I am not a fan of it, but it is what it is. I had my PS3 break in May because the disc drive broke. I bought it December 2007 and it broke less than a year and a half of owning it and now they wanted me to pay to get the damn thing fixed. I am just getting the PS3 Slim and getting a longer warranty to avoid any issues like that in the future.

I think repairs should be free if the system just stopped working from normal use, I mean if someone poured water on it, or crushed it with a rock yes you should have to pay for it to be repaired, but if you buy a system and it breaks in under 5 years, you shouldn't have to pay for repairs.

I was very dissapointed with the ps3's repair policy. They are also very anal about having the receipt and all that. Say what you want about MS, but my repair with them was painless. Sony, not so much.

I think both companies are handling the situation well when compared to the situation. Sony has its one year warranty..after that its a standard fee of $150 if your system failes. Its not that much of a deal since the system is pretty reliable.

The Wii also offers the same warranty. (in terms of period)

MS on the other hand "Have" to offer that free 3 year warranty since the RROD is so prominent. With numbers that high, you either offer the free service or end up facing a lawsuit you can't win. alternatively, you can always get extended warranties

i dont mind it, sure it sucks that your console breaks, but its like any other electronic manufacture. The 1 year warranty is the usual when it comes to electronics. Unless you pay more then you may be able to get a 3 year warranty (apple,hp,dell). Only reason M$ has a 3 year warranty is because they did not want to have a lawsuit on their hands.

I had my ps3 break about 3 months after i bought it. I had no problems with Sony they sent the box in about a day, a week later i had my ps3 back.

My xbox also red ringed once, then e74. It took microsoft two weeks to get it back to me (for the red ring). Not to mention i couldn't understand a word that the guy was saying.

150 or 175 what ever they charge after your 3 month warranty is up is terrible especially since its firmware updates that screw them up sometimes

i recomend everybody get the store warranty when you buy the ps3

If it's not under warranty it's like anything else. What else did you expect? The reason Microsoft is so generous with their repairs is because they have an unbelievably failure rate with the 360.

If the trade off is free repairs but an unreliable system, I will pay for the repairs.

I rang them up and they asked for all the recipt details then asked whether i had bought it between two months, nov - dec i think and they said they could offer a free replacement referb, it's a little louder but still works fine for now.

the ps2 actually lost a class action lawsuit where they had to fix/replace a majority of the models for free, and they still continue to charge ps2 owners for repairs. I've never really trusted sony any farther than I can throw em.

For that price I would just buy a slim for 100-120GBP more. The 1 year warranty is the standard although Sony replaced mine for free when it broke after a year, no complaints here.

Nope just picked a day where we exchanged PS3s by hand at my door, it had Battlefield Bad Company stuck in it (it was a blockbuster rental too) which they sent back (looked like a new disc) about 2 weeks later.

Only one of the 6 PS3's i've bought has broke (Only 4 are in use, 2 are waiting to be unwrapped at christmas) and SONY charged me to fix that.

Iwasn't happy, but ehh, i'll live with it. It was the 60GB model, and i'd rather have got it repaired then purchase a new £400 gimped PS3.

Unlike MS, SONY don't feel the need to fix it for free, as the PS3 isn't junk like the 360

Yeh i think they sent out a dodgy batch in those two months and tried to cover themselves, the dates they gave were very select it was like the 26th to the 22nd or something, anyhoo i think some places have 5 year warrantys now, probably expensive places though, game tend to do good warranty deals.

See the only thing is I payed $700 CAD for the console back then (a BD player was $1200 CAD so it was kinda worth it at the time), and now a PS3 is $300...Now I understand that the price has dropped and all and being an early adapter is usually going to end with some losses, but the fact Sony didn't do me any favours by charging $200 is what pisses me off.

Well, I can't really blame Sony. PS3's fail rate is really low. If it had hardware troubles like the 360 had, then repairs would probably be free

I was a bit worried at the time having spent £425 (probably around what you paid) on the console that i was going to be charged for repair but got lucky really. I do get bad feelings from time to time that it'll brake but this deal has given me time to save up some spare cash towards a slim.

Can't help but feel like this belongs more in the PS3 boards, but probably wouldn't get as much traffic like TC wanted. :P

It's nothing new, that's why people also get extended warranties with their console purchases.

If your PS3 break send it here rather than Sony. It's about half the price and they won't wipe your HDD
