I know this was asked in the past, but those threads are so old, you'd get in trouble for posting in them. Anyway...

So SW, if you are fans of the platformer genre, which are your favorites?

Mine are

Super Mario Galaxy 1- Man, I used to be so NEGATIVE on the game and not even playing it before (I'm pretty sure some SWers remember that from years back). But now that I've played it, I'm pretty much at a "WTF was I thinking state?" It pretty much puts Mario in another fun game in outer space (keep in mind, this isn't his first) and uses it's new mechanics very well. I still like this more than SMG2 (which was still an awesome game, but I thought it was weak compared to the first).

Super Mario Galaxy

Rayman Origins- The first time I ever beat a traditional Rayman game (I played very little of Raving Rabids on GBA) and WOW! Makes me want to check out the other platformers in the series. It's also very addicting due to how hard it is, which is good. :D

Rayman Origins

Donkey Kong Country Returns- It's been a while since I dropped my jaw at a Donkey Kong game, after the poor ape was being used for critically bad spinoffs. It not only gave me nostalgia of playing the SNES game as a kid (I even played that as a teen-adult as well), but it was also very fresh too.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Sonic Colors (or Colours depending on where your at)- I got this the same day as SMG2, I found myself playing this more. It's very fast paced (like other Sonic games) and it's "gimmick" works.

Sonic Colors

What are your choices?

Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, LittleBigPlanet 1/2, Rayman Origins, Ratchet & Clank : A Crack in Time, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are my favorite retail platformers this generation of gaming.

I did get into a lot fun Download only Platformers I enjoyed across PC, PSN, XBLA, and Wiiware as well (Starring blobs and limbos and braids and meatboys and stick figure gravity games and caves and bittrips and pixeljunks, etc.). I've listed them before in SW, and it's a lot so I'll just stick to my above answer.

Toodles System Wars.

in terms of pure platformers, id have to go with super mario galaxy. the shift to space made for all these great uses of gravity (while keenly avoiding the most obvious one, slow floaty jumping, which would have been terrible). however, the space setting along with the motion controls worked really well with the eclectic nature of the series too. not only was the space junk and range of galaxies all over the place, the different methods of control were really good for pacing. its hard to argue with that level design.

i still really need to play super meat boy though.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is by far my favorite Platformer this gen, and one of my overall favorite games of the gen tbh. It's got the perfect mix of nostalgia and new, accessibility with challenge, and it just reeks of retro quality

The best ones are without a doubt:

Super Mario Galaxy/Super Mario Galaxy 2- I put both of these together because Galaxy introduces an innovative concept and Galaxy 2 perfects it. Galaxy 2 ignores the events that took place in Galaxy, and for good reason: no one gives a crap about the events that take place in a Mario game. It isn't so much that Galaxy 2's concept is worthy of a sequel, as it is the same concept as before. What makes Galaxy 2 worthy of being a true sequel, and the greatest 3D platformer ever made is how it perfects the genre, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the remade level of Super Mario 64, where nostalgia takes over you, but you quickly realize just how far Galaxy 2 has taken the genre that Mario 64 pioneered back in 1996.

Mirror's Edge- It fully immerses you in the body of a character. That's what makes Mirror's Edge one of the greatest games of this gen. It isn't a game about thinking, it's about letting go and just cutting loose. When I clear my mind, my Mirror's Edge runs are flawless. Some people complain about the level design, but those people are stuck overanalyzing things instead of doing what the designers wanted you to do: just jump. It's a wonderful game and DICE's crowning achievement.

Klonoa- It's a full-remake of the PS1 cIassic sold at a bargain price and it's still better than the majority of platformers out there. It nicely ties in sharp gameplay that pioneered the 2.5D design long before the stale Mario 3D Land arrived and manages to fuse it with plot and character. There is literal story progression in Klonoa. And that puts it ahead of any of Nintendo's 2D platformers. The story and world may be childish, but expert design and the desire to further along our feelings for these characters through that design makes Klonoa both one of the greatest PS1 games ever and one of the best platformers remade for this generation.

I've played Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. They were all great, but none came even remotely close to how jaw droppingly fantastic Rayman Origins is!

-None of the others can boast controls as smooth, responsive, or quick.

-None of the others can boast level design as superbly thought out, tight, and brilliant.

-None of the others used exploration to as strong a point.

-None of the others boast the quality in visuals.

-None of the others have a score as charming and consistantly brilliant.

Yoshi's Island was my favourite platformer for the past 16 years, but Rayman Origins is undeniably better in my books. The pinnacle of the genre.

There are plenty of great platformers this gen. SMG is by far the best though. That game was masterfully crafted.

I like LBP a lot, but I often just put it in its own category. I don't really like it for being a platformer as much as I like it for the other things it does.

3D - Mirror's Edge, it's one of the most flat out immersive games, like, ever, it looks beautiful, it feels fluid and smooth to play, the sound design is incredible, it's just an all round brilliant game. 2D - Super Meat Boy, it's just so damn good. The game has a great sense of humour in general, a charming art style and the controls are pretty much second to none, it makes dying over and over again for half an hour actually fun, and that's saying something.

Super Mario Galaxy by a long shot.

My friend called me the day it got reviewed at IGN, telling me it got a 9.7, and after waiting for a new console Mario game ever since Sunshine, it persuaded me to instantly pick up my phone and start calling stores. Wii was hard to find at that time, and I called about a dozen stores before finding a Gamestop location that had 1 Wii in stock, and a copy of Super Mario Galaxy. I rushed to the store, bought the console, bought the game, and played it for the next week. I loved every second of the game, and it resonates very nicely in my mind. The soundtrack is absolutely stunning, and the gameplay is nothing short of genre defining and revolutionary. I usually go for more mature themed video games overall, but I am proud to say that I love Nintendo 1st party games. I think they are one of, if not the most talented development studios as a whole in the industry. It takes a truly great game to be child friendly, bright in colors and themed with happiness, and still bring me down to my knees in praise.

I have Super Mario Galaxy 2, but admittedly, I haven't gotten very far in it. It just doesn't have the wow factor that the first Galaxy had. I'll get around to completing it some day, but Galaxy 1 was the game that did it first, and it should be recognized for doing so.

I beat Donkey Kong Country Returns co-op, and that was pretty damn fun. My friend and I got pretty pissed at each other a few times, because he thinks he is really good at games, and I do too, so neither of us wanted to be the one to **** up. It was more of a lets get this done approach, and the game can get pretty challenging in parts, but we pretty much smashed through it with very few deaths.

I was gonna buy Rayman Origins today, but I decided to pass on it and instead reserve Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii which releases on April 6th, 2012. First of all, the game wasn't even supposed to release in North America, but there was some sort of petition of some sort that convinced Nintendo to release it here in the states, and I heard at one point that it was Gamestop exclusive (which is where I reserved it today), but I'm not 100% on that. Anyways, based on the fact that it wasn't supposed to come here to begin with, paired with the fact that it might be Gamestop exclusive, I'm just not sure how long it will be available for, and how many copies will be available. I'm not normally one to pre-order games, but I am not going to miss out on this game like I missed out on Metroid Prime Trilogy.

lol I love the little dance he does at the end. I really should buy this game. That treasure chase level is not the typical level sty1e for the game is it? The speedy cart track like **** This game looks a bit more like old donkey kongs in a sense than other platformers, which I love. Is the co-op the same as the SP and is it good?

Super Mario Galaxy and Little Big Planet 1/2.

I still have to get Rayman Origins, SMG2 (gotta finish 1 first :P) and Sonic Generations.

Sonic 4 Ep. 1 was alright, looking forward to Ep 2.

No, the treasure level isn't the only level style for the game. You unlock one of those levels in each of the 10 worlds. The normal levels are standard platformer fair. They have more to explore than any other 2D platformer this gen and play mind boggelingly smooth for the time trial challenges (and with a speed that sonic would be proud of). The Co-op is pretty much identical to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's a fun little diversion, but the single player is 10x better.

And perhaps the best thing of all is that you can run up freaken walls and even ceilings!

I am noticing that co-op can be very hard to do right in platformers. I think I prefer DKC's old way of one person at a time but you can swap out or auto swap when you die. DKCR is definitely fun, but it is WAY harder to play with someone and in a sense less fun. I personally had plenty of fun watching the person and waiting for my turn (as its usually rather often) in DKC1-3.

The Galaxy games revived my interest in gaming, and the Sonic games were easily the best ones I've played since Sonic 3 & Knuckles. DK was ok, but I've never been a fan of him and his games.

It is a fantastic platformer and I actually hold it in higher estime than Galaxy 2 which is far superior to the first Galaxy, but it is not considered this gen as you say and Rayman Origins, in my opinion, is still miles ahead... I can't wait to buy it a second time for my 3DS to take it wherever I go

wait, Donkey kong land for those ports of DKC on the gba?

and to be clear I wasn't counting ports. As far as original platformers go it pretty much is the best we've had in a long time

Yeah as far as original ones go it might be. I really enjoyed the MP in NSMBDS though :P.

Both Mario Galaxy games because they just are out of this world with gravity and spherical worlds.

Super Mario Galaxy 1. I hated it for about 3 years, and frequently considered trading it in. I tried it again sometime before galaxy 2's release and I absolutely loved it. It is clearly the best platformer this gen.

SMG 2, on the other hand, got rid of the larger hub world, the library, and the whole outer space theme, which was a bit disapointing. Also it was kinda awkward how they got rid of the angel person who talks to star people in favor of a really obese star who looks like he ate his family. But the overall gameplay was still top notch.

Best is Super Mario Game of the Forever 2. Best game I've played in the last 10 years hands down.
Other great titles include

Kirby's Epic Yarn
Super Mario Galaxy 1
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Super Meat Boy
Bit Trip Runner
Lost Winds and Winter of the Melodia
Donkey Kong country Returns
Sonic Rush/Sonic Rush Adventure
Rayman Origins

Still need to play Sonic Colours and Generations
