Right now, I’m going with Square Enix for both. They’ve brought Final Fantasy back. It was such a staple of gaming for me growing up. Then in the 2010s they went in a weird direction with FF13 (never played through it, but it just seems meh). FF15 was not bad, but they messed up the launch. The story was barebones. But then announced FF7 Remake and delivered on Part 1. And then they announced Final Fantasy 16, the pixel remasters, FF7 Remake Part 2, and a remake of Crisis Core. If you’re a PS5 gamer, you’re in for a treat for the next year or so.

So that’s my choice. How about you, SW? Your favorite developer and publisher at this moment?

At the moment, going purely by modern games, it's "Mimimi Games", who developed Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3.

Publisher wise, Devolver Digital.

Remedy probably at the moment because of Alan Wake 2 and the Max Payne remakes.

Don't forget other Square Enix success stories like FF14, Dragon Quest and Nier. Things are looking up for Square Enix (despite selling off their Western studios).

Never played FF 14, but Dragon Quest 11S was my first Dragon Quest game and I loved it! Also loved Nier Automata! played Replicant and it was not bad (loved the characters and music). Now Square needs to bring back classic franchises!

Favourite dev: Creative Assembly. They make Total War games. They are far from perfect with everything they do, but I admire their ambition, something a lot of developers seem to lack these days. See: the Immortal Empires map they just revealed today, for example.

Favourite publisher: Devolver Digital. They publish quirky, off-beat games like Broforce and Serious Sam, and their E3 show is the best.

Probably Square-Enix right now.

I was also going to give Atlus a mention, but they backstabbed Sony fans initially and no apology whatsoever. I have lost respect for them.

This is a tough question for me, because my favorite developers and publishers like Sony, Square Enix, Capcom, and FromSoft are all currently doing great work.

Normally I would pick Square Enix, but since TC has already mentioned them enough, I would go with Capcom. Their current lineup of games in development such as RE4, SF6, DD2, MHR: Sunbreak, Exoprimal, and Pragmata all look very interesting and remind me of their golden age.

I have especially high hopes for SF6. I can't wait to play it myself after seeing Maximillian Dood's videos and seeing how visually stunning it is and how fun the new mechanics look.

Publisher - Capcom/Sony? Don't really know about publishers since i don't exactly follow them.

Developer - Godsoftware. Nobody is even close. Current Fromsoft is at least as good as the best days of Rockstar, RARE and Bioware. The last big developer that wasn't consumed by greed. But it makes me wonder, what would happen to them if Miyazaki was to retire. He better be like Kojima, and keep on developing games until he is 80.

Publisher: Devolver, for representing independent and small-scale development.

Developer: Wube. Could also be publisher since they are self-published but whatever.

Yup.

Currently have about 700 hours invested in Factorio, and still going strong. With a few other exceptions, that's about 500 hours more than any other game I've ever played.

Honorable mention: Coffee Stain, for Satisfactory and Valheim and Deeprock Galactic.

Developer: Remedy

I didn't like Control and it was kind of a chore to play through. Still, their upcoming projects look amazing, and Alan Wake, the Max Payne remasters and Control 2 are all games I'm excited for.

Developer: Relic

Age of Empires IV and Company of Heroes 3, this dev is single handedly keeping RTS alive

Developer: Insomniac

They are the Rare of PS5: Spiderman, Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank, Wolverine, Spiderman 2, .... If it weren't for them the PS5 would have half as many games.

Not to mention excellent performance and RT performance options in their games, a VRR mode that blew me away, PC versions...

Publisher: Sony

Sony still seems to firmly believe in singleplayer games, made one of the best pack in games since Mario 64 and Wii Sports (Astro's Playroom) and keeps winning by doing nothing.

Publisher: Bethesda

Every time I think: Bethesda is past its high point they blow me away with something new. Deathloop was GOTY 2021.

They have Redfall, Doom and Quake upcoming, which third party AAA publisher has that many great shooters?

Historically it is of course Kojima Productions, but as the god of video game developers, Kojima-San lost his rights to Metal Gear...

I'd have to say it is From Software who is number 1 for me. Which is crazy since I did not play a single From Software game until November 2020. but have since spent 800++ hours playing all 7 of their masterpieces.

Naughty Dog gets runner up (or third)

Historically: Koji Pro > Naughty Dog > Rockstar North > FromSoft > everyone else

Currently: FromSoft > Naughty Dog > Kojima Productions > everyone else.

Don't really have one. The ones I loved in the past started to suck. Could list a bunch of developers who've made like one game, but that feels stupid.

Yeah, probably same for me. They're still solid. Very dissapointing compared to what they were, but which large gaming company isn't..

Remember when Valve, Blizzard, EA, Ubisoft and many more were awesome? That was nice.

Embracer Group. They have done a very good job with taking care of the studios they acquire. Franchises like Titan Quest have been treated good by them. I would have no issues with Embracer buying more studios.

  • Capcom
  • Devolver Digital
  • DotEmu
  • Sega
  • Square Enix

Favorite is probably Sucker Punch at the moment, as I adore Ghost of Tsushima. Favorite game in years.

I would say Naughty Dog. As a developer I find them unparalleled, but I do believe they’re a bit too ideologically driven.

At this moment in time, Sony is my favorite publisher. They have caused bu*thurt in cows like no other. The cows mental gymnastics are off the charts.

Favorite Developer: Valve, because why not. They gave us HL: Alyx and also cause cows bu*thurt. Win-Win.
