"Following on from reports suggesting that you'll need to stand up in order to use the device, and the revelation that significant space will be required for the camera to see you, it now appears that you - or your mum, at least - is going to have to dress a certain way if they want to 'jump in' with Kinect." looks like someone didn't get the memo about being able to sit down while playing kinect

Sweet jebus. With all these stories coming out about Kinect's failings, you have to wonder if MS is just that incompetent or if Sony/Nintendo are trying to spread mis-information in the hopes of torpedoing it (I'll get the tin-foil hats!).

It just keeps getting worse and worse but most people here won't have to worry about the skirt issue.

The author isn't well informed. It has already been stated it can be used sitting down. As for not being able to wear long skirts, it's understandable. If a game is trying to detect your legs, it's going to have trouble if they're covered up, no? Don't see what the big deal is here.

And why do people here care? 99.9% don't wear long skirts...unless you're all kilt wearing Scottish. In that case your skirt might be short enough to work.

Suddenly, many on SW will claim they do :P But yeah, it needs to see your legs if it's tracking you. Kind of obvious.

If your going to play games like the ones on Kinect, are you really gonna want to wear a skirt anyway?

On another note, has the problem with Kinect detecting dark colours been cleared up yet?

did you guys plan on playing in dresses? Honestly though i could care less about any Kinect news, good or bad. I'm about as interested in Kinect as I am in the Wii, which is not at all. I wonder how many 360 owners here at Gamespot are interested in the Kinect. I'd bet it's a low percentage.

How does that scream fail? It's tracking your body's movement - I'd be worried if you COULD wear a skirt/something covering your legs and it still 'work'.

No no no....that was unclear sorry. I meant that if it's supposed to be tracking your arms and legs - then it wouldn't be much good if it worked whilst it was unable to identify where they were.

Anyone who's read about how the hardware works should have already known this. Are people still confusing an near IR depth mapping with thermal vision?

Soccer moms might.

Technically any clothing that obscures the 'normal' human frame too much will cause problems.

I wonder how it will deal with really fat people.

Someone like that would just be an amorphous blob to Kinect.

Although is this revelation meant to mean that it will simply flip out because it thinks someone in a skirt has no legs, or will it just pause the game and say "DisKinected"

How am I? Sorry if I've misunderstood as I'm tired - but Rare have said you can use it sitting down if the game is designed for that use. And an image of that conference in Oxford, showed someone using Milo sitting down.

Because you said the author isn't well informed, but then state that the game can be used sitting down, unless the game specifically requires you to be standing.

Therefore, the author is correct in the article.

Rare have basically just said the same line that MS have been saying for a long time.

Vague "experiences" will work with Kinect, without specifying how it will work or how well.

When one looks at the tech, how it creates a depth map, it likely doesn't work very well at all when you're "merged" with a sofa in a seated position, compared to when you're standing with free space around you.

It probably also depends on the libraries of human positions available.

No, because the 'non sitting down' part was shown to be untrue (from the developers and the image at least). I didn't state that the author isn't well informed - but it seemed to be quite a negative bias (using a now seemingly false report to emphasise how it's got a list of problems).

Whoops, I thought you were Ross_the_bos, the first guy I responded to. :P lol my mistake. But the article is true if you're talking about a game that requires you to stand. You can't sit down and you can't wear a dress to play this(specific) game. Maybe that's what the article writer was referring to?
