Its a long drawn out argument here, but I was wondering how many people actually know that Microsoft actually makes money on Games For Windows and anything that is produced using the windows platform.

Directly, Microsoft makes zero on any typical Windows app. The only way they make money is indirectly though increases sales of Windows, or through more sales of their development products.

That doesn't mean they're exclusive games though, if that's the point your trying to make.

Indirectly? Yes, from increased software sales (but this is a very small "bump.") Directly? Very little

I thought Microsoft makes nothing for "games for windows" titles, unless they publish them. I thought it was just to show consumers some of the features to expect in the game aswell as the quality has been looked at.

They still make money off of Games For Windows since it is more than likely Microsoft Game Studios has been involved in it whether its development, publishing or distribution. On a side note, most Games For Windows uses Live Anywhere which is pretty much like XBL without the fees...they gain money off that through DLC content. They gain very little money though And no....Sony doesn't get money from putting games on DVD...they didnt. SOny didnt invent the DVD, the DVD was invented by Toshiba and a company called Matushusita

Sony Laptops and Desktops run Microsoft Windows OS...so they both get money. MS get some from letting Sony use their OS and Sony gets some from sales, they earn very little money from selling them because they use computer parts manufactured by other companies and therefore must pay them for their parts. The same goes with every other company out there. Their all business partners, yes that includes MS and Sony

Windows is a open format, so i i don't think game companies don't have to pay them. I could be wrong.

I don't see how Microsoft makes money from PC games unless they publish it. DirectX? Free for developers. Games for Windows Live? Free for developers. Windows? Only if you had to buy a new copy for every new game out there.

As far as I'm aware all the "Games for Windows" certification means is that it meets the requirements of a certain set of features. I wasn't aware of publishers needing to pay any licensing fees purely to put "Games for Windows" on their games.

So, I'm guess this thread is about 360/PC multiplats. But even if they did make money on "Games for Windows" it would still be a separate platform anyway... :\

They make money on selling operating systems and development software. And distribution if you count the GFWL store.

That's about it.

Hopefully they do not know this as it's false. MS doesn't make money from GFW branded games, it's the other way around..MS actualy pays to have that brand attached to other publishers' games. Also..they do not make money out of windows programs other people make, not from sales anyway. THe only profit they get is incirectly from general tools people buy to make any software,

When a Dev makes a game on the 360they have to pay MS which is how MS makes their money.

When a Dev makes a game on the PC they don't pay MS

however MS is using games as a form of advertisement for windows. so they dont profit from games being sold but it helps spread windows to more homes

Not really, they don't make hardly anything because most people already have windows, nobody uses GFWL to buy in-game stuff, and they don't make any money from hardware or software sold. So basically it's just selling OS

No they do not.. The pc is a open platform that developers don't have to pay royalities for.. The whole Games for Windows thing on top of that, Microsoft hardly gets a cent for.. Its merely to promote more sales of windows in general.. People are seriously misinformed.

One does not need Microsoft Office, infact there are plenty of free and legal word processors out there which do 99% of things like Microsoft word does.. And they rarely publish games any more, I think the last game they published was Age of Empires 3?

alright lest look a mass effect 2. published by ea, no gfwl = zero for ea. bfbc2 same thing, left 4 dead released on steam or in a box copy that need steam, ms makes zero again. the only thing you can say ms gets from pc games is the sale of windows which is like once every 5 years and most people don't buy a new os for gaming. Did I need my 8gb ram for gaming no, I upgraded my os so I could use my 8gb for photoshop etc. pc gaming makes ms nothing, that's why they want everyone to buy a 360 and don't release their games on pc.
