This was an interesting decade in gaming. We were transitioning from the traditional console to consoles that were becoming more and more like PCs. Games were still growing in terms of tech, gameplay, and features. Top games that come to mind for me during this decade are:
- MGS 2: Sons of Liberty (2001): there was so much hype for this game back in the day. After all, it was a highly anticipated sequel to Kojima's master piece, Metal Gear Solid. Kojima did not disappoint. The gameplay, story and graphics made it a PS2 system seller. But Kojima did stir some fan controversy by switching out Solid Snake with Raiden. We still ended up with a great game and a prophetic game at that.
- Final Fantasy X (2001): another great showcase for the PS2. Graphics were an another level for a Final Fantasy game, and the gameplay and story were great too. What I loved about this iteration of Final Fantasy is that it didn't take big risks or deviations from the series, it just gave us a great Final Fantasy game in the modern era. The series was starting to get stale so this gave it a boost.
- Bayonetta (2008): loved this game for its style, fun combat, great music, fun characters and sense of humor. I love games that try to be unique in their own way and I thought Bayonetta pushed the action / hack n slash genre in that sense. It's also just a great hack n slash game. Too bad this franchise might be in limbo at this point.
- Uncharted 2 (2009): imo, this was the first "blockbuster" game. It felt like Naughty Dog wanted it to be like a movie, where you experience all these big action moments. But thankfully, it was also a fun game and one of the best action adventure games ever. The tech at the time was also impressive and I loved that it had both single player and multiplayer modes which Sony doesn't seem to do anymore (sad, really).
- LittleBigPlanet (2008): LBP was a very impressive game for its time. A platformer with an emphasis on level creation, but the tools had a lot of depth and there was a community aspect to it. It was also very charming and had great voice acting, music, and art style. This was a big win for Sony at the time, who needed a big platformer. The game ended up with 95 metacritic score!
How about you, SW? What are your top games from 2000-2009?
