Just finished watching a documentary on the wbc by Louis Theroux. The one on Youtube. How does the US mange to breed these people? They are absolute nutters! What do you guys think?

Even Jerry Falwell thought that the Phelpses were nuts.  They're basically just one huge family; they don't get adherents from the outside.

I saw it a couple days ago and I sort of felt physically ill watching them. I can't imagine people are actually like that. I think the worst part was when Louis asked the kids if they knew what they were picketing and what the signs meant and they didn't know at all what they were doing it for...

Actually, I would rather prefer that to the alternative of having them fully understand exactly what's going on and still be doing it. :P

Summer break just started for me and I've nothing to do today, so I'll probably get around to watching it tonight. I know it's simple to just search for it, but anyone wanna provide a link?

Also, I've heard that there's a good chance they're just a hate group that claims to be a church so that they can get away with being hateful more easily. Anyone able to confirm/disprove?

Ha, yeah. I guess it is better. It's just sad to see those kids brainwashed. After the kids didn't answer and Louis told the mother that they didn't understand the signs and such, the mother came over and tried to coax an answer out of them and they still couldn't answer.

Also, here is the link to the documentary:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSFrNOnvtls

If you watch the documentary the TC is talking about it's quite obvious that they are a church. They're more of a cult comprised almost entirely of a single inbred family than what you would think of as a church, but they definitely are religious.

Anyway, I saw the BBC documentary a couple days ago (I get the feeling everyone saying they watched it a couple days ago stumbled across it in the thread that was posted in OT :P) and I found myself laughing on many occasions. They're so over-the-top and deluded that I just couldn't help it.

Getting a bit off-topic, I kind of like Louis Theroux's style of documentary. A lot of documentarians who do social issues try to stay as neutral and "out of it" as possible when conducting their interviews. Louis, on the other hand, doesn't hold back at all. In his documentaries he flat out tells the people he's interviewing what he thinks about them and their views. What's amazing is that no one ever stops the interview when he calls them a bigot or deluded, they just keep on talking and letting Louis tag along with them for the next week. Sure, it makes the documentaries extremely biased, but then again most social documentaries are, it's just that Louis's shows don't try to hide it. Actually it may make them less biased since he lets his subjects know exactly how they're being portrayed and a chance to counter any portrayals that they think are unfair (unlike many documentaries where the people being interviewed have no idea if they're going to be portrayed negatively or positively). And hey, it's nice to see a host with balls for once (even if Louis always sounds nervous and awkward when he speaks).

Many times I think that maybe, MAYBE, the WBC is just an effort to show the stereotype of homophobia.

I think there's a term for that. When you take up the arguments of the opposition, bring to their extreme case just to show how stupid they are by making yourself an example by wearing the mask of your "enemy".

Yeah... just a thought.

But the only sure thing is that even if done with this in mind or not, WBC achieves one thing: it shows that homophobia is irrational.

Well, I think Poe's Law is kind of different in that parodies come under Poe's Law whereas outright attempts to decieve by lying about which side you're on and making really stupid comments aren't parodies.

Here are some Bible verses these people should really study up on.  1st John 3:15 "He who hates his brother is a murderer, and no murderer has eternal life in him."  The other one is Proverbs 6:17-19, which lists seven sins God especially detests: "haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers."  Take note that homosexuality, while a sin, is not on this list.  I guess it was a little too continent for them to leave out these verses.
