With the latest ima entries we have noticed they have switched to better processors and graphic chips. Apple also says that their market share is in increasing and analysts of the market expect a 30% increase. How viable do you think the imac computer will become in gaming?

It has Steam now, also a bunch of other download services. What do you all think? Are devs going to start paying more attention to Apple at this rate?

I would never want to play games on a computer that can't be upgraded to stay relevant, but that's just me.

The problem is that with all the boom on Macs in recent years they still possess only 5% of the worldwide market share. Steam was supposed to change that, but after a short burst the momentum died out. Most pcgames never make it to Macs or the are released long time after pc versionss What's worse..OSX is really badly written for gaming, which is why on the same Mac the performance in games in higher in Windows than in OSX. Add to this the fact that not only the GPU selection is far worse (and the newest cards are rarely released on Macs soon), but the hardware is a lot more expensive too.

If you can stand paying more for much inferior hardware you can game on Mac, as long as you use bootcamp to install Windows.

As a mac owner i feel i am reasonably qualified to say that Mac gaming is an embarrassment. Browsing through the Mac section on Steam is a bad joke.

While this is certainly true, more and more developers are making games for OSX. It really helps a lot that Valve is on board. Even though they're aren't many games available now, any future release by Valve will be OSX compatible and that's great.

30% increase? I assume what they mean is from 5% market share to (roughly) 7%. It's still peanuts in terms of market share, and Apple will have to do a lot more to compete with, let alone dislodge, windows.

It's not as bad it has been in the past, but it's nothing to gloat about either. It does however have support of Valve and Blizzard which is good enough for me since I'm not much of a PC gamer.

I have an i7 imac 27 inch, a mbp and i7 pc, (typing this on ubuntu though) and if your primary goal is gaming best not to buy a mac, but a mac certainly can game.

thing to know is most the games are ports that use cider to emulate direct x, and this means your frame rate wont be as good. best to bootcamp w7 and even though you dont have access to the latest video card drivers.

still if you have a mac and nothing esle, it will game fine.

As long as the MAC can run the game, then there is no problem with gaming on a MAC. Only bad thing is that macs aren't upgradeable so once games become unplayable you would have to buy a whole new MAC to play the latest and greatest games.

I just want to point out this, Macs are PCs, except with a massive premium, an OS based off a free kernal specification, and completely controlled hardware so you have to go to mac to get expensive repairs.

macs are a complete waste of time sorry

MP3 devices are a totally useless device. Why limit yourselves when you could just have one device that does it all?

My phone - and why would accept anything less?
Plus Pandora, in my mind, makes an MP3 player obsolete.

If I were looking for a phone and a media player, that would certainly not be my first choice. Choosing that phone is choosing to accept less... And saying media players are useless though is totally short-sighted, and displays a selfish opinion on technology.

The best Android phone on the market is the best phone on the market, IMO. Plus I just do not see a point in owning a separate device to do what my phone can already do -- especially if its made by Apple.

A year ago a buddy and I both deployed overseas. He had a mac book and I didn't. Our specs were similar but he paid $1800 and I paid $800. His machine struggled with Borderlands while mine handled it on high with no problems. And his temperature software, which I downloaded to check for accuracy, stated that his machine was running over 400 degrees. He said "See! No PC could run that hot and not break. Mac is better." I'm sure that number isn't totally accurate, but mine never went over 120 degrees at any point. He did need to run Windows which may have hurt performance, but I cannot justify spending an extra $1000 on that cute little apple on the back of my machine.

Right, you don't see a point in owning a separate device to do what your phone can do. What about the millions of individuals who don't have smart phones? Do you really think media players are useless? And Apple hate is so boring now, because it's very common in the gaming world. The less you know, I guess..

laptops are different, its a fixed system everywhere, mac desktops on the other hand still aren't usually easily repairable by and end user, and I havn't seen any PC really match the premium of a mac yet, and even though there are PC's with the premium, there are also PC's without the premium, all mac's come with the premium which is the problem. I bought a think pad 3 years ago and have loved it ever since, it replaced a mac book, when i went to upgrade I shopped around, I could have gotten a MBP for 1700 at 15" or I could have gotten my t500 with better specs at 950... oh and it came with four year warranty without paying extra, it was the best laptop I've ever gotten

Other "individuals" situation has absolutely ZERO influence on what I believe about a certain product or company. I really could not care any less than I do now about other "individuals" and their lack of tech.

I'm no dedicated follower either, one that must have the next and best thing. I was up for a new contract so I dumped my old Droid 1 and chose (over the iPhone 4) a Droid 2 Global.
And Apple hate is very acceptable now, because some of us have to try and impart sense onto the mindless masses.

Well other people should have an impact on your view of the landscape. Actively choosing to dismiss them is, as I called it before, selfish. That doesn't do anyone any good but yourself, so what's the point of sharing? And I'm surprised you went with another Droid after the first. You're a rare breed, indeed.

What are you talking about? lol musicalmac
I'm talking how shortly after Steam was out on Mac there was a quite big burts of devs annoucing mac versions of their games. Now it all died out and barely is any better than it was before it. The hype died and people realized the most they can count on is 5% increase in sales, which to some isn't worth it.

The one good thing Steam did is to promote selling multiple OS versions of a game in one package. That's great thing for consumers, altough it means trouble for all the companies who lived from making Mac ports.

That's a far cry from Steam having a major effect on Apple's market share.

Phones (and touchscreen devices) are big and heavy though. It's not a problem if you're sitting or walking, but for working out they're pretty horrible not just in weight/size, but also user comfort (no physical buttons mean you need to take the device out everything you want to change the track, the touchscreen is horrible for sweaty hands, and for running in rain or in below zero degrees C temperatures) and battery life.

Of course Apple's solution for small mp3 players is horrible, but that's besides the point. Plenty of people can find many uses for small mp3 players, especially since they are so cheap. Why not use the best device for the job if it won't cost you arm and leg?

I guess I worded it wrong. It came out as total market share, while I've meant the ammount of gamers (Steam statistics and stuff). came out really jumbed. Sorry :)

But i am also gathering that getting a MAC is a bad idea, especially if you want to game on it to an extent. would these specs be trash for gaming off of whats available on Steam i7 2.93 GHZ processor 8GB Ram 1 Terabyte HDD 1GB ATI Radeon 5750 27 inch screen

He mentions 30% increase, not increase to 30%. Which would be an increase to ~13% market share. Which I still don't see happening to be quite honest, unless MS produces another colossal flop like Vista, which I can't see them doing.

I love my mac, but if I want to game I would mostly game on my PC (well mostly PS3, but assuming we're talking about PC games).

EA does a lot of developing on Apple platforms, believe it or not. EA executives have been on stage with Jobs more than once during big announcements. And Blizzard games have always been available (since close to the beginning) on Apple's machines. The Valve thing, as I expected, was a little disappointing. They haven't quite gotten the performance thing right, yet...
