Kotaku has learned that, earlier today, Sony informed developers of a new feature for the PlayStation 3: the ability to save games in the "cloud".

Cloud storage means that, rather than keeping your save game data on your PlayStation 3's hard drive, it's instead saved remotely to a server that Sony runs. The advantage of this is that not only does it save the user space on their hard drive, but since it's tied to a PlayStation Network account, it can be pulled down to different consoles whenever and wherever the user desires.

First rumoured all the way back in 2009, there is of course a catch: it'll only be made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, not the great unwashed. Actually, there are two catches: Sony bundled the announcement with the clause that, because saving games to the cloud "will allow save data with the copy prohibited attribute to be copied into the online storage", developers are able to opt out and bar their games from using it should there be a concern.

Sony will call the process "Online Saving", and it'll be made available as part of the PS3's upcoming 3.60 firmware update. We've contacted the company for further information, and will update if we hear back.

The other advantage of this is that you can't resume a saved game without an internet connection, and Sony has full control over your save game files... NEAT!

did they disable the thing where i could put my saves on flash drives and pro duo cards? if not i may move my saves over to those, my ps3 is a launch 60 gig so i have been getting a bit nervous about how long it will continue to hold up.

Interesting! This may be useful for stopping all the PS3 hackers if they have PSN accounts. I hope Sony makes this feature free so they can punish the hackers.

I persoanlly love anything cloud. Sure it is risky and can cause issues if you have no internet connection, but I still love it. I once forgot to trasfer my AC2 saves after reformating my PC. Only to find out later they use the same feature it would see. I was really happy :).

Steam has this, its mostly a cool feature that makes moving between multiple computers easy. Syncing issues can cause problems with losing progress though.

Because they can stop you from using your file if they don't like it for any reason. And there's that whole internet connection thing, and what happens when they shut down those servers (and eventually, they WILL)? You don't have control over your own save file, and I don't like it.

I'm pretty sure you can still save on your hdd (which eventually will die, probably before the servers are down). The entire point of this is about back-up.

I know. It's OPTIONAL. But I still don't like it, because THAT'S WHERE THE INDUSTRY IS GOING. Look, I like owning things. That means physical copies and data I can control and can manipulate at a whim. This does not allow me to do that. is it a nice feature for people who are into this sort of thing and would like a back-up? Yes. Should everyone have access to it, whether they have PSN Plus or not? Hell yeah. I still don't like it.

Anyone who has ever had a PS3 crash and burn on them would appreciate this feature. You can back game saves up, but it's a huge pain in the butt. And some of them are encrypted, so you can't back them up except with a monolithic backup. I agree that Sony could (potentially) use this to inconvenience you if they think they smell a rat, but if you're not doing anything disreputable then you have no reason to be worried about that. I think this is good news.

Well, true, but I don't have to worry about losing it for a stupid reason, barring my ability to resist the urge to throw the system in the pool.

YLOD is pretty stupid, IMO. And a lot more frequent than some hacker destroying the server/the company shutting down the server because no one is using/the administrator deleting your save file presumably because you have violated something (in which case you have ability to sue them).

Yep. If it was the 360 doing it he would think it was the greatest thing ever. I love this idea. I have lost several game saves by accident and this will prevent that. Good thinking Sony.

In Burnout Paradise you could upload your save to a Criterion website and it gave you a customisable map of all the collectables you had left.
