What do you say when people as you about god?
:| Take a chill pill.
A Jehovah's Witness came to my door once. I actually didn't know about Jehovah's Witnesses about the time, so I tried to be cordial and lessoned to him for about a half hour. He was very nice. Most people who are trying to sell God are actually nice, maybe not genuinely, but they're doing it to make their idea of God to look good.
I must say that you're lieing for atheism doesn't make atheism look good. Impregnating someone's sister? What type of joke is that? All because you're bored? That's despicable. I don't care what ideology you believe in: that's just wrong.
TC just out of curiosity how old are you? You seem to be the angry/rebellious type of atheist and your general demeanour and way of handling door knockers indicates to me that you're about 14-15. Am I right or wrong?
Anyways on topic now, I have had a couple of door knockers come over to my place and every time I've either taken their pamphlets and left it at that or had little discussions with them on the doorstep. To my experience the Jehovas Witnesses are a tad annoying but the Mormons are great.
I've only ever had one door knocker come to my door, and that was a pair of Mormons. I just told them that I already had a friendship with Jesus and that I had just moved in, so I didn't have a church yet, and that I would probably be busy so they shouldn't come check on me, but I'd definitely read their pamphlet and consider it.
Pretty much 2/3 truth, 1/3 lie, but I didn't want to hurt their feelings. :P
Heh, I lived in Palo Alto (at college now). We never got religious people knocking on our doors (to preach/try to convert/whatever), although we did get quite a few people from environmental protection groups, and, last year, from the Obama campaign :P.
The only time I really got mad at a canvasser was when this one kid from the Obama campaign came by asking for money. He kept trying to get me to give him money right then. I told him I was volunteering for the Obama campaign and had given over $200 already, and was planning to give more, but he just wouldn't stop asking... >_>
First off, have you ever talked with them properly? Or have you always been set against them? You could at least have listened to them once, out of politeness. And if you're sure of your beliefs, why not debate them? I find it immense fun debating with people (in real life) who have different beliefs to my own. It can be extremely productive, for both sides. Not only will you be getting a better grasping of their belief, you'll be improving your debate skills.
oh man i remember when people used to come about asking this question. I didnt now what to say the first time so i said that they might want to go away or il mail a pi$$ed on bible to them. after that they kept on coming.
Graeme95
Well obviously...... The more "damaged" you are, the more they will want to help you. ;)
after awhile I started to play with them.
like saying: im a sanatist, i got your sister pregnate, yes your mom kept on screaming that guys name last night. etc. etc .
Graeme95
Well that was productive.....and really mature of you.
when I got bored/ wasnt in the mood id have aspeech ready.
HI would you...
im a circumsized, muslum, who gives out blood condoms, sperm, and im the one who mailed you the peed on bible.
after about 10 of those i got alot less doorbell rings.
Graeme95
So you were just reinforcing the fact that a) you were a liar, and b) you needed help? Good work. That's really going to get them to go away.
I guess the point is what have you done to god lovers at your door?
Graeme95
Invite them in for a good old cup o' tea. ;)
PS. I do sometimes wonder why people are so against listening to what Christians have to say. It's as if they're completely closed off to the fact that they might actually speak the Truth - echoing a certain verse in 1 Corinthians.
Out here they are bad and ive had old teens throw stones and even once gave me a broken arm. i realisze that i may have given not only myself but now this union a dirty topic..hence i shall edit it...alot. im very sorry to you all. *walks the plank of shame*

Hey no worries mate. It sounds like you're in a very different culture than many of the people here.
Just today two people from a Christian organization in my university stopped by and had a chat with me. We had a nice discussion about Christ and the trinity etc and it was cool. You should try the same thing next time, talk with any evangelisers and explain exactly why you're an atheist and talk the issues over. You'll get lots out of it if they're prepared to be reasonable.

No worries Graeme, we weren't ready for a funny thread, you caught us off guard. Keep posting and have fun!

It is very annoying indeed when they come over, although it hasnt happened to me personally.
Now the point is that I hate the fact that they put their broad smiles on and you can tell they are just applying the policy of a good salesman. Impression. The whole campaign of information although doesnt necessarily have to be this way, imo has turned into a product sales campaign, with the product being the truth of each sect that might knock on our doors.
It is a pattern I have seen on many people here. You just feel intensely (I do at least) that they do not take up the task truly for the salvation of my soul but more to augment the feeling of serving the religion they follow. Thats where the word sect can be applied here with its negative meaning too. They seem to just try to indulge to their will to be "good" servants of their religion.
Thus I cant help, when I see such people evangelise to compare them with youth groups of political parties, which are rampant in Greek universities. They come and talk to you sneakingly smiling and being so kind with you and yet if you tell them that you wont be voting for their party or that "I dont support the party you represent" then they get really angry at you as if you are obligated to do as they wish. Proselytisation.
Now I know the two cases are not the same in terms of what each group represents as religion can not be compared to politics in this case, but I do hate it when religion applies political methods in its efforts.

Indeed. Could I be so bold as to ask which culture that is?
They might be coming a whole lot more often now:

"The fighting against nations, we're seeing more earthquakes, you can look at the swine flu, all this, and it just points to the things that shows we are getting very close to what we feel is the end," Ferris said. Going door-to-door with Bibles and informational packets has become a trademark for the Witnesses', and Ferris said there's a reason recruiting is such a major part of their religion. "While we don't relish the thought of destruction that's going to take place, that's why we feel so strongly about door-to-door work and warning people," Ferris said. "If you knew a hurricane was coming, and you were the only one and you didn't tell anybody, it would be on your shoulders."
They think the apocalypse is coming

I know at least 10+ atheists who think the world will end in 1012........
There has been genocide commited in the past on a mass scale; we've had the bubonic plague, and the eruption at Pompei, and they think that the world's going to end now because a bit of swine flu. :roll:They think the apocalypse is coming

Well Graeme said he was in some kind of extreme right-wing part of Cananda.
For me I live in Christchurch New Zealand and we're quite secular over here but first and foremost we're chilled out about everything. New Zealand has this great kind of "no worries" attitude about most things and that includes religion.

NO KIDDING. These guys are beyond annoying. Always rambling on and on about why the other parties are useless and why theirs is the way to go. Don't get me started. :x
I've never had the experience of having someone come to my doorstep, trying to evangelise.... Maybe years ago, but then I was too young to debate. :P I'd actually like them to come sometime, my debating skills have improved greatly since I joined the Genesis and Atheism Unions. Thanx you guys. :D Anyway, it seems to me that in Greece, people are also "chill", if not about everything, at least in the Religion department. (That, or they're secretly atheists. {Kafroi ki a8eoi, if you get me Teenaged}:P) There are some guys my age giving out pamphlets at the Uni., but that's pretty much all they do... :? Aw, btw, I loved Lans's post with the empty pamphlet. :P
[QUOTE="BiancaDK"]I propose a paradox and let them be, as they do me.
domatron23
What paradox would that be?
If they have a dimwitted expression riddled on their face as i open the door: "If everything i say is a lie..." routine. I connect that to how God can be all-knowing and presto! They´re facemelted.
If the missionary looks like the architect:"God gives you a piano. For each note you play, someone will die. What classical piece do you choose?"
There you go, i´m back attending my affairs on gamespot, wiki and deezer before you know of it.
NO KIDDING. These guys are beyond annoying. Always rambling on and on about why the other parties are useless and why theirs is the way to go. Don't get me started. :x Indecipherable
Yeah the hypocricy is hilarious. One pamphlet I was given by KKE had an image of Dracumel from the Smurfs next to the paragraph about PASOK or ND. Propaganda ftw. And a hilarious one at that!

Aw, btw, I loved Lans's post with the empty pamphlet. :PIndecipherableI bet most Greeks are atheists even if they dont know that a term for that exists or even that atheism exists. Religion has been reduced to some ceremonial tradition and the rest is up to question really. :P

Couldn't they just answer 4'33"? :P

This is why i refrain from dwelling on the avantgarde arts. =|

Two questions: 1. Does it count as classical music if it is less than 100 years old? 2. What. The. **** ?[QUOTE="GabuEx"][QUOTE="BiancaDK"]If the missionary looks like the architect:"God gives you a piano. For each note you play, someone will die. What classical piece do you choose?"

Two questions: 1. Does it count as ****cal music if it is less than 100 years old? 2. What. The. **** ?Yes, it's cIassical music with a small c; whereas CIassical music - with a capital C - is music composed roughly between 1750 and 1820.
