Because the previous two have not been AAA and expectations are becoming higher on GS, Whereas both Metroids have been AAA. SSBM has a bigger chance of flopping than MP.
Imagine if Halo 3, Crysis, Super Smash Brothers Melee, and Metal Gear Solid 4 all floped!

In my opinion halo 3 has already floped, I was expecting it to look like the e3 trailer and nothing less, there's still hope but i really don't care to much, there are better games like the darkness, bioshock and mass effect.
You know, a game can flop and yet people can have a lot of fun with it. The only purpose of the whole flop thing is to make fun of fans of other systems.What i mean is, if a hypedgame receives 8.9, it flopped, sure it did, and people can use it to make fun of fanboys, but does it make the game a bad game? Of course not. Since when 8.9 is a bad score? I think most will get my point.
