I can see a clear victor before I even make the poll :P
By platformer I mean the more "traditional" type of platformers (those driven by mascots and whatnot).
Anyway, mine is Mario series (obviously :P ).
Vote and/or mention your fave series.

Castlevania wasn't a platformer even when it was linear. It's definitely got some elements of a platformer, but what distinguished Castlevania from other games was the action, RPG, and adventure elements. Platforming wasn't the focus of the game, as it was in Super Mario Bros or Sonic the Hedgehog. Platforming was a vehicle through which the focus of the game played out. Being a 2D sidescroller doesn't make it a platformer. Kirby, Sonic, Rayman, Mario. Those are platformers. Castlevania, Metroid, Contra, Mega Man? Not platformers. The Old Castelavania Series.

Out of the poll options, Mario. Astro Boy by Treasure was good though. In general I just love Treasure games.Fried_ShrimpAstro Boy: Omega Factor was a SHMUP/BMUP hybrid.

The emphasis, the defining factors of the series, are everything EXCEPT platforming. The reason the game has platforming is because that's how travel worked in adventure games in those days. I haven't played Castlevania in a while but I remember the three gba games having rpg elements like leveling up, and upgrading stats with equipment, etc.
As for the topic Banjo Kazooie is my favorite even though there are only two installments. (dont remind of nuts and bolts, it only depresses me...ah man)

Did you play the PS version? Castlevanai 1, 2,3 and 4 did not have that feature.[QUOTE="rockerbikie"][QUOTE="savebattery"] Castlevania wasn't a platformer even when it was linear. No. I started with the GBA's then the DS games. I didnt even know there were that many original ones, but I think I've played the first one. Not and rpg but I dont think I'd consider it a platformer either.
To those arguing what's a platformer and what not: I had the more typical, mascot-driven platfomers in mind for this poll. You know, Mario, Sonic and the like. Sure, Castlevania has strong platformer elements, but it's not to be compared with Mario series. You can mention Castlevania, though, I won't be angry ;)
I entered this thread, and a big smile went across my face when I saw that Rayman was actually included. Do you know how often Rayman is brought up on these forums, or anywhere else online for that matter? NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Usually I have to mention it :P
But of course my smile was immediately turned upside down to see that I was the only one who voted Rayman
You guys obviously have never played Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast....I do pity you.

He must be confusing the original and it's siblings with SOTN and its siblings. Then again a platformer is a subgenre of the action genre alongside others like BEMUPs, shooters and fighters. So how can a game be action second and platformer fourth? Nonsense.
Anyways Mario is the best. If you disagree you are wrong.;)

Contra is considered a Run and Gun Platformer so is Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug. (But they can also be considered a SHMUP)
Edit* I voted for Mario because Mario is in my favorite 2D Mascot Platformer (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) and my favorite 3D Mascot Platformer (Super Mario Galaxy 2)
Though I guess my favorite Platformer over all could be Metroid Prime (It is a 3D FPPA) (First Person Platform Adventure)
Mario it isn't even close when you have masterpieces like World,Mario 3 and 2 Galaxy games as well as the original on the SNES and the almighty Mario 64 what other series can compete with that in platforming stakes.
