TC, you should try to encourage discussion in some way. Like ask "why" people chose their top-5 favourite games.
My top 5 are as follows...
1. Super Metroid - A true masterpiece of gaming. Not many other games can brag about glitches actually enhancing gameplay and prolonging replay value. There are very few games even now that allow for such deep levels of exploration and allow for the player to choose their own path to success... whether or not it includes things that the developers of the game put in to use or not.
2. StarCraft - No other RTS can claim that it singlehandedly balances three races perfectly so that even now, ten years later, players will still argue over which strategy is better. The story and characters in the game are also extremely memorable and the online customizability allowing for creation of entirely new game types adds literally infinite replay value.
3. Doom - The first FPS to truly bring the genre into the mainstream. It literally shut down schools and businesses when it came out. The game still survives to this very day, fourteen years later, and has a still very functional online community who are continually making new content for the game.
4. Super Mario Bros. 3 - No other 2D platformer can claim to be the best. Super Mario Bros. 3 combines everything from the previous iterations of 2D platformers into one amazing and extremely memorable game. Whether you play through every single world or skip from World 1 to World 8 with those handy Warp Whistles, the game still sticks to this very day as an extremely high quality gaming experience.
5. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - Ironically, one of my favourite RPG's contains Mario characters and lore. It is a very well made game that is both easy to pick up and extremely fun to play. There are not really many "complicated" things in the game like many other JRPG's, it is very accessible to newcomers and has a very unique take on the whole turn-based RPG structure.
Honourable mentions:
Shadow of the Colossus - This game is art, pure and simple. There is no other gaming experience like it. It truly needs to be witnessed to be appreciated. The game may not be one of the most "fun" games to play but it pretty much defines the word "epic."
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay - A game that does not hold back in terms of gritty atmosphere or quality gameplay, story and characters. Literally the best adaptation of a movie license in game form. Combines gameplay from genres like Stealth, RPG, FPS and Fighter all seamlessly together into one amazing action game that shames many games to this date. Truly a must play for anyone who likes the dark.
