The Last of Us

This has to be the best PS3/PS2 game I have ever played.  Reasons why without spoiling:

1. Amazing depth to the main character Joel

2. This game brings out some great emotions without trying too hard.

3. Great pacing.

4. Gameplay is very rewarding and has great replayability.

5. Best console graphics ever.

6. Amazing use of sound.

7. The relationship between Joel and Ellie feels real, and the build up is quite entertaining.

8. Some hilarious moments.

9. The variety in this game from weapons to enviroments is astounding.

10. The game is not too long or not too short.

PS  I haven't played multiplayer yet.

Resident Evil or Metal Gear Solid.

Resident Evil because it was creepy and fun to play. Same with MG minus the scary stuff. The story is really good though.

It's between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross for me. The stories were great. The battle systems unique and fun (CC had the more strategic battle system). And the characters were memorable (although CC tended to suffer a bit in that department.

Thus far TLOU is really good, but I'm not sure I like its general flow.  I suppose all the "open world" games are taking a toll and I find myself growing impatient with having to babysit the AI or wait for a scripted element to pass, but the writing is top notch and the presentation is gripping as hell.

On topic, I don't have any single one favorite but a list.  But to bypass derailing the thread, I'll just say Shadow of the Colossus.

Even if your expectations are high, or even if you are a Sony hater, this game will impress you. I think it is better than RE4 in almost every way.

Streets of Rage 2

- Fast and fluid gameplay that is easy to pick up and play, but difficult to master
- A variety of difficulty settings
- Cool and unique characters
- Awesome bosses
- Amazing music
- Stellar atmosphere
- Perfect length
- Perfect pacing
- The best Co-Op experience ever
- Versus mode

It's a timeless masterpiece that I still play more often than any of my other games. This to me is so key, because a truly great game should be just as much fun to play 20 years later from the first time you played it.

Majora's Mask because of...

1. the superb way the story and atmosphere interacts to really draw the player in, telling the story in a way few games can.

2. The atmosphere truely made the game world feel alive... The 3 day cycle actually enhanced it since you could always find the characters at the same place on the same day... It made the world feel like everything was on a schedule, and that realy helped enhance the mood.

3. the outstanding visual design that blends both realism with fantasy... Never seen anything like it.

4. The soundtrack is outstanding in every way (although it's not my fav Zelda soundtrack).

5. The game was dark as hell without being very violent or depressing (for the most part), and still maintaining the E rating.  As such, it's one of the most truely mature games ever made.

6. The gameplay perfected the Zelda formula by adding a time limit that enhanced the game rather than hindered it, and the abundant sidequests made it the most enjoyable Zelda world to date.

7. Even though there weren't as many dungeons as other games, the level design was simply jaw dropping for each dungeon, including the final four before the final boss.

8. The strong cast of the various characters you meet along the way adds great emotion to the story.

9. The transformation masks gave the gameplay further depth by essentially giving you five different characetrs to play as (Link, Deku, Goron, zelda, and the special final transformation mask).

10. It has quite possibly the most emotional, yet understated endings in the history of video games.

Super Smash Bros Melee. Yes I know it's an unusual choice but you could play it 100 years from now and still have a blast. There is just so much content in a single package.

I think the Smash series, as a whole, are some of the best party games available, especially if you wanna have a huge ass tournament.

Resident Evil 4

-Fantastic pacing
-Great encounter design
-Nice variety
-Good atmosphere
-Solid boss fights
-Leon S Kennedy and his one liners

It's the best third person shooter of all time. Hell I'd argue it's the best action game period.

can't possibly pick a single one.

games that are up there include Shadow of the Colossus, Super Mario World, Wind Waker, Golden sun, and 999.

love each one of them for vastly different reasons, so i couldn't possibly choose one over the other.

Xenoblade_Chronicles_-_1.jpg

  • Huge World
  • Soundtrack is a Masterpiece
  • Cool British Voices
  • Addictive Battle System
  • Lots to do
  • Sidequests aren't intrusive
  • 80 hour game
  • Invoking Story

This game's only flaw is its graphics, which is why I cannot wait for its sequel on Wii U. :)

TES: Skyrim or Dragon Age: Origins

Admittedly both had generic settings ,but I felt that they were so well done that it made up for it. I've played through both games at least half a dozen times before I got bored them. TES: Skyrim actually surpassed TES: Morrowind in my book which was something I didn't expect.

Indeed, this game is really high on my all time favorite games list.  It's jsut so far beyond everything that people ask of RPGs, and it does everything incredibly well. As you said, the only real flaw are the technical aspects of the graphics, but I could easily forgive them when the game was so goddamn amazing :)

Baldur's Gate 2, no other RPG has come close. Baldur's Gate 2 has an amazing soundtrack, handpainted backgrounds that still hold up today (true for all infinity engine games), some of the best character interaction in games (Minsc in general or how your party members can fight to the death if their alignments are off), mage duels make the combat some of the best, Irenicus is a badass, there is a metric boatload of content that is all high quality, and every encounter in the game means something so there is absolutely no filler in a 100 hour game.

Project Eternity can't come soon enough, these kinds of games need to make a glorious return.

Road Rash 3DO. Simple, fun, great looking during its time. The sound effects of a biker being hit was funny as heck. Add nice music videos. The Busted! scenes are hilarious.

KOTOR I and KOTOR II

 - KOTOR I came with the Xbox I bought back in 2004/5 and instantly became one of my favorites, was also my first RPG. The second while being buggy and generally not as polished as its predecessor was still a phenomenal piece of video game that expanded on the world of the original whilst delving more deeply into the mythos of the Star Wars universe. KOTOR II is still one of the best stories I've played in a video game - slow to develop, slow to end. You think you know what is happening and the game just keeps giving you more and more.

kotor 2- i know its a really flawed game and i know that its not as good as the first kotor,  but i loved the battle mechanics/formula of kotor . i also loved how you can turn your companions to jedi's. i also found certain characters more interesting like kreia and visas marr.

Surprised how many people are saying TLOU already considering its only been out a few days (Even though I'm definitely enjoying it so far). My favorite game of all time is probably Paper Mario for N64 because I think everything was done so well from the art style to the soundtrack to the combat system.

well either the game really is that life changing, or people are still drenched in the hype, which is to be expected. and i imagine the game has some sort of final plot twist to catch players off guard, raising the hype levels off the charts :P
