SNES Yoshi's Island: Sluggy the Unshaven

SNES Yoshi's Island: Raphael the Raven

SNES Yoshi's Island: Burt the Bashful's Fort

SNES Yoshi's Island: Prince Froggy

SNES Yoshi's Island Level 1-7: Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy

I think this game is easily up there with the best 2D platform games ever created, for some people SMB3 is their favorite but I'd actually say it's between this and SMW personally, and yet it never really gets mentioned when people talk about the best Mario platformers.

There's been a lot of talk about all the brilliant Mario games because of the upcoming release of New Super Mario Bros Wii but most articles and posts don't even mention Yoshi's Island, as though it wasn't really part of the true Mario platformer series or something, when not only was it as much a true Mario platformer as the likes of SMB2 but it's also one of the greatest platform games ever made bar none and I just want to give it it's due right here right now.

Up there with the best platformers? no. Its up there with the best games of all time.

It really is a unique experience and shows Nintendo at its creative best. I made a thread not too long ago talking about Nintendos gems (this, majoras mask, sunshine, mansion, prime 2 etc) and just wanted to see why people didnt like them. And they didnt mostly because they were too different. Which is funny because those same people will now cry that games like NSMBW arent different enough.

I dont expect Nintendo to show that level of creativeness, originality in a game ever (the fans spoke). Dissapointing, but thats how things are.

That's cool, I'm not debating which out of SMB3/SMW/Yoshi's Island is the greatest 2D Mario game but just pointing it that Yoshi's Island deserves to be remembered as one of the great 2D Mario platformers since a lot of people seem to be overlooking it entirely.

i thought it was a terrible game personally, i would've called it overrated.

i didn't like the art direction, the aiming system, marios annoying crying. basically it felt like a non mario game with a kiddy mario paint job.

Why? This is a gaming forum, there are Mario games. I don't rant again Halo or Crysis threads.

Your presence in this thread is annoying.

If you don't like discussion about Mario games, find another thread that interests you.

I liked it as a great 2d platformer. It's not better then SMW but I did enjoy it more then SMB3.

Although that crying was annoying.

Yeah, it's unique. Art style gets on my nerves after a while, though.

I don't know why I can't help feeling but all the levels seemed the same and the characters were cartoony for the sake of being cartoony and in no way will this ever take the place of Super Mario World, probably my favorite Mario game.

By the time I played it I was already tired sick of the genre. I believe I had already played to much SMW, SMAS, DKC I, II, so when I played it I was like meh, then I played DKC III, double meh, and that was all for me regarding 2-d platformers in the SNES.

One of the best games of all time and my personal favourite game ever. A beautiful blend of art, challengs and creativity with some of the most memorable levels to grace a platformer. Touch fuzzy, Get Dizzy, Ultimate Castle Perfection, The impossible Maze. Quite simply stunning. I'm playing it again right now. And the last boss

So out of curiousity, did anyone around here get 100% perfect 900 points (or a thousand in the GBA version) in all 6 worlds?

I loved this game as well, I remember being young and playing it at the store(Sears), it's one of the games to make me want a SNES, and I ended up getting one.

Also, if you love platformers and missed out on this game, play it now.

I wouldn't call it Super Mario World 3. It was kind of a spiritual sequel to Yoshi's Island. It wasn't that bad, but nothing about it felt right. It had extremely lackluster level design. In comparison to Yoshi's Island, it blew in a monumental way. On its own merits, it was underwhelming and terribly mediocre.

Its quite difficult. I did it (actually when I play it I always go 100%) since you have like absurdly difficult levels like Kameks Revenge and the impossible maze. It feels so rewarding though :D

ActicEdge

I got 100% on the SNES version but all I got for it was some stars on the title screen from what I can remember.

This is the single reason I can't quite give Yoshi's Island the title of greatest platformer of all time, and I really want to, but that one tiny little element just let me down ever so slightly and especially after the super reward I got for completing SMW 100% (which was of course a lovely extended ending to the game, highlighting all the enemies, as well as a whole new color palette and some changed enemy positions etc).

Still apart from that one tiny little flaw, well imo it's a flaw, it's as near perfect and just pure fun a gaming experience as I have ever played.

Er yeah, I think I borrowed this from a mate way back. Didn't your ears get attacked my singing children inbetween every level (yeah it was a bit like xbox live :p)?..as if the levels themselves didn't suck enough already. Absolute torture.

I vaguely remember something like that. I haven't played the game in a long long time (and I don't want to) so I don't remember exactly what it sounded like. What I remember clearly was hating the visuals. They were so bland and generic compared to Yoshi's Island.

That's mean  Mario 3 > YI, fact :x

I would be one of those people who disagrees with that opinion :)

One of the MAJOR reasons I like both SMW and YI over SMB3 is because you can go back to previous worlds in SMW and YI and replay the levels as many times as you want, and that adds a lot of discovery and replayability to these types of games imo (especially with all the secrets in the levels in Mario platformers), whereas in SMB3 once you move on to a new world you can't go back and if you use a warp whistle it means you would have to start a new game just to see worlds/levels you have skipped this time (which I did by accident on occasion). SMB3 is still totally brilliant, and was mind blowing at the time, but if it was possible to go back to previous worlds/maps it would be even better imo. Also if the graphics could match the likes of SMW and YI that would also help just a little bit more too.

IMO I would put the order:

1. SMW (even though there's slightly more creativity and stand out moments in YI imo I still can't really fault SMW it in any way)

2. YI (would have been 1 most likely if the developer had rewarded me just a little bit better for completing the game 100%)

3. SMB3 (slightly better graphics and the ability to jump back into worlds/levels would have made this a serious contender for number 1)

Well, by "not that bad" I meant that is wasn't broken, but yeah, overall, the experience of Yoshi's Story was an extremely bad one.

Tragic_Kingdom7

Er yeah, I think I borrowed this from a mate way back. Didn't your ears get attacked my singing children inbetween every level (yeah it was a bit like xbox live :p)?..as if the levels themselves didn't suck enough already. Absolute torture.

I vaguely remember something like that. I haven't played the game in a long long time (and I don't want to) so I don't remember exactly what it sounded like. What I remember clearly was hating the visuals. They were so bland and generic compared to Yoshi's Island.

Just searched for it - OMFG They re-released it on the Wii!!!!! It got a a 4.0 :D

Yep, it was a great game and also very impressive tecnically with lots of mode7 effects. The sequel on N64 was a desapointment imo

PAL360

You mean Yoshi's Story? Yeah, that game blew.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. There was a sequal on the N64??!!!????!!? How could i have missed this. And its not as if i was not informed back then, i have so many N64 magazines.

Regardless, i dont think its THAT bad if it truly is the sequal to MW2. Ebay, here i come!

Yep :P

But dont worry. It wasnt even close to Yoshi´s Island

That.....that was pretty cool. No way near as bad as ActicEdge made it out to be.

I eeally want to get it now. Ive been looking at a few reviews and the general feeling is that its a mediocre game and a crap game compared to MW2. It did look a little basic but it has that feeling, the spirit of MW2.

But why are the graphics so crap? even for an N64 game. I think it looks worse than the DKC games for the SNES. Anyway i've just ordered it for £6 and i guess il see when it gets here.
