Well.... I notice in the cosplay thread thx to CyberDragon and Gregg that there are two version of the background of Soma. I tried to look for info to post both version, but I came with just one and I found it in a link of wikipedia
(which is not the most trustfull site)

So... Post here whatever you can find on Soma background. The two version are:

1. Transfering student from EU studying at JP (the one that I knew)

2. A high school Japanese student.

Please post anything to back up your version..

What I know, and was able to find was:

At the US AoS`s manual it reads:

"...My name is Soma Cruz and I am a high school exchange student studying abroad in JP. I live nead the Hakuba Shrine, an...."

And in Mr P`s Realm reads that the only different between the JP/EU versions are:

"All versions of Aria of Sorrow are identical to each other in mechanics, in palette, in play control, and in extras. The only difference, as usual, is the deviations in the names. In this case, J, whose full name is revealed to be Julius Belmont, is named in the usual Japanese ****-that is, his name is instead Julius Belmondo. Unintentionally, Lubicant should be called "Rubicant" (as in Final Fantasy), which shows that some name-changes are more a product of mistranslation. Surprisingly, in that sense, many of the enemy characters use their true Japanese names rather than the adopted names used in the American version of Symphony of the Night and its ilk. For instance: Thornweeds are actually called "Unes" and Lossoths are now "Biphrons.""

I could not find anything that said he was japanese... Thus, again I was not able to find/read the JP manual...

im almost posotive that soma was said to be from outside japan (i think he was from america or europe somewhere) and he was a transfer student. like i said im not 100% posotive of this, but i think it mentions where hes from in the into scene in aos when he is walkin up the steps to the shrine. im tryin to find the game now so i can check it to be sure

Wow... wasn't expecting this... oO;;

If you want to find the whole "native japanese" thing I mentioned in passing, you'll need the actual JP version of the game, or a JP manual translation. Soma was changed into a transfer student for ALL other localizations of AoS. :/

I disagree. I think Belmondo sounds super-cool if you say it with a Spaniard's accent. Or a Mexican accent.

People...hasn't any of you played Dawn of Sorrow? in the intro or i think in the manual it clearly states that Soma is from somewhere in Europe, it doesn't say where but it says that he invited Mina Hakuba to his home town in Europe. There now you all nown where he's from, not the country but at least we know he isn't either Japanese nor American, but from some place in Europe

As Fredy said, he is from Europe, I i have my copy of DoS and it says it right in there. Plus doesn't Belmont sound like something from NA or any other continents, other than Europe. Of course I personally think it is a bit dumb to find such a little detail in Soma's background, but I do realize trying to get your facts straight though...

Fredy1689: We know that in the USA and EU version it says he is from Europe (a transfer student in JP from EU). But it was recentely brough to our attention that in the JP manual he appear as a japanese student, no as a Tranfer student in JP. So we are trying to find facts of this. (why i made a reference to teh japanese manual)

@Shattered: Soma last name is not "belmont" is "cruz", which either way sound european (spain; or hispanic :P ). Yea is dumb/silly but sometimes I am (we are) beyond being just fans and I am (we are) CV freaks (memories of Big_Boss a old member of CUU come mind)... I love knowing the backgrounds, story, trivia stuff about CV :P

BTW: Gregg:   Maybe if your 1st language is not spanish..so would say it in english with a cool spanish accent, bc believe in spanish sound bad  :P

That's what I meant, Chang. "Belmondo" pronounced with a Spanish accent. Sorta rolls off the tongue.
