TEH INNOVATION!

At the end of the "Creating Boom Blox" session at GDC, executive producer Lou Castle revealed that you can use two Wii remotes on your TV (and some form of do-it-yourself LED headset) to control the camera in Boom Blox with your head. Seriously.

Speaking briefly to Joystiq after the session, Castle explained that it was more of an easter egg inclusion and they weren't planning to actively promote the feature. We'll have more from the Boom Blox session later this week.Joystiq

Funny how there's more hype over Boom Blox than over Spielberg's other game, the one for the 360/PS3.

HAHAHA Wait till the causal market See's this, if so it could sell 2 million maybe by the end of it's lifespan. I know I'll still be buying it head tracking or not, come Microsoft and Sony you better come up with something to combat this or Nintendo could too far ahead that you can't reach them.

Name me one successful console with motion sensing to the extent of the Wii. You can go all the way back from the Atari 2600. It doesn't een have to be one that came out in the US. Just one that was successful in some country on Earth.

I was talking about head tracking, that's what this thread is about. And I don't consider simply taking old successful PC concept and moving it to consoles as "innovative". Otherwise sheep should claim Halo was wildly innovative game :)

Seen it, thanks.

I just mean that it's an optional feature that people don't have to use. I'm surprised EA let this slip past them, though. They could've made a killing by bundling in LED emitter headbands or glasses for an additional $10! :P

The PS3 can do head tracking with the PSeye, and the 360 just needs to release a camera accesory... I just hopoe that they use it soon before people get sucked in. Ill admit its cool, but no-one can deny that its a massive gimik.

Yes, it's been done before on PC but couple it with a Wii-mote and nunchuck and you got alot more potential, especially for FPS and games with melee weapons.

Ummm... incase you didn't know, the ps3 and the 360 are 100% capable of doing head tracking. There is even a video of the ps3 doing it (though a very slight mod was needed)

Here's some logic for you: "Capable" means nothing if it's not actually implemented, and "potential" means nothing if there is no drive to fulfill it.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not that excited for it, I just thought it was cool that they actually did implement this, because I thought it extremely unlikely when I first saw that homebrew demo a couple of months ago. :P

Still, one step forward is infinitely better than no step at all.

And you guys are forgetting it's an easter egg.

It won't be active standard.

You need two extra Wii-motes.

And you'll need a home made head-set with two infra red leds and a battery-pack.

Ass you can see the Wii also can't do it "out of the box".

The ps3/360 need the same glasses, a usb camera and a small infra-red filter to cover the lens. It's just as easy. And perhaps even cheaper.

It also only works for the wearer of the glasses, the others in the room get a distorted view.

As you can see this won't be something Nintendo'll start supporting. It contradicts their family gameplay pitch and demands that the players are kinda handy.

Casuals will never see or even hear about this until some third party developer makes a infra red headset. And they will only do this if enough games implement this feature.

You guys can start jumping around and party, but you're really over-estimating the impact of this easter egg feature.

The interesting thing here is that people are actually interested in these things. We saw a pretty big hype with 3d movies and glasses, but it was very shortlived.
This whole headtracking thing is okish (it still has a lot of disadvantages), but what i'm really hoping for is that this along with the motion sensing sends out a message that the doors are opened to introducing new ways of interactivity with software. Presentation has went from blocks and bleeps to surpassing reality in some areas in very few years.
I would really love to see this presentation being used in different ways that allow us to do more with it than just stare at it on a monitor screen and choose what to do at what time by pushing the right buttons.
Slowly we're finding ways to put our whole being into it. Personally i can't wait to see what they'll come up with.

That requires too many things for most people to even see (since its an easter egg) and it will probably go by unnoticed when its released.

They were gimmicks in the beginning.

It stopped being a gimmick when every arcade started having them.

Wearing something on your head to game has never surpassed the gimmick stage.

Why?

Because people don't want to be bothered. They want to pick up a controller and game, they don't want hard games or difficult controll schemes.

The Wii's succes is thanks to a lot of really simple games that are easy to pick up by casuals.

I find it extremely funny that people here seem to think most Wii's are sold because of the cutting edge tech.

Tech doesn't sell, accessability does.

The whole headtracking thing is neat, for sure, bu+ it's too much a hassle to break through to the main stream.

It's a gimmick and if I could bet my money on it, it'll stay a gimmick.

But yeah it won't become standard.

Can't wait for May then there is a lot of good games coming out for the Wii early this year
