My top 5 of 2011:
1) Portal 2 - as close to perfect as a game can possibly be for what they were trying to achieve, a true masterpiece in pretty much every form.
2) Deus Ex Human Revolution - lives up to the legacy of the original game and some, but at the same time retaining it's own style and personality, really really good.
3) Bastion - one of the best examples of video games writing and storytelling ever seen, a beautiful game.
4) TESV: Skyrim - how a game can possibly have this much great content and still be polished enough to be playable on two out of the three platforms it was released on is, frankly, beyond me.
5) Minecraft - the best example of a true indie success story - I don't too much like the direction they've been taking it in recently, but the core game is unique, innovative and damn addictive.
And my top 5 anticipated of 2012:
1) Bioshock Infinite - a sequel to Bioshock that's actually being made by Ken Levine and Irrational? Count me in, any day of the week.
2) Mass Effect 3 - I still trust that the ME/KoTOR half of Bioware Edmonton has enough talent not to **** this up, probably unlike the DA half, and what we've heard so far suggests that they're going for a nice middle ground, in terms of gameplay, structure, teh RPG elementzz, between the first and second game.
3) GTA V - It's a GTA game, man! But seriously, they could go in some rather interesting directions with this, a series which is essentially a parody of modern culture like this has a great deal of material to parody lately, and that's awesome.
4) Max Payne 3 - I for one actually love what they've shown off so far, the whole 'leave the country, sink into a whirlpool of depression and loneliness' concpet behind the story and the updated gameplay, from what I can tell, seems brilliant.
5) Prey 2 - a completely different direction from the first game, which is good because a) the first game, hint hint, wasn't very good, and b) the new direction, ie. cyberpunk bounty hunting/ free running in an open world city on an alien planet, is completely amazing.
