manufacturing cheaper, poorly made models such as the 40, 80, and soon to be 160 GIG, which are all the 40 GIG models with larger hard drives any way, has ended up costing Sony more money than they ever would have lost if they had just lowered the price of the original 60 GIG model. Now there suffering losses with hardware returns, exchanges and trades, so now they do not only have the more inferior game library, but hardware as well.

4 out of the last 5 quarters have been profitable. But the net result for the franchise as a whole is still -$7billion.

I find that very hard to believe that 2 brand new ps3's just didnt work. The xbox elite you bought will probably break in a year and we will hear another sob story about it. Sony's hardware is 10x better then the 360 and yet you say you bought 2 and they both broke? If you want a 60 gig go on ebay or Criegs list it is your fault you waited until now and if i were sony i wouldnt care." Early bird gets the worm".

sony is fine, when you make consoles you sell for a loss we all know this, heck microsoft finally turned a profit this year in the gaming division since the early 2000's however we dont know if its the console itself, maybe not since the RROD deal

These are the things that fan boys turn a blind eye to. I never seen so many people at one time that just want a company to fail for no valid reason. Sony had 2 successful gaming generations where the PS1 was supported for 11 yrs and the PS2 is going into it's 9th. Now that they have entered this gen on a bad start, everyone wants Sony to give up making consoles. It seems like if one fan boy is dissatisfied with a product the whole fan boy community has to be as well. Both console offer a good experience to those who seeks it.

Last I remember Ms' entertainment division has yet to make a profit. If any company should abandon thier consol it should be ms with their xbox1.5. MS should just stick to making windows.

Why would Sony abandon making consoles... The PS2 is the best selling console of all time & I'm assuming was high profitable for them. PS3 isn't dead, and will pick up over time...

Have Microsoft made any money on their xbox franchise yet?

I know it sells well but between warranties and them throwing money left and right for exclusives, I'm not really sure they have seen an actual profit overall.

Microsoft can afford to lose billions, Sony cannot.

right, right because its acceptable to start a new business venture into gaming and loose billions and miss making any kind of profit because "they can afford to". LOL. this thread is self-ownage on the tc's part. lol

i agree to the above post...and yeah the TC doesn't realize that sony's gaming division is the main source of profit...they've been getting more and more profits this year, so for sony...2008 was the year for THEM...and to compare it to circuit city is just ignorant and naive...the gaming division isn't sony's only source of profit...i hope to God sony never abandons the gaming market...same with nintendo and MS...these three game companies know how good the industry's becoming...

Why is it so hard to believe ?, the only flawless model of the PS3 is the 60 GIG, the flawed model was the 40 GIG, which is of course what the 80 GIG is , but just has the larger hard drive, plus i didn't even mention when i did return those 2 defective PS3's the gamestop guy's had 4 more defects behind the counter waiting to be shipped back to Sony claiming their most recent shipment was bad. As for my 360 Elite, it was manufactured in 2008, so i highly doubt it will go Red Ring, it's possible, i've had 2 360's before this from 2005 and 2006 that went RROD on me, but supposedly the latest models have a larger heat sync and an updated chipset that runs cooler, but yeah it could still happen, but so far so good, and i've played it for as much as 6 hour's straight. Sony's crowning achievement is their 60 GIG model period, it had the most bang for the buck and was as durable as a tank, and they discontinued it and started putting out a stripped down, glitchy , faulty piece of hardware, that at this rate is no better quality than a RROD 360. Whether you want to admit it or not makes no difference facts are facts, here in the forums, articles in the papers and all over the internet have made it clear, just as they did when the 360 RROD's we're running rabid, but this time Sony boys don't want to hear it, they still want to convince them selves that they have the most reliable hardware on the market and as of today it's no longer true.

Right now sony may be getting an ass kicking, though if they get a good price drop, and start hyping games more like MS, and by that i mean even make a drink for their games (mountain dew anyone) they will do well.

To what end? MS has still lost ~$7 billion, there is no way they can pay back that debt in one generation let alone what is left of this one. Console gamers are very fickle, MS can't lock gamers into the Xbox franchise at thoroughly as they can with Windows and Office. Even if they come out #1 this gen everything resets at the beginning of the next generation. History has shown us that there is absolutely no guarantee that success will transcend generations. As often as not the torch for #1 console is passed between companies each generation.

lol @ u. 40 gig ps3 is a billion times more reliable than any 360. Sorry but epic fail.

The only thing the PS3 40 GIG has over 360 is a blu-ray player, thats all, thats it, it doesn't even have a hard drive as big as either 360 on the market, 360 pro 60 gig HD, 360 Elite 120 GIG HD, plus both 360 models listed here come with HD component and HDMI cables and a wired headset. As far as reliability goes the old RROD thing is not too valid with 2008 model 360's, so that card is played out already, 40 and 80 GIG PS3's, however have a 3% failure rate, which doesn't sound like much, but thats about 1 out of every 10 or 12 sold, so i wouldn't go spouting off about reliability too much.
