PlayStation Portable; PSP, Go 13%

Over the course of the last 32 years, I've played on nearly every handheld system that has ever released. I've found that out of all those systems technology has improved over time but not necessarily the games. Obviously graphics are better these days but I'm not asking which handheld is the superior one in general. I'm asking which handheld did you personally have the most fun with.

Sure, I really enjoyed Uncharted Golden Abyss on PSV but for the most part, it's a waste of technology. I also really enjoyed my PSP but without the second analog stick many games they were making became frustrating.

The handheld I remember having the most fun with and still have fun with is the Sega Game Gear. I've had mine for 27 years now and still enjoy games like Sonic Triple Trouble, Jurassic Park, and Ecco the Dolphin. The only game that the system is glaringly missing from the era is a Ninja Turtles game. I'm still looking at a couple more games to get on it such as Earthworm Jim and Paperboy. Just a great system all together.

My runner up handheld is the GBA. Great game library.

What about you guys? What is your favorite handheld of all time?

GBC or GBA. I lean more to the GBA, because holy shit, it was good. Next would definitely be the DS.

GBC or GBA. They both gave fond memories and had a great library. DS isn't too far off.

Switch.

GB before backlight was junk (even though I owned them all). DS was okay, but technically inferior to PSP/Vita (but with way better games). Switch is the first handheld that is both technically impressive and boasts good games.

Game Gear. Beautiful comfy design, tv tuner, Master System converter, GG Shinbo 1/2, Chakan, Master Of Darkness etc...

Content wise, the Gameboy murdered it, but as device and nostalgia, it wins.

I hate handhelds, they all suck (is the option you didn't give and is the only one I would have taken).

GB/GBC was the only time period I bothered with handhelds (was a kid). I don't need games on the go, nor am I in situations where I am always on the train looking to kill time. I get the appeal for some people, but I'd rather game on a big screen at home.

PSP. Insane graphics for it's time, very varied library full of AAA+ exclusives. It's build quality especially the screen were amazing. It was an all purpose media player with ad-hoc and a fully fledged web browser, special for it's time. It even ran a decent GBA emulator, so that's pretty much the finishing move for it to be the best portable of all time. Console gaming on the go became real, #thedream

Such a shame the Vita didn't become a success. It had all the hardware firepower and innovation that the first PSP lacked, but lacked all the software support sigh. Still a shame it didn't turn out to be a somewhat decent competitor to the 3DS.

Right now I would say it’s the 3DS/2DS line however give it time and it’ll eventually be the Switch because the game library will definitely grow.

Personally, the original DS. Such a wide variety of truly great games, and access to the incredible GBA library. I LOVE my 3DS, and it's very close between the two, but the DS beats it out. Only downside is it lacks the perfection in design of the GBASP, which I still hold as the most well designed handheld system ever, from an ergonomic and portability stand point.

For game library I would go with GBA. I actually really like the Micro but the SP2 (the backlit SP rather than the side lit one) is probably the best overall version of it.

For feel and just the hardware itself along with its amazing screen I would go with the Vita, kinda sad it didn't do better.

Also play on my GPD XD alot lately.

At the time of its release? Sega Game Gear. Apart from gaming, it had a TV-tuner and FM radio (plus Audio-In and Video-In) add-on.

I'm pleasently surprised to see such a varied result in the poll thus far with favorite handhelds. I'm not surprised to see GBA in the lead as it was a really great system. I remember upgrading to the SP from the original when it released. It fit perfectly in my pocket and I used it as an MP3 player with an attachment.

Sadly, my Game Gear is in the process of getting a new motherboard as it finally died after 27 years. If it gets back to working order I think I'll finally pick up Earthworm Jim for it.

Its a toss up between the SP and the 3DS. The SP covers all eras of gameboy and had a backlight/rechargeable battery. 3DS covers DS/3DS and is just hugely powerful compared to the SP.

if i was to consider all games available on a platform then it would be the 3DS. if i didnt have a handheld at the moment and was going to buy one it would be the new 3DS Xl (maybe the new 2DS XL....depending on finances). everything on the estore and DS BC as well as 3DS games means a very nice game selection.

i also have a big soft spot for the vita though. it has a big collection of PS1 and PSP games and is backed by its own pretty solid library. as a piece of handheld gaming tech its also brilliant. sony reall nailed it on the hardware front (except for the memory cards...er...yeah :S). it would be my second choice.

if i could only buy games that were released specifically for it then it would be the DS.

its too early to rate the switch on the handheld front so im not going to pass any sort of final judgement. its off to a great start though. just treating it as a handheld its epic. its the nintendo vita which is something i really love about it. it also lets you play games in different ways while on the go which is nice. games wise its also off to a great start (especially if you never owned a wii u). i means its a handheld and it can play games like BOTW, odyssey and xenoblade 2. hell it plays doom.

but its early days on the switch front.

Nintendo DSXL, loved the larger screen, played most of the Castlevania games on it. It's the last handheld I ever bought and still works great today

Can't say anything about most of those, but I really like the New 3DS. I'm also loving my Vita a lot so far.

My favourite of all time is probably the DS, since it had the best games on it.

But I also really liked what Sony did with their handhelds: PSP and Vita, not only did the tech and games like Burnout or Wipeout prove that a console experience was possible on the go, it also had some very unique games.

Like Patapon for PSP and Luftrausers for Vita.

I never owned one, but the GBA SP was the perfect handheld and I envied my friends who had them.

Extremely compact design, great battery life, great screen with on/off backlight. Plus easily the best library of games to ever grace handheld gaming.

I personally owned an original Gameboy, a DS Lite and PSP Slim and enjoyed them all but still want a GBA SP.

No love for those Tiger Electronic handhelds?

Anyway, I only own two handhelds. Original GameBoy and PSP. Didn't really play GB as I thought GameGear was better. But PSP had some good games.

@PSP107 No love for a couple including Virtual Boy, Nomad and the recent PC tablet handhelds.

I will say that I'm a bit saddened to see the Switch beating out everything else considering its lack of time on the market and thus, smaller library. It really is a great piece of tech but I feel it needs more time and a virtual console to be in the running. Still, many seem to love it.

My favorite handheld is still Gameboy/gameboy Color due to good fun games like Tetris and it also had the first Pokemon games. Just can't beat the classics.

The nintendo DS.

Best handheld ever imo, great library and a handheld with a great battery life, especially the DS lite.

Credit where credit's due, Nintendo has always been the king of handhelds. PSP was also a good handheld...Damn that gen of handhelds was great.

I'd go with PS Vita because of all of the games that you can get on it. I know that it's standalone library isn't the largest but when you factor in PS1 classics, PSP games, and a lot of other cool features like the OLED screen or the touch screen features used in games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Tearaway I still consider the PS Vita a force to be reckoned with when it comes to handheld gaming
