I'm not gonna lie, SW, I love the Xbox Series X design. Not only the way it looks, but even certain design choices. I like how the vents come out at the top and even have the green inlays (or whatever they're called). I also appreciate that you can plug in an extended SSD drive right in the back into a slot. All of the these design choices are excellent, and the compact form factor fit nicely into a room. Also can't forget the glowing Xbox symbol and the sounds it makes when you turn the console on and off. This very well may be my favorite console design of all time. How about you, SW? Your favorite console design of all time?

I too would go with the Series X, actually. Looks like a simple piece of tech and not a toy.

Probably original ps2 (front loading) and X1S. Very similar designs - i like their practical fit-anywhere shape/design and no-nonsense look that's still elegant in a way

I really liked the design of the N64 when it came out. It looked very sleek and futuristic at the time

Then there’s the monstrosity that will always hold a special place in my heart.

Sega was so crazy. But allowing console gamers to upgrade their hardware was a very cool idea. We got the option again with the N64 and Sega Saturn RAM cartridges. I really wish someone would do this kind of stuff again.

Big fan of both the Wii and phat PS3 (Spider-Man font notwithstanding). Aesthetically they still remain top notch.

I'm surprised you say original, and not slim. The slim ps2 was amazing.

@SolidGame_basic: it was - my only issue is I think top loading on it is less practical (other than transportation obviously) - like, you can't just squirrel it away any which way like my old phatty. Need to be able to pop the lid open so its probably 4x as tall in terms of the space it needs

Lots of consoles looked nice. The ps2, and xbox series S/X are among my favorite designs. The series S is so sleek, and so is the X. MS didn't play around this time with the designs, they're fantastic.

My favorite design though has to be the gamecube. It looks so toyish, kiddy, and one could even say ugly in some respects but it had a charm to it that just screamed "play me!" Geeze, did nintendo do everything possible to make the console look as kiddy as possible, even adding a handle to the back for easy carrying, and a light that turned on that looked like a smiley face. Whoever designed the gamecube needs to get a raise and get fired at the same time I'm not even sure which.

It's funny, now nintendo does the complete opposite nowadays. They design hardware that looks sleek and like it should be for adults, but underneath they promote the shit out of it to kids as much as possible.

I like the design of the XSX, looks very simple and fits in with most decor, does not look gaudy (PS5 looks a little too much imo). However, a big downside to its design imo (I look the look but more in terms of functionality) is that it is hard to fit in some/many entertainment centers due to its width (my PS5 fits fine but XSX does not). Series S looks quite nice too, simple, small and easy to integrate.

Another excellent design imo is the original PS3, that console looked great and quite high end (if memory serves me right). Loved how the PS3 looked.

Technically a handheld, but the PS Vita was excellent as well, shame that more developers did not support it.

I always liked the translucent console design even though I never owned any of them it's the Y2K aesthetic that I'm really a fan of from the late 90's to the early 00's.

DS Lite, Wii, Gamecube, Series X/S, One X/S.

Sometimes simplicity is the best design and I guess I got a thing for squares and rectangles.

I think ps3 with its glossy black design looks good. XSX looks very simple and neat as well. PS5 though i was wowed by its first release, i wish it could have been smaller as i have to redesign my console tv for it.

Nostalgia would lend me to say Dreamcast, but I did really like the look of the glossy black Xbox 360 S model.

The Atari Box. Sleek and modern looking, yet nostalgic at the same time. Too bad it is otherwise kinda crap, and overpriced. No way I'm buying it, but I might dig one up from the New Mexico desert someday.

Generally i like a console that is compact but also stands out a little bit. grabs your attention.

OF all time? Probably the Wii (though i would have preferred it in Black like the 32GB Wiiu). Very sleek looking. That blue LED on the front was also a very nice touch.

As for handhelds: initially i was going to say DS Lite but i cant decide between the DS Lite ans Vita (og model though both models look great). Probably the vita edges it the more i think on it. really close though. Both great looking handhelds.

Of the current gens i would go with the Xbox series S. it's like a big domino :D. Sleek but still stands out just a bit. a nice size. looks cool.

The PS5 is just a bit too big. I like the flair (though some after market shells do improve it). but not a fan of the size. I look forward to seeing what sony do with a PS5 slim though down the road.

The XSX....every time i see it i think "waste basket". not for me. I love the way its constructed internally. very clever. but the outside...nah.

The Switch is also REALLY boring. Its the most boring looking device nintendo has made possibly ever.

Wondermega / X'Eye (Sega/JVC, 1992)

I don't have one, but it looks futuristic and sleek. I think this is how the Dreamcast should have been designed.

According to Sega Retro:

  • "The Wondermega is a combined Sega Mega Drive and Sega Mega-CD unit created by Victor. It was initially released in 1992 as the first "combo" unit of its kind, seeing a North American release as the X'Eye in 1994."
  • "Also included is a digital signal processor (DSP) for audio enhancement, a MIDI output and two microphone inputs for use as a karaoke machine."

The curves kind of remind me of a 1960 Corvette in my older age. The move towards plainer console designs in the modern era reminds me of what happened to cars over the decades as well.

Design tastes change so much, so a console that was cutting edge design in the past looks dated now….I loved the 360 design as well as the original ps3. Also the PS4 slim impressed me. The ps5 belongs to those days, not the minimalist designs that we are used to these days…it’s truly awful aesthetically as well as functionally. Series X is designed great except for the supports sticking out if you wanted to lay it on its side.

Yeah, I think the DC design is good enough, but I wanted Sega to make a bit bolder design choice to make us feel the power of the 128-bit machine. Sure, I do not deny that front loading is more convenient. But my priorities are the impact of its appearance and the unique design philosophy that it can also be used for karaoke.

Sega Genesis for me. Compared to the boxy shape of the NES, the Genesis was smaller, the cartridges we also smaller and it had a sleekness to it.

@SolidGame_basic: I haven't seen one in person in fairness but i have a good rough idea how big it is (roughly 2 3 wiius stacked on top of each other :P).

Don't get me wrong. As a piece of Kit the XSX is very good. They managed to pack a lot of horsepower into a very small space and still keep it cool and quiet. The shape of it makes sense from a functional standpoint. The engineering is excellent overall.

But every time i see a pic of it the first thing that pops into my head is something like:

It's just a very bland console imho. Very forgettable.

Edit: ok after a quick look. more like 3 Wiius stacked on top of each other.

Think the Ps4 has a very classy design. Simple and timeless!
