Because it has no split screen multiplayer. No offline multiplayer. No quick race. No time trial.
ONLY career mode.

What kind of racing game is that? A bad one imo.
Really sucks, I was looking forward to playing my friends with Motorstorm (I'm not getting a PS3, but I know one or two of my friends are).

Failure. *sigh*

It doens't suck, just is kind of annoying, but overall, it's a great game. You should try it out instead of moping about the lxk of splitscreen. Give it a shot, and you might like it, at least rent the game.

It's way too dumbed down especially for a next-gen title. Fun for a little while and then you just throw it in the closet and never see it again, thus it got the right score.

Nah, like I said, I'm not getting a PS3. But yeah I'll give it a go at a friend's house anyway... but... argh I was really looking forward to seeing who can cause the most damage to eachother split screen! How hard is it to implement that in a game? What stopped them? Either lack of budget (doubt it, was one of the most hyped, highest budgeted ps3 games), or lack of console power? I'm not a hardware techie so I'm not sure if having two players in the same map cause more pressure on a machine or not, but could be. :/ meh

That's what happens when a Dev is given enough money to make a game look great but not enough time to generate enough content.

I think it may have been the deadline, and the developers were trying to get in a good campaign and singleplayer in there before the launch, and I guess they just never took the time to add split screen. Yeah I'm pissed about this too, but it''s fun online, if they'd have taken out online, I would never get this game.

That's actually exactly what it does. When playing split screen a machine has to render two completely different screens... that's why you'll notice that in some games that support it multiple screen multiplayer doesn't look quite as sharp as the single screen single player.

Taken from the review:

However, when you consider how fantastic Motorstorm's graphics are, the lack of split-screen multiplayer maybe makes a bit more sense (though it's no less disappointing, all the same). Of the current crop of PS3 games, Motorstorm absolutely takes the prize as the best looking. Sure, there's some ugly textures that crop up now and again, and the frame rate tends to dip during particularly destruction-heavy moments (split-screen would have probably murdered it altogether), but those few issues aside, the game's a real visual achievement.

Because it has less vehicles and tracks than Excite Truck and has no sense of speed?

It was rushed, Evolution didn't have the time to add all the features to the game.  PS3 needs games at this moment, and while I don't particularly think its a good idea to rush games, it was a comprise they had to make.  Nonetheless, it is receiving decent reviews.
