When I say historical games, I don't necessarily mean games that are completely historical accurate. Its OK if you mention games with an alternative timelines or with historical inaccuracies like assassins creed and so on. However, I would greatly appreciate it if you could mention games set in time periods other than world war 2, since the gaming market is already heavily saturated with world war 2 games.

1. Basically all total wars, especially attila total war, fall of the samurai and empire/napoleon total war.

What I like most about total war is how you can create your own timeline and recreate historical battles.

2. Darkest of days

Its a great game, but heavily underrated. Its about traveling back in time and keeping an eye on history.

3. Mount and blade viking conquest, the game is based upon the events after the death of the infamous viking Ragnar Lodbrok, you might remember him from the tv series Vikings.

4. Ryse Son of Rome

Sure, the gameplay was very mediocre and the game itself was quite a linear experience. However, I still enjoyed the game quite a lot , mostly thanks due to the fact that ryse was set in an fictional roman setting.

5. Last but not least, I also liked to mention knights of honor, its a very old game from 2004. However, still one of my favorite strategy games. Its like total war, but with a real time campaign map and a lot more stuff to do on the campaign map. Seriously, can someone tell paradox to do a sequel on this game, I don't care about civilization 6 "the money milking project", I just want knights of honor 2.

No WW2? Hmmm, here are my top 3 then:

1. World in Conflict

Going to start my another walkthrough after finishing Bioshock. The game takes place in alternate timeline, where negotiations fail after cold war and World War 3 begins. This is easily the best World War 3 game out there. Gameplay, story, soundtrack, characters, it's all there.

2. Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven

It takes place during 30s and focuses on mob war. Atmosphere is great and story is cool as well. Gameplay is bloody and violent. Sound effects and lack of quick saves also make things more intense. One of the best third person shooters.

3. Medieval 2: Total War

My favorite game in the franchise. It's my favorite time period and this game does it justice. Atmosphere is strong, there are variety of different units, gameplay is addictive, and antagonist is hard as balls to defeat. The game perfectly captures grittiness of medieval times.

LA Noire, Ryse. Bioshock 1, alternate reality but still some history in there. Surely there is more, but this is what comes to mind now

Ryse was fun considering it's setting but I hardly feel it's historical, at least not in any way I feel we really learn or can gain all that much about the times through our experience with the games.

I think the AC series might be one of my favorite, not very historical or wouldn't really consider it one beyond it's use of historical figures in its writing, story, and characters, and molding it to fit with modern conspiracy theory beliefs about secret societies that rule the world and whatnot. As far as the art designs of the cities go, they all just started to feel too similar regardless of the setting.

@Alucard_Prime: yeah, LA Noire was a really great depiction of the 40s Los Angeles, good call there, the main story really fits the time they set. And they just really nailed the setting, look, and art design of what they were going for. As for Bioshock, I'd not really see as historical except an excellent lesson of the ideology of Ayn Rand through Andrew Ryan. I also loved the art deco design of the whole game.

I'm feel it warrants making a separate post just for WW2 games. There's really two I felt like talking about, Call of Duty, and Close Combat.

Call of Duty. I enjoyed this series since the beginning, never missed a game until later when I fell out of love for the series. The older WW2 games were always fun, a bit uninspired except for war movies themselves; not to sell it short, I wanted those games to get really gritty like war movies were becoming. And we got that, be it a hot beach landing like in Saving Private Ryan, the 101st Airborne drop like out of Band of Brothers, or even many Enemy At the Gates inspired scenes like the crossing of the Volga River or the failed attempt to capture Red Square, or even the fountain scene in the movie used in World At War. They really did the best job with this genre, but it became such an oversaturated genre. And their inspiration was rather limited to what came out of movies.

Close Combat RTS series - this might be my favorite WW2 series. I loved this because you really got a feel for what each army had to fight with and you really got a feel for that when you got to requisition units, check out what they had, and through experience get a feel for how effective their equipment was and what kinds of tactics had to be used and whatnot. There's so many campaigns that take you to different stages of the war. Overall, I just love it as a series. The games are now being published by Matrix games, only sold on their website, and aren't cheap despite being dated. But, they've supposedly made substantial improvements to the AI behavior and various glitches that the original published games had. If I had more money to burn, this game is a must for the PC. Mainly the one I thought was the best was the third one, Close Combat III: The Russian Front, though as has been republished under the name Close Combat: Cross of Iron. Curious if it has been updated too for Windows 10 support, not sure about that. I think there were problems back between the jumps from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Not sure if any issues were resolved. I really wish though they'd sell this through places like GOG or Steam so we get better support and competitive pricing.

AC: Unity as far as educational historical goes outside of the fictional aspects of course. I learned a lot about the French Revolution for sure and it interested me enough to research the period. It was also interesting to visually see a 1:1 scale of historically recreated landmarks.

What I have been waiting for however is a good ancient Egyptian game. It's such a fascinating era and certainly would be very visually appealing set piece to see a reconstruction of Ramses time, maybe even base the game on real stories from the period. Sadly, most such games in that setting have been point and click games on PC. It's an entire period that the gaming industry seems to ignore. Maybe AC will take it on.

@lamprey263 AC was the first thing that came to my mind as well, and I especially agree with that art design felt somewhat mundane and similar as the series moved forward. The story also lost cohesion when Desmond was no longer in the series, thus leaving itself with a cool idea, but no real direction on how to give it form. Still, I look forward to the next game because the series still shows a lot of promise and room to grow.

L.A. Noire also gets a firm nod as well. I would also like to say Dishonored but that's more of a game with an historical feel (Victorian London during the black plague) vs an historical setting I suppose.

Red Dead Redemption is an interesting sandbox wild west game that had a beautiful world and cool game play aspects(slowed down bullet time).

Fallout 3,4, new Vegas: A very interesting what if the world plunged into utter nuclear destruction during the 1950's. The futuristic world and especially the music build a very strong post 1950's history/future timeline.

@lamprey263: Yeah for Bioshock it was more about just liking that setting, the time period it represented.....basically how you said you liked the deco and art. Love that stuff, and Bioshock did it well with how atmospheric it felt. Ryse 's distinct art style is pretty cool and I just love the medieval time period in general.

Dishonored has a cool setting too I like that.

I like how the metal gear games mixes a bit of history and other facts in the codec conversations. The ones in metal gear solid 5 didn't have the same impact as the other games.

Easily Mafia City of lost heaven

Set in 1930. greatest storyline in any game ever, the atmosphere, realistic driving, fantastic shooting.

Its imo best third person action/shooter game ever. so much better than todays shitty movie games like uncharted and last of us.

One of the main reasons I enjoy the Assassins Creed series is that it allows me to run around in a different time frame. Nearly every AC game is set in a different time and/or place so I keep playing them.

For Honor is another that could potentially become a favorite. The gameplay is solid but I need to play the campaign to decide if it becomes a favorite.

Empire was a really fun game to play, but I think napoleon is far more polished and far less buggy than empire. However, artillery is amazing in empire.

I loooooooooooooove historical games

  • Age of Empires 1: You go from the stone age all the way to ancient civilisations
  • Empire Earth: same as with AoE only you can go all the way up to modern days
  • Company of Heroes: WW2, maily set in western and eastern Europe
  • Cossacks: 17th-18th century european warfare
  • Assassin's Creed: The first one is set during the crusades, but I like all of the historical parts of AC
  • Medal of Honor and Call of Duty series: They may be hollywood style over the top adventures, but they offer different perspectives into ww2
  • Red Orchestra and Rising Storm series: A really gritty and realistic look into the European Front of WW2, soon to hit Vietnam.

+ many games I saw mentioned here as well as Call of Juarez, GTA Vice City, Bioshock... and I'm looking forward to the upcoming Mafia 3 and Battlefield this month :DDD

Napoleon: Total War

It is basically a videogame Biography of Napoléon Bonaparte. It beautifully presents his triumphs, lows and eventual fall at the battle of Waterloo. Spoiler!

It approached with an unusual level of historical accuracy, which the game was actually criticized for as the campaign had linear goals to compensate. It's a game that isnt about the battles or the revolution of the French Empire, but it was also about Napoleon as a person: his ideologies, his ambition, his leadership and his sense in pride.

@R4gn4r0k: Yeah Massive Entertainment. The studio is going downhill ever since Ubisoft bought them. The Division was going to be an MMO, Ubisoft dumbed down the game.

Before Ubisoft, with Sierra Entertainment and Vivendi Games they used to make masterpieces because of more creative freedom; Ground Control, Ground Control 2, World in Conflict, Soviet Assault Expansion, these were all wonderful games.

Death of Sierra Entertainment was worst thing happened to game industry last gen. What a shitty gen.

@Cloud_imperium: We also saw the death of Ensemble last gen :(

TBH RTS and RTT were gutted last gen, remember the move towards consoles ?

And now so many devs are back on PC... hmmm. Maybe they shouldn't have cut so many genres?

For massive: at least the Division is a step up from them working on AC side content. But that's the thing again: ever since Ubisoft owned them, they never let them make a RTS or RTT. The big publishers still don't care what people really want.

Yeah we lost a lot of great developers last gen and it's impossible to not feel their absence in the industry. I'm happy that that late 90s stuff is coming back this gen though.

The Division was step up from Far Cry and Assassin's Creed for Massive but their true vision was killed. As I mentioned before, The Division was originally going to be a full fledged PC MMO, a very ambitious project.

Ubisoft dumbed down the game to the point that it ended up being online shooter that couldn't live up to its hype. Even if Ubisoft allows Massive to develop another RTS/RTT it won't be as good as could've been. I expect them to cut corners due to limited budget or lack of talent that left the studio.

I think only SEGA can do Ground Control and World in Conflict justice, as they are willing to spend money on PC strategy games. Total War games have pretty high production values. SEGA should've bought Massive Entertainment when their assets were up for sale.

All games set in World War, fav one being Medal of Honor 2

All AC games, fav one being Assassin's Creed II

i love historical settings and i can pretty much say one of the main reasons that i play AC games is because they have historical settings.

@Zidaneski: I've heard great things about that game. It's turn based strategy right? Is it only on PSP?

@turtlethetaffer: grid-Turn-based and only on PSP. Its no FF Tactics but its a game that I'll remember as one of Level-5's best games.

I was flying some crazy missions blowing up german supply lines in really old planes.

That game was so deep so deep PC for life PC for life.

Easily Mafia City of lost heaven

Set in 1930. greatest storyline in any game ever, the atmosphere, realistic driving, fantastic shooting.

Its imo best third person action/shooter game ever. so much better than todays shitty movie games like uncharted and last of us.

I'm gonna agree with this choice.
