While Nintendo announced they're releasing a new console (Wii U) next year, the consensus amongst the gaming public was the next Playstation and Xbox consoles were expected no earlier than 2013.

But, this week news surfaced that "Taiwan-based component makers," were reporting that production of the PS4 will commence later this year. The report also offers a broad release window for the new system, saying it will be released sometime in 2012. The report did not offer what the PS4 will be capable of in terms of a graphical power, but it did note that the system will boast "movement-based control like Kinect."

This news, on the heals of the rumor that Microsoft is also readying a successor to it's XBOX 360 which they will allegedly be showing at E3 2012, is heating up the debate on whether these rumors could be true, and if this timing is right?

SOOOOo, what are your thoughts on this. Do WE need new versions already. Do you think this is going to make us happy or are we all gonna be irritated by the need to procure NEW game collections or will they finally build a PS that you can play your older PS2 & PS3 games on?

There is a lot to speculate about new consoles. I believe I fear them making all the games I have obsolete and once again raising the prices of games from $60.00 to $70.00 US. For what we have been getting lately, that is not an option in my book, short & shoddy SP campaigns with emphasis on MP is NOT what I pay for in a game.

Share your thoughts.

Well i only bought the 360 slim earlier this year so im quite happy with my current console, i wouldnt be too suprised if the360's successor is announced at next years E3 and released the following year and by 2013 i'll probably be ready for a new console by then. In my opinion the 360 still has enough life in it until then, just look at the games released this year with Crysis 2 and its beautiful graphics and LA Noire with its ground breaking facial animation and dont forget kinect, although alot of gamers aint interested in it at the minute including myself, give developers another 6 months with it and im sure they'll do some fantastic things with it, you only have to look at this years E3 to see that, im gonna buy Kinect next year just so i can use it for the voice recognition on Mass Effect 3

I'm thinking the Kinect and Move were made to prolong the current consoles and keep up the hype. I can't believe it's been five years already into the current cycle, which is traditionally about the life of a console. Though I think with MS and Sony there was a load of emphasis on top tier tech in the consoles they can easily pull off another three or four years.

I feel we were burnt when they updated the xbox (too soon & untested). I'm really not looking forward to buying another console so soon, this one actually works.Don't understand why MS is always pushing new products when they can barely perfect the current ones??

I'm looking forward to the new consoles, if only because PC hardware is again miles ahead of the current gen. But as multi platform games are often first developed for the consoles. They seldom reach their full potential when they're ported or adjusted for the PC. And the current gen graphics are starting to look dated. As this generation had to many growing pains, I'm not going to be an early adopter anyway. It's probably best to wait a while.

I'd agree, I'll definitely wat a couple years for the next gen. I waited a few years for my 360 and PS3, the Wii was bought at launch and was my biggest regret of this gen. At least it was cheap to purchase.

I understand they need upgraded versions to keep pace with new technology and to give game designers a wider scope, but I can´t help feeling that sometimes they rush the new consoles out without the proper testing.  I've had an XBOX 360 for three years, and never had a problem with it.  Once the disc tray jammed, so I placed it horizontally instead of upright and works fine again.  My shiny new XBOX Slim is weird... sometimes the tray doesn´t open when you hear the "ping"; sometimes it just jumps out of a game of it´s own accord, and sometimes it takes aaaages to load up my profile.

Not convinced the new consoles are "made to last" like the older ones...Â
