In my opinion this is a really bad and stupid move by microsoft. think about it the 360 pro is now at $350, $50 less expensive than the PS3 ($400). if they decide to release the "new 360" thats gonna add a lot to the price. lets take the current 360 which is at $350. the built in wi-fi and 1080p capabilities will no way cost less than $50. so the price of the new 360 is now $400 on level with the PS3. now if u then add the built in hd-dvd drive thats no way gonna cost anywhere less than $120 since the hd-dvd add on is $179 and standalone players are not less than $200. so this totals the xbox 360 pro at $520 and the elite at $620 and that isnt including the hdtv tuner they might put in(and these prices are discounted btw they are more realistically).

now at a $520 price point for the pro its $120 more expensive than the PS3. now think about it... it would be the most expensive console on the market just like the PS3 was when it launched, and what were the results... very low PS3 sales due to its high price. the same thing is going to happen to the 360 if microsoft goes with their plan. the reasosns the new 360 will sell a looooot less than the PS3 is because:

1. it is going to be much more expensive than the PS3

2. the PS3 would already have a strong, large and well-established game library by that time with many AAA titles (R&C, Uncharted, Haze, GT5, MGS4, Killzone 2)

3. the fact that in the article it says that "Though Blu-ray had been gaining an upper hand in the conflict" basically means people are getting more into blu-ray and prefer it over hd-dvd which would mean the general public would prefer buying a PS3 as a blu-ray player than the new 360 as an hd-dvd player.

This plan i assure you will be the painful death of microsoft and the rise and glory of Sony and the PS3!!!

What are your thoughts about Microsoft's plan?

screwed the early adopters like my self who had to buy a wireless networking tuner for the 360, good for new owners. i just wish MS would of done this right out of the box. but then again i guess 360 is all about options .

MS shouldnt have bashed Sony and then done the same. Copying is a staple in the this industry and thus isnt frowned upon, but hypocrasy is.

just so you know this is something being planned by Microsoft and Toshiba and theyr must likely going to go with it. If you read the last paragraph it says "Not bogus that, provided the HD-DVD/Blu-ray wars continue, an HD-DVD-equipped 360 will be released." That doesn't look like speculation to me. It's just a rumor. No one has confirmed it. Yet, I like how the cows are talking about it like it's really going to happen, and know what the exact outcome is going to be.

IF this does end up happening,it doesn't bother me a bit. At least they're adding features, instead of taking options away, unlike Sony.

I don't think it will add anything to price, if they just throw this feature into the Elite SKU.

Come on lets face it. The Elite has everything except one thing that it should have included and that's HD-DVD.

$449 will be the perfect price if you want a high definition DVD player in your X360.

loooool u really think it won't add to the price! r u crazy? of course it will add to the price and by that time the PS3 would probably be even cheaper! ur adding built in wi-fi, an hd-dvd drive and an hdtv tuner thats gonna add a minimum of $100 for sure. It even states in the article "If Toshiba and Microsoft can't make a HD-DVD-equipped console cheap enough to be attractive--or cool enough not to suffer from the console's widespread overheating problem--the next-gen console war could get a lot more interesting." this basically implies it will be very difficult to make the new 360 at a cheap price and probably will not happen, AND even if it is cheap no way will it be cheaper than the PS3 at that time!

Microsoft's just digging their own grave now! trust me 08 is PS3, 09 is PS3 and by 2010 analysts are all expecting PS3 to be the market leader even dominating the Wii. U all know it's coming. The war is already over...

ya this means its time for your pills son, you should always remember what the doctor told you when you start laughing uncontrollably, just take the pills they won't kill you... and these games most probably will be AAA since they are AAA franchises (except for killzone, and i forgot to mention FF13)

It's not like they are going to quit making the Pro and arcade versions. This is just a high end model. I see nothing wrong with it.

the built in wi-fi and 1080p capabilities will no way cost less than $50. so the price of the new 360 is now $400 on level with the PS3. now if u then add the built in hd-dvd drive thats no way gonna cost anywhere less than $120 since the hd-dvd add on is $179

1080p capabilites are already in 360 plus there are a couple games in 1080p. I don't know why people are saying that would cost any extra. The wifi doesn't cost $50 to add internally get real. Even the DS/PSP have wifi that isn't going to cost anything to manufacture. The internal HD-DVD drive will not cost more than $50 to manufacture either. They sell an external retail version for $179 so to manufacture that is no way costing that much. It would be no difference in price to manufacture than the internal version of the blu-ray in the PS3 on any of those items. So wait for an official anouncement on price before making bad guestimates.

This would be a very, very high end model. To have all these features tells me that the console will be very expensive, so expensive that I think Toshiba may put their label on it and describe it as "Xbox 360 compatible." Who knows. Toshiba really wants to win the format war and want to use Microsoft as an avenue into the living room.

As long as Microsoft doesn't start making games on HD DVD, I have no problem with it. If they did do that then they would be seriously segmenting their user base, and that would be a very bad thing.

More models? Holy cow. Microsoft and Sony are getting out of hand...How many Wii models are there? 1? Why do we need 15 different models, i'd say 3 would be be a golden number. All of them should include a built in Hardrive though, that was a dumb move by Microsoft to not include a HD in all their models.

Three models, One for the casual, one for the Hardcore, and then one for the super hardcore.

You're making some stupid assumptions. If they're gonna launch a new high end model only it is going to have built in HDDVD, Wifi, ect. NOT every model. They definitely should do it because having a bunch of periphereals is retarded and there's gotta be a market for it.... prolly would be the version I'd get myself.

And hell if PS3 costs $400 with everything built in why would 360 be any different. I mean as it stands $400 for a PS3 or $350 for a 360 is a no brainer on value. Blu-ray, Wifi, bigger HDD, reliable hardware..... for $50.

You have a point there , if the 360 has an hd dvd drive , wi-fi and hdtv tuner it would be more expensive then the PS3.Thats why you buy a PS3 its overall better.(The Games are Coming and the PSN is getting better)

As long as they don't discontinue the pro and continue to create ad-ons for anything that's not on this new version, it's not a stupid mistake for them assuming of course that they don't make it cost more than the Ps3. Anyways, it looks like Microsoft finally decided that they need to take more serious action to make sure HD-DVD wins. If Blu-Ray loses, that's the end of the Ps3 and the entire play station franchise. It would also result in such bad losses by Sony that the whole company could very possibly go under and it would almost certainly result to and end of both their gaming and movie divisions. Microsoft knows how much they have to gain and how little they have to lose by putting their recourses in to making sure Blu ray losses.

I think MSoft are being retarded. STOP SPAMMING US WITH SKUS! I know they want gamers to have an option, and to upgrade and stuff. But It's lame. I think MSofts multiply skus are better than sonys though. Sonys skus are set in stone. At least with MSoft, you can upgrade at a later time if you want too.

BRING BACK ONE SKU!

But at the same time, this is the one thing Microsoft just hasn't been able to achieve, no matter how much money they've spent. Even after the exclusivity deal for Paramount and Dreamworks got pushed through, Blu-Ray sales did not come even close to falling under HD-DVD. I think a big reason MS really want to do this is because they're frustrated by the fact that they're failing to stop blu-ray so far.
