What are your top 5 games this year? I'll rate mine descending from 5 to my personal GOTY.

Also let me know your thoughts on 2015, was it an improvement on 2014?

Were in December so I dont think any more big releases are due out.

My Top 5

5- Cities Skylines - A real timesinker of a game, I lost pretty much all of April this year tinkering with my Cities, there's so much to do but it never feels like a chore.

4 - Just Cause 3 - Could be higher on the list when I've played it more, only have about 8 hours playtime so far, however I'm loving it. I love the way you feel like a super hero being able to jump from building to building, glide, grapple hook to anything.

3 - Undertale - A classic RPG old school style with wonderful characters that grow on you fast. The battle system is turn based but with a unique twist were the focus is on reasoning with the monsters to avoid conflict.

2 - Life Is Strange - This actually beats all of Telltales efforts for me (I'm a big Telltale fan) it was frustrating having to wait a couple month between each episode, but it was worth the wait. The decisions you make are pretty heavy and have a decent impact on the story. I had to replay once I finished to make different choices. The games has great characters great voice acting and a fascinating story.

1 - Fallout 4 - Its not without its shortcomings and disappointments they are well known. Common complaints have been iffy performance on all platforms, dated engine, ugly visuals, dumb AI, same old Bethedsa bugs that have been present for years, dumbed down perks/skills, dialogue system limited etc etc.

Despite all of that, Fallout 4 has been the most fun I've had all year in gaming. The world is lots of options and the settlement builder was a really nice addition. The main story line picks up towards the end becoming pretty interesting and there are some worthwhile side quests. The gun play was actually half decent, unlike previous Fallout games.

So my personal GOTY is Fallout 4

There has been more games in 2015 I've enjoyed than in previous years recently, its been a good year.

  4. Steins;Gate (Vita)
  5. Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 (with PTE 2.1 mod)

What i think will be majority top 5 from research.

  • 1. Bloodborne
  • 2. The Witcher 3
  • 3. Super Mario Maker

Life is Strange, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Splatoon will be a hot ones also. The others kinda fall short in certain ways that keep them from being epic.

No order:

Dying Light

Halo 5

Rise of the Tomb Raider

definitely those three are up there, although none of them were truly exceptional, Halo would've been the closest thing to that...

I'm not sure if it'd be a good idea to mention Rare Replay since technically that's not a new game, or rather these aren't new games.

I've also enjoyed Evolve despite the overwhelming hate and I guess I could put Batman: Arkham Knight there but at the very last position.

I hadn't played Ori, Phantom Pain, Life is Strange, Black Ops, Forza 6 (outside the demo) so I can't comment on those.

Hard to compile it into a list personally:

1. Splatoon: Lots of fun, I was honestly surprised at how much fun I was having with the game despite all of its flaws. Really good shooter and has real potential of opening Nintendo to new ideas and new places.

2. Rocket League: Unexpected too. I kind of fell into the hype for this game with everyone praising it and decided to impulse buy it. Haven't regretted it since. Its controls on PC with keyboard/mouse are poopy, but I somehow, "mastered" it in a way and had a lot of fun with peeps like Champ and Illmatic.

3. Yoshi's Woolly World: Surprise hit too. I was sad to see it get a six here and thought it would be kind of doody, but honestly it was pretty hard especially when you try to find all the collectibles. It's a lot of fun even with friends and the charm is overwhelming.

4. Fallout 4: I know this game is disappointing or even trash to others and I can completely see why. Yet, it has begun to grow on me. When I played New Vegas, my first Fallout game, I had assumed it was the general formula that was used in Fallout 3 and the one that would be used in 4, but unfortunately it wasn't. I realize now how even with the lack of characterization and story NV had, it had more depth than the characters/factions in FO4. Even with a ton of flaws and steps backwards from NV, I've definitely seen an improvement in voice-acting and their attempts at characterization, the companions are way more interesting, but the lack of various factions like Caesar's Legion, the NCR, Mr. House, the different raider groups, not just generic raiders, the Families, Fiends, Powder Gangers, etc. is disappointing. The gun-play is WAY better, but VATS is doody now and has some issues like being right in front of a guy and not having much of a chance of hitting or completely missing somehow. The story is starting to get on a roll after being completely forgettable for a while, but it doesn't seem as good as Peter Brown made it out to be yet. I haven't gotten totally sick of Bethesda's formula yet and so even with so many evident problems, it has still been fun for me.

5. Super Mario Maker: A wonderful game, that gives you so many options. Only problem is I'm not very good at making courses lol and other courses are usually torturous for me. Despite this, the game is funny, has a lot of depth, and is a great way of celebrating 30 years of Mario.

I know my list is kind of limited in scope, but in truth I haven't played many games that came out this year yet. Been playing a lot of games from last year or earlier like The Evil Within, Alien: Isolation, New Vegas, etc. However, I will put a list of honorable mentions and probables of my top 5 when I get to play them.

Honorable mentions: The Witcher 3, (have it, but haven't played it yet, got it last month I believe and still really need to get into it, I'm sure when I play it, it will be high on the list). Star Wars: Battlefront, despite not being what I wanted it to be is still gorgeous and actually kind of fun. I hope they change the price of the season pass or get rid of it as a whole and just give us the maps and modes for free, but EA is EA so... Anyways, it does a really good job of capturing the feel of Star Wars and is fun in short bursts. Bloodborne should be high as well when Christmas hits, as it more Dark Souls goodness which has gotten a little shaky with me, but I'm not sick of it yet. Xenoblade Chronicles X is also a high contender when that rolls out, should be a great Christmas game to play with an amazing open-world.

EDIT: Oh man, I completely forgot MGS:V! That game is probably at my top 3. The game is so solid, the gameplay a blast, and I actually kind of liked the story, but explaining the virus was like explaining the force in Star Wars. Unnecessary and makes it sound stupid. I get what Kojima was trying to get at it with themes and symbols and yadda yadda, but it failed there. I hated the repeat missions and the bland side-ops, which are even more boring without Quiet (patch hurry up pls). The open world was somewhat disappointing, but still a really good game this year.

  1. MGSV
  2. Bloodborne
  3. Every
  4. Thing
  5. Else

Plenty of good stuff this year, but only those top two are on lock for me. Everything else is a toss up.

And yeah, I definitely had a better time with new stuff in 2015 than 2014. Last year was mainly backlog games.

1. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Almost flawless, I think I may have cried at the end.

2. Fallout 4 - A flawed masterpiece. Will probably be #1 once the mods come out.

3. Nothing else, video games are expensive.

There are already some mods for it, Nexus Mod manager now supports Fallout 4, some mods are ok some are garbage. There are some mods that fix flaws in the game like the dialogue mod that actually gives information on what your going to say. You also have custom eyes mods for AI, so they dont look as soulless and empty as normal Bethesda AI. Then there are a few mods just the fun, like the multiple companion mod, combined with any NPC can be a follower mod you can walk the wasteland with an army of wild dogs as your followers.

Good post it was a good read, I agree with your thoughts on Fallout 4, exactly my thoughts about it too.

I've played a lot of games this year, more than usual due to being off work for a while with appendicitis and surgery complications, however I dont have a Wii U yet, looking at the Wii U games listed in yours and other peoples lists I want one. Might treat myself at Christmas if I have money left over.

1. Divinity OS Enhanced Edition - One of the best RPGs in the last decade or two made even better (for the most part).

2. Cities:Skylines - Best city simulator since Simcity 4 even without mods, but the built in support means most deficiencies could be corrected soon after launch.

3. Freedom Planet - (If I cheat and use the Wii U release date) Basically what a Sega Saturn 2D Sonic should have been, great replayablity and production values. Bonus points for not "feeling" like an Indie game (Feels like a genuine big budget 2D platformer from the mid to late 90's.)

4. Pillars of Eternity - Got a lot better and less unwieldy after the 2.0 patch, is now a decent modernized infinity engine style RPG

5. Tales of Zestiria (PC) - A solid port and strong first PC effort of the latest title of a venerable console-only franchise. Unfortunately not that great a Tales game, combat is a bit too chaotic and enemies too HP spongy as well as some frustrating camera issues and a too-open world. IMO of course.

@thehig1:

The Fallout 4 Nexus isn't even close to Skyrim's or New Vegas's. I want the big texture overhauls, guns, perk mods, and gameplay changes. None of which are easy or even possible without the CK. Until then, I'm licking the vanilla ice cream!

5. Tales From The Borderlands

Hate not having Bloodborne and Rocket League in there.

@wizard: didnt say it was, but they have made a decent start so far.

There are some graphical overhauls as well, not the level of skyrim but they have made a good start considering the game not been out long.

As of right now:

  1. Bloodborne
  2. Witcher 3
  3. Mario Maker
  4. Her Story
  5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D

Trying to play catch up with games released this year. I've beaten a lot of games, but I wait for new releases to drop in price.

I still want/need to try out:

MGSV

Xenoblade

Undertale

Rocketleague

SOMA

Hotline Miami 2

Before I can make an informed decision.

@thehig1: After 32 hours of Cities Skylines last month, I felt the opposite. There wasn't too much left for me to do except cosmetics of my city. I reached 100,000+ citizens, unlocked all buildings, and didn't have many problems. The game became a spreadsheet manager and I was just sitting there running it in the background waiting for numbers to increase/decrease. It was fun at the out start, but the game quickly dropped to just an honorable mention when 5 of my hours was idling the game to allow commercial space to grow to unlock the Eden Project.

@TheSeptopus: I got to 50 hours of skylines with no as much done.

I don't play games like that so often so I'm probably slower a progessing with in it.

2.) Halo 5

3.) Splatoon

4.) Bloodborne

Hoping to get to The Witcher, Batman and Fallout at the beginning of next year before Uncharted 4 and Quantum Break, but I doubt it with a newborn in the house! FML
