So, now that all the press conferences are over, what do you think? Here's my take. And yes, I did as I promised and watched them all live.
EA: 5/10.
A Way Out looks promising, Anthem was a damn tease and I had no patience for that, NFS Payback looks okay, and Battlefront II actually looks pretty cool. Everything else was just boring or cringe-worthy. Not a good start to E3.
Microsoft: 6/10.
Highlights were Forza Motorsport 7, Metro Exodus, Assassin's Creed Origins, Sea of Thieves, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and Anthem. Crackdown 3 was okay. Starred Terry Crews and looked Saints Row-y. Scorpio aka Xbox One X was impressive tech but pricey at $499. There was also Xbox backward compatibility. Unfortunately, the show felt overstuffed, and I kind of have a bit of trouble remembering everything they showed. A lot of the games were "exclusives at launch." Hah. Nice try, Microsoft.
Bethesda: 5/10.
Too short, not enough meat. Wolfenstein and Evil Within 2 were sweet. VR games were okay. But paid mods again? Really? Come on. And where are all those new IPs they've been hinting? Disappointing.
Devolver Digital: Hilarious.
"Devolver's finally a real publisher!" "Hey Devolver, when are you gonna announce Shenmue 3?" Loved the Screen Pay and Earliest Access gags. After the disappointing Bethesda presser, I needed this. Ruiner looked cool, too.
PC Gaming Show: 8/10.
Not overstuffed. Good pacing. Gave each game enough time in the limelight without dragging too much. Lots of nice games shown. Highlights were XCOM2 expansion, Battletech, Mount & Blade: Bannerlord, The Last Light and Age of Empires Definitive Edition. Sole lowlight was Intel and their e-sports and VR crap. I can't believe it took the PC Gaming Show to finally make this year's E3 come alive.
Ubisoft: 8/10.
Great conference. Like the PC Gaming Show, great pacing, gave each game plenty of spotlight. Highlights were The Crew 2, Skull & Bones and Far Cry 5. Beyond Good & Evil 2 was a mic drop moment. Mario & Rabbid XCOM looks cool too. Weird Just Dance section with the neon Sub-Zeroes was the sole lowlight. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Ubisoft nailed it this year.
Sony: 7/10.
Two new non-VR game announcements: one a multiplat, another a remaster. Nothing else that hasn't been announced before. A bit too trailer heavy and only two game demos. Days Gone looks solid if familiar. Spider-Man looks very promising. No real lowlight; the Final Fantasy VR fishing game was just weird. Solid but not spectacular.
Nintendo: 7/10.
Short but meaty. Metroid Prime 4 was just a tease, so not quite a mic drop, but still big news. Under-the-radar but significant Pokemon RPG announcement. New Kirby and Yoshi games, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Breath of the Wild DLCs and Mario Odyssey were also highlights. Stuffed but not overstuffed, and no real lowlights. Solid effort. Bravo, Nintendo.
